SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier 3

SSC CGL Tier 3 is a descriptive test of one hour duration. Tier III was introduced last year by SSC to evaluate candidates’ writing skills and their ability to draft quick communication. SSC CGL Tier 3 is tentatively scheduled for January 21, 2017. The exam will be conducted in offline mode and it will comprise essay writing/ passage of about 250 words and a letter or application writing of about 150 words.

Candidates need to attempt the paper within the duration of an hour. The tier 3 exam is bilingual and can be written either in Hindi or English. Tier 3 exam has been introduced replace the personal interview conducted earlier for various posts. Therefore, the exam is of qualifying nature but the final score of all three tiers will be considered for final shortlisting of candidates.

SSC CGL Tier III Marking Scheme

Since, this paper primarily aims to assess the writing skills of candidates, the distribution of marks. Candidates are advised to never exceed the word limit as that may lead to disqualification. The marks obtained in SS CGL Tier III will be finally reflected in the final merit list along with marks of Tier I & II.

  • Marks allocated for the exam is 100.
  • Essay is likely to carry 50-60 marks.
  • If there is both Letter/Application writing as well Précis Writing then they may each carry 20-30 marks each.
  • If just one of these two are asked in the paper, expect the Letter/Application to be worth 40 marks.

The evaluation will be done based on the following points

  1. Clarity of Expression
  2. Command over language
  3. Continuity, Context/Understanding
  4. Content
  5. If talking about a mission, for example SBM(Swachh Bharat Mission) - When launched, by whom and with what objectives/goals, nodal ministries of SBM
  6. Mission objectives - for example Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM): Rural and SBM: URBAN
  7.  Mention Components - for example - (i)  SBM: GRAMIN (ii) SBM: URBAN
  8. Comments on strength and weaknesses
  9. Suggestions

Word limit is 250 words in SSC CGL TIER III exam and if your word limit exceeds 275 words, there are chances that your paper will not be evaluated.


SSC CGL Tier III Syllabus

The exam tests the candidate's ability to form coherent sentences and communicate on paper in an efficient and clear manner. There is no specific syllabus but the questions will most likely include precis writing, essay writing, application writing and a comprehensive passage. Keep these points in mind while writing the essay and application.

  • Clarity of expression- Write the the definition of topic which is asked in your exam.
  • Command over language - Your essay must be free of grammatical errors and use comma and full stops on appropriate positions.
  • Continuity and Understanding- All the sentences should be interlinked and connected to the topic asked.
  • Content: Work on reading newspaper daily and retaining as much information as you can for various schemes and yojanas started by the government. The content should be relevant and precise.
  • Suggestions: You can suggest about better implementation of yojana/schemes or discuss about any other yojanas which can help in development of our country. It completely depends on your thoughts and how you pen them

Guidelines for SSC CGL Tier III

Some general instructions that would help you avoid mistakes that candidates usually make in a long paper.

  • Your essay should give all relevant information to a reader on the topic of essay, that essay can be considered. You must write down the important points on the side or back of the sheet before starting with the essay.
  • Make sure that the essay/application is structured well in terms of layout as well as organization of content. Proper structure and correct formats are necessary in official correspondence.
  • Start evaluating yourself on daily basis and read newspaper for enhancing your knowledge on trending topics. Try to practice at least two topics daily. You can discuss afterwards with your friends or a counsellor for better evaluation
  • Avoid writing generic/abstract lines; your essay should be informative and well-structured sine you have draft official communications during your tenure.
