NMAT Exam Pattern 2018- Marking Scheme, Total Marks

NMAT 2018 Exam Pattern- GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) has released the official exam pattern of NMAT 2018 at its official website. NMAT is a popular management exam, held for admission to MBA/ PGDM courses in top B-schools in India. 

NMAT 2018 is scheduled between October- December in multiple windows. However, NMAT Exam Pattern remains same for all slots, as given below:

  • Mode of exam- NMAT by GMAC is held in online mode.
  • Duration of exam- Maximum time allowed to attempt the question paper is 2 hours.
  • Nature of questions- The exam has only multiple-choice questions.
  • Sections- NMAT Question Paper has 3 sections- Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Skills.
  • Total Questions- 120 questions are asked in the paper.
  • NMAT Total Marks- Maximum marks obtained by a candidate are 360. 
  • Language of Paper- The paper is set in English language.

NMAT Exam Pattern 2018- Key Points

  • Candidates can choose the order of sections for attempting the exam.
  • If a candidate has completed all the questions of a given section before the allotted time, then he can move to the next section. However, the time left will not be transferred to the next section. 
  • Marks are calculated for each section separately. Total marks include overall marks obtained by the candidate in NMAT by GMAC. 

NMAT 2018 Section-wise Exam Pattern 

NMAT by GMAC is segregated into 3 sections- Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Skills. Each section has to be solved within a stipulated period of time. Examinees can proceed to the next section if they finish a section beforehand but the remaining time cannot be used for other sections.

The maximum marks a candidate can score in NMAT are 360. Aspirants must choose the most appropriate answer out of 5 alternative options. The section-wise NMAT Paper Pattern is given below:

NMAT Exam Pattern for Language Skills

This section has questions from English language and grammar. It tests a candidate’s language and comprehension skills. The comprehension questions test the ability to comprehend the meaning from a given passage. Questions about the language usage and their rules are also expected to appear in the exam. testing the understanding of basic grammar is also part of the exam. The main topics of this section are:

NMAT Exam Pattern for Quantitative Skills

This section assesses the basic mathematical ability of students. It is considered to be relatively a scoring section and the time limit is 60 minutes. The difficulty level for this section is 10+2 level. Speed, accuracy, and precision are the key players here.

NMAT Exam Pattern for Logical Skills 

The logical skills section is designed to evaluate the understanding of patterns from the data given and to test the visualization power of aspirants. It questions a candidate’s logical thinking and its application to everyday problems.

NMAT Marking Scheme 2018

Applicants must know the marking scheme in order to decide how to attempt the questions in the entrance exam. There has been no change in the marking scheme of NMAT by GMAC and it is the same as it was for the year 2017. The marking scheme is stated as follows:

  • 1 mark is awarded to candidates for marking every accurate answer.
  • There is no penalty of marks charged for marking incorrect or wrong answers i.e. negative marking is not applicable.
  • No mark is deducted from the total score of the student for leaving a question blank or failure in attempting it.
  • Marking of two options is not possible as candidates have to choose only 1 option that seems the most appropriate and clicking on another option will mark it as the answer.

Qualifying Marks

Qualifying marks for NMAT by GMAC are decided by the organizing body as well the college. Candidates should note that they must qualify both, section-wise and total cut-off marks to be eligible for admission to various management programs. Those applicants who do not score the minimum stipulated marks will not qualify and hence will not be short-listed for the Case Discussion and Personal Interview rounds.
