SSC CGL 2017 Exam Pattern

SSC CGL Exam Pattern is defined by Staff Selection Commission (SSC). The pattern is similar to that of SSC CGL 2016. The exam is conducted in 4 phases namely Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4. This article will help candidates understand various important elements related to the exam pattern of SSC CGL viz. nature of questions, marking scheme, section-wise marks distribution, a total number of questions, etc. 

For this year, the official dates for SSC CGL have been released online at ssc.nic.in. SSC CGL Tier 1 is scheduled for August 1 – 20, 2017. Official dates for joining letters and other formalities will be released shortly by SSC.

Listed below are some quick facts about SSC CGL Exam Pattern:

  • SSC CGL Tier 1 and Tier 2 will be held in online mode.
  • SSC CGL Tier 3 is a descriptive type examination.
  • Tier 4 is conducted for candidates who have applied for the post of Assistant Section Officer.
  • The questions in both the papers will be objective in nature i.e. MCQs. 
  • There is a provision of negative marking in SSC CGL as well. For every correct answer, candidates will be awarded 2 marks while for every wrong answer ½ mark will be deducted.
  • For SSC CGL Tier 1 exam, a total of 100 questions will be asked. The questions are divided into 4 sections namely General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language.
  • SSC CGL Tier 2 examination comprises 4 papers- Quantitative Aptitude (Paper 1), English Language and Comprehension (Paper 2), Statistics (Paper 3) and General Studies (Paper 4).
  • Paper 1&2 is compulsory for all the posts.
  • SSC CGL Paper 3 is compulsory only for the post of “Statistical Investigator Gr. II” & “Compiler”.
  • Paper 4 is only for the post of “Assistant Audit Officer”.
  • Each paper in SSC CGL Tier 2 consists of 200 questions. The time duration to complete each paper is 2 hours.
  • For every wrong answer in Paper 1, 0.50 marks will be deducted and 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer in Paper 2, Paper 3 and Paper 4.

SSC CGL Exam Pattern for Tier 1

SSC CGL Tier 1 is the first stage for the recruitment of various posts in central government. Tier 1 is scheduled from August 1 – 20, 2017 in online mode. The test consists of General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension.

Quick facts about SSC CGL Tier 1 exam is listed below:

  • It is considered as the qualifying examination.
  • Time duration to complete the examination is 60 minutes. Candidates suffering from Cerebral Palsy and Visually Handicapped will be allotted a compensatory time of 20 minutes.
  • Candidates clearing this paper will then be eligible to appear for SSC CGL Tier 2.
  • The marks secured in this Phase will not be considered or counted for the purpose of final selection.

SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam Pattern 2017 Highlights

  • Mode of Examination: SSC CGL Tier 1 will be conducted in online mode. Candidates appearing for SSC CGL will be allotted a desktop, here they will be first shown all the instructions and guidelines that need to be followed by them. Post that, questions will appear and needs to be answered one by one.
  • Number of Sections: There are 4 sections in SSC CGL Tier 1.
  • Duration of Exam: The exam will be of 1 hour (60 minutes)
  • Nature of Questions: Questions that will be asked in the exam will be of objective type. Each question will have 4 options wherein only 1 option will be correct.
  • Number of Questions: In SSC CGL Tier 1, there will be a total of 100 questions. These questions are further divided into 4 sections i.e. General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension, will have 25 questions each. 
  • Marking Scheme: SSC has defined a proper marking scheme for its exam. For this paper, each question will carry 2 marks. Also, there is a provision of negative marking as well i.e. for every wrong answer, ½ mark would be deducted.
  • For English section, candidates have to answer in English Language only, whereas, for Quants and Reasoning Section, English and Hindi language can be used.
  • No time limit is allotted in SSC CGL Tier 1 exam sections.

SSC CGL Exam Pattern for Tier 2

SSC CGL tier 2 schedule will be released shortly by SSC. As some modifications were made in SSC CGL 2016, the same changes are there for the current year as well.

Listed below are some quick facts about SSC CGL Tier 2:

  • SSC CGL Tier 2 examination is an objective type paper and also conducted through online mode only.
  • Tier 2 examination is comprised of 4 papers- Quantitative Aptitude (Paper 1), English Language and Comprehension (Paper 2), Statistics (Paper 3) and General Studies (Paper 4).
  • Paper 1&2 is compulsory for all the posts.
  • SSC CGL Paper 3 is compulsory only for the post of “Statistical Investigator Gr. II” & “Compiler”.
  • SSC CGL Paper 4 is only for the post of “Assistant Audit Officer”.
  • The time duration to complete each paper is 2 hours and each paper carries 200 marks.
  • For every wrong answer in SSC CGL Paper 1, 0.50 marks will be deducted.
  • 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong marked answer in Paper 2.
  • SSC CGL Paper 1 is based on the 10th class syllabus
  • SSC CGL Paper 2 is based on the 12th class syllabus.
  • SSC CGL Paper 3 & 4 is conducted to test the aptitude of graduation level education.
  • 40 minutes of compensatory time is provided to candidates suffering from VH & Cerebral Palsy.

SSC CGL Tier 3 Paper Pattern

The Tier 3 examination is a descriptive type examination and will be conducted through offline mode only. Candidates should write Essay or Precis or Letter or Application Writing etc. The time duration to complete the examination is 60 minutes which carries a total of 100 marks but time duration for visually handicapped (VH) and for candidates suffering from cerebral palsy has extended to 80 minutes.

Candidates who clear Tier 2 examination will be eligible for Tier 3 examination. To appear for tier 4 examination candidates need to secure 33% marks in SSC CGL examination.

SSC CGL Tier 4 Paper Pattern

Tier 4 is a last and final stage examination. It is also known as Data Entry Skill Test or Computer Proficiency Test. The candidates who have applied for the post of Assistant Section Officer need to appear for CPT.

The DEST examination requires pressing 2000 keys in an hour. Candidates belong to Orthopedically Handicapped are exempted from the examination but Visually Handicapped and Hearing Handicapped candidates are not exempted from DEST.


Changes Introduced

Candidates need to take care of the following changes:

  • A new post Assistant Audit Officer is included with approval of the government.
  • A paper IV (General Studies - Finance & Economics) is also included in Tier II.

The age limit of the candidates also change the previous age limit is between 18 to 27 years but for 2017 examination the age limit will be 20 to 30 years.
