TOEFL stands for Test Of English as a Foreign Language. It is a standardized test which is conducted to measure the English language ability to get enrolled in English-speaking universities around the world. TOEFL score is accredited by numerous English speaking institutes. Applications are invited for the TOEFL Registration.  Candidates have to apply for the TOEFL Test in online mode through the official website of ETS.

TOEFL is conducted by Educational Testing Services (ETS). ETS TOEFL Program provides tools and guides to help candidates to prepare themselves for the tests and improve the English-language skills.

TOEFL exam opens doors  to 9000+ institutions in around 130 countries. TOEFL exam is considered as one of the most opportune tests students can take, giving the latter much flexibility because more available and accessible to test takers worldwide. It is a single day exam and thus it saves the travel expenses and other expenses too. TOEFL exam is conducted around more than 4000 test centers. TOEFL test can also be taken through the internet and even TOEFL test can be easily retaken in 12 days of the existing appointment.

Versions of the TOEFL

Nowadays, TOEFL is conducted in two modes. Candidates can either choice the paper-based test (PBT) or can appear for TOEFL iBT online test. But iBT is not available at every test center. TOEFL also conducts an entrance exam for younger students and it is popularly known as TOEFL Junior.

The total exam duration of TOEFL iBT is about 4 hours. TOEFL test has 4 sections- Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. These sections check the strength of the non-native English speaking candidates to get admitted into the English-Speaking Universities.

Why is TOEFL Taken?

Who Accepts TOEFL Score?

How to check institute that accepts TOEFL scores?

This has been the hurdle to get the institutes that accept the TOEFL score. Here below is a set of instructions that explains how to check the institute which accepts the TOEFL score. It can be searched either by entering the name of the institute or by entering the location of the institute.

  1. Visit the official website of TOEFL.
  2. At the right-hand side of the top most of the official website, there you will see a link of“Search by TOEFL® Score” under the Destination SearchClick on it.
  3. In the quick search option, you will search by options- Institute Name & Location.
  4. Select your preference of choice and press enter.

There is another option for searching the institute by entering the scores and the location. This feature is given under the above-mentioned search option. Given below are the instructions to get the information:

  1. There are 6 columns given in the search area. Candidates have to enter the details in all the mandatory columns.
  2. Firstly, candidates have to  fill the scores of either  TOEFL iBT online Test or TOEFL PBT.
  3. After this, candidates are required to enter the detail of “Level of Study” and this is to be chosen from the drop-down list.
  4. In the same way, the candidate has to choose the country in which he wants to get admitted for his further studies.
  5. Enter the State/Region and the Cityfrom the drop-down list provided in the column.
  6. At last, go for the “Search” to check the information.

TOEFL  Dates

TOEFL is conducted around 50 times a year across the world. TOEFL test has more dates than any other such kind of test. TOEFL can be retaken multiple times in a year but it cannot be taken more than once in a time period of 12 days. Even one cannot register for the next TOEFL test while already having an appointment of the test.

However, there is a retake policy that will be enforced if a violation is not immediately identified. Such as, if, any inconsistent registration information is found after registration and before the test date, the test appointment will be cancelled. The paid fee will not be refunded.

Here below are the steps that suggest how to select the exam dates and test location:

  1. Visit the official website of ETS.
  2. Select the TOEFL and then go for the TOEFL iBT application.
  3. Click on “Register for the Test”.
  4. Now, select the “Test Centers and Dates”.
  5. There, you will see link reading- “see a list of testing cities, dates and fees”, click on it.

Before getting the dates, candidates have to select the country/location. After entering the details, candidates can see the test dates along with the test location, fees and testing format. Candidates can even go through disability accommodations information or other ways to register for more information.

TOEFL Exam Fee and Mode of Payment

The following table represents the TOEFL test fees. Candidates should note that, the registration fee for TOEFL test varies by country. To get registered for the TOEFL test, candidates should have a credit/debit card, PayPal account or an e-check account.

NOTE: Candidates should note that, the above mentioned fees can be changed without notice. The TOEFL test fees that are mentioned above are exclusive of VAT and other similar taxes.

Payment Policies

TOEFL has some policies regarding its payment services. Before making payment, kindly follow the following policies:

  1. Payments made by check or money order must be made in full. 
  2. Check must be dated within 90 days of the date of receipt.
  3. Money orders must be in US $ only, drawn on a bank in US. It should be made payable to ETS-TOEFL.
  4. All the payments should be made in full before registering for any other ETS service.
  5. Payment should not be made by cash or demand draft.

Note: If candidate fails to submit the correct amount of TOEFL Test then his TOEFL Registration  will be rejected. TOEFL scores will not be released if the payment cannot be processed for any reason.

Modes of Payment

TOEFL accepts payment from the following modes of payment:

  1. Credit/ Debit Card: payments are accepted by American Express, Discover, JCB, VISA and MasterCard. But American Express, e-checks, JCB, Discover and MasterCard are not excepted in the following countries: Togo, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Benin. At these locations, only VISA card payments are accepted.

If the payment by credit/ debit card is chosen then the payment option will be available only in local currencies rather than US dollars. The selected payment method can be changed before clicking “Submit” to process the payment. The system will show the related information.

  1. Electronic Check: this mode of payment is only applicable in US and its territories. It should be drawn only in USD.
  2. PayPal Account: TOEFL accepts payment through PayPal.
  3. Paper Check: there are 3 kinds of checks accepted. The following are the checks that are accepted-
  • Personal Paper Checks/ Money orders (Only USD, Payable to ETS-TOEFL)
  • Euro Checks are valid only in European countries where Euro is the standard currency.
  • Checks in Canadian Dollars drawn on a bank in Canada only.
  1. Western Union Quick Pay: This payment method is applicable only for the candidates who registered themselves through mail. After completing the form, use the following under "Pay To:"
  • Company Name: Educational Testing Service;
  • City Code: TOEFLPROGRAMNJ;
  • Country: U.S.A.
  • It has to be sent with the original receipt marked "Agency’s Copy" with the form. Copies, facsimiles or receipts marked "Customer’s Copy" will not be accepted.

The following modes of payment are not accepted:

  1. Cash or Demand Draft
  2. Post-dated Checks
  3. Receipts for bank checks
  4. UNESCO Coupons

Instructions to the candidates while making payment through e-check

Candidates must check the details before making the e-check payment. Kindly check the bank account number, ABA/ bank routing and transit number before submitting the e-check. After submitting the e-check, the bank account may be debited the same day. Cancelled check will not be sent to the candidates.            

Instructions to the candidates while making payment through Paper Check

While making payment by Paper Check, candidates are requested to check the following information which should be printed on the check- the bank’s name, bank’s address, verify the money order number, payee’s name and payee’s address, and signature. It should be noted that, typewritten payee’s name and address in place of signature, may result in rejection of the paper check payment.

Verify the details before making the final payment such as the details as- dates and currency. As, post-dated checks may result in rejection of the form. Even the checks should not be more than 90 days old when it is received by ETS. Euro checks must be drawn on a bank in the same country as the person writing the check.

Refunds

TOEFL test takers in Korea have special policy for refunding of the payment made for the test. Candidates from Korea can receive full refund after 7 days of registration for a full refund. The given below table represents the refunding of payment conditions:

NOTE: if  TOEFL Registration  has been made after the deadline with the late fee payment then the fee will be refunded. But refunds will not be made if the proper registration or the required identification wasn’t presented at the TOEFL test center.

TO receive the refund of the fee, candidates need to cancel their registration before the deadline and it should be at least 4 days before the TOEFL test date. Refunds in USD for half of the full test fee paid. The balance is deducted as a retained amount to cover up the expenses that were made for registration and holding the seat at the test center.

Cash refunds aren’t available. Refunds will not be made if the proper registration or the required identification wasn’t presented at the TOEFL test center. It takes 8 weeks for processing the checks drawn on a domestic bank of US. At least 12 weeks are required for processing the refund, if payment was made in non-US funds drawn on a bank outside the US. For another services, refunds are not available.

TOEFL Registration

TOEFL registration opens 3-4 months before the TOEFL date. Candidates can register for TOEFL iBT on the official website of ETS. As the TOEFL test centers can fill up quickly so it is good to have early registration to get the preferred test center and test date. Before moving on to the TOEFL registration candidates should note the following instructions:

  • Candidates registering for TOEFL must hold a credit/ debit card, or an e-check, or a PayPal account in order to pay the TOEFL Registration Fees.
  • Avoid using browser’s Back Buttons.
  • Do not double click especially while doing payment.
  • Regular registration closes 7 days prior to the test date. If a candidate is unable to complete his registration on time then he may proceed with late fees for completing his registration. US$ 40 will be charged as late fees.
  • Candidates can also register for TOEFL by phone or by mail. For registering by phone, candidate should hold a credit/debit card or an e-check. While for registering by mail, candidates must hold debit/credit card/ money order/ personal check/ Western Union Quick Pay service for the payment of fees.

Given below are the steps for registration for TOEFL:

Step 1: Login

Candidates who are appearing for the first time, have to sign up to create the profile for registration with a user name and password. Returning users can proceed with Step 3.

Step 2: Create a Profile

Step 2 consists of 5 parts. Part 1 consists the filling up the contact information. All the column marked with * are mandatory. All the information provided by the candidate will be kept confidential. Verify the spellings of the credentials that are entered, it should be the same as on the identification documents.

Part 2 carries the fields of identifying information. This includes information such as passport information, international ID Information and International Driver’s License Information of international residents and etc.

Part 3 section consist only 3 fields that are required to create user name and password by following the rules.

Part 4 is setting 3 challenging questions. These questions are set for security reasons. Candidates should set those questions which are easy to remember to them, not to others. This is step is useful, when a candidate forgets his password or username, he can access it by answering challenging questions.

Part 5 is confirming the profile. A confirmation page will be displayed after submitting all the details. Before confirming, candidates are advised to verify all the details.

Step 3: Log in with User name and Password

In case, a candidate forgets his user name/ password then he can go for username assistance/ password assistance or else may proceed.

Step 4: Accessing Homepage

Here, candidates can access their profile, check for the orders, reporting time of the TOEFL test center and update information in the profile and lots more.

Step 5: Register for Test

At this step, candidate has to select “Register for a test/order score reports” under “My Tests”

Step 6

nder the Select Product Type, click “TOEFL Test” and then enter with “Continue”. If a candidate wishes for more score reports then he can proceed with “TOEFL Services”.

Step 7: The confirmation

Before moving towards the further step, candidate should verify all the stuffs carefully.  To continue, click “I Agree” at the bottom.

Step 8: Select a Test Center Location

Candidates should select the test center as per their own convenience by thinking about the factors such as travelling time, knowledge about the center and selecting multiple cities which is nearer to his city.

Step 9: Select Test Dates

Select the preferred TOEFL test date and center by selecting a date range in the start and end columns. After confirming the test dates, move forward by clicking “Search” button.

Step 10: Select Test Center

A candidate has to select the desired exam center by clicking on “Select a Test Center Link.”  A candidate can also select his or her preferred date of examination.

A candidate will be given 20 minutes to complete from step 11 to step 17.

Step 11: Confirmation

After that, confirm your registration by clicking on “Continue” button. In case you want to edit the information in the confirmation page, click on “Cancel” button.

Step 12: Select Score Recipent

A candidate has to select his or her score recipients. A candidate can select up to 4 institutions to receive score reports without paying anything before 10 p.m. (local test center time) the day before the entrance test. Click on “add another recipient” or “continue” with the application process

Step 13: Receiving of Scores

A candidate has to choose how he or she wants to receive his or her scores. A candidate can ask for soft copy of TOEFL Score Card or Soft and hard copy of TOEFL Score Card. Then click “Continue.”

Step 14: TOEFL Questionnaire

In this step, the candidate has to answer some random questions that are asked only for research purposes. It is just to make the process of TOEFL examination better and simpler for the candidates.

Step 15: Verify the Details

Check all the details on the registration information and click on “Confirm Order” button. In case you want to edit any information, click on “Modify” link. To cancel the registration, click on “Cancel” button.

Step 16: Payment

A candidate can pay the registration fee of the exam using Credit Card, Electronic Check or Voucher. Select the payment option and click the “Continue” button

Step 17: Mode of Payment

In case you are paying via Credit Card, the you have to enter details such as Name of the Card Holder, Card Number, CVV and Date of Expiry of card.

If you have purchased any voucher, then you just have to enter the Voucher number to pay the fee. In case you are paying through Electronic Check, then you have to enter Account number, Account type and Transit Number.

Step 18: Payment Confirmation

After the successful payment of fee, a screen containing the Registration Confirmation and Order receipt will appear. Candidates can also get links to free TOEFL iBT Sampler from this page. It is important for an applicant to take out a print out of the Order receipt and Registration Confirmation Slip. A candidate has to carry these slips to the exam center at the time of examination. Cancel or Change Your TOEFL iBT Application

If a candidate wishes to cancel or reschedule his TOEFL test then it can be done 4 days before the test day. However, there is special refund policy for the Korean test takers. An extra amount of US$ 60 is charged for rescheduling the TOEFL test and it should be paid before registering for the new TOEFL date. Candidates can reschedule or cancel the TOEFL test by following any one of the methods below:

  • Online: TOEFL aspirants can reschedule or cancel their TOEFL test by logging onto the TOEFL account. After logging in, candidates have to go for “View Orders” on the home page. Post visiting the view orders, click on “Modify” or “Cancel” as per the need.
  • By Phone: firstly, candidates have to visit the official website of ETS. Search for TOEFL and click on it, and then “Contact Us”. Candidates have to choose a location from where he is applying, and then submit. There, contact information of the particular country will appear and candidates can contact as per their need.

Before contacting the personnel, candidates should be ready with the registration number, address, email id, phone number, and TOEFL test date. In US, US territories and Canada, candidates can call at: 1-443-751-4862 or 1-800-468-6335.
