SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level) is a graduate level national competitive exam for recruitment in different Group ‘B’ and Group ‘C’ posts across various ministries. SSC CGL 2017 Official notification was released on May 16, 2017. This year, there are almost 20,000 vacancies through SSC CGL 2017. The post of SI (Sub Inspector) is among the most sought-after posts through SSC CGL.
The post of an SI is a Group B post in CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) which works under the supervision of Ministry of Personnel, Pension and Grievance, Government of India. CBI is an efficient organization with a very talented bunch of young and experienced workforce. It is one of the best places to start your career and a great place for freshers to hone their skills in the government sector.
The job profile of an SI carries a certain amount of power and aura, dignified social status, job satisfaction, etc. All these perks and packages make this profile very popular among SSC CGL aspirants.
There will be 4 tiers in SSC CGL 2017. Tier I and Tier II are objective type online entrance exam. Tier III is descriptive pen and paper based exam while Tier IV comprises CPT (Computer Proficiency Test)/DEST (Data Entry Skill Test) for specific posts in CGL. The job of a Sub-Inspector in CBI is a non-uniform group B post under the central government. The main function of SI (posted in Branches/Units) is to make enquiries and to gather information. They also look after the cases in court during trial or during the disciplinary trial or during proceedings which are initiated on the recommendations of CBI.
The job profile of an SI also includes frequent visits to the court. SI’s job role involves discharging duties which can be really tough at times. Apart from all these challenges, the job demands lot of travelling across India, as well as abroad (sometimes). The job is a bit stressful and there are chances of your work-life balance getting disturbed. But that is also the challenging aspect of an SI’s career.
The salary, pay and allowances for the post of SI are handsome and rewarding. Apart from this, there are regular upgrades in dearness allowances by the government and a pay-scale revision on the basis of recommendations provided by the Government appointed Pay Commission. According to current pay scale, a newly recruited SI would receive a salary of anywhere between INR 38,000 to 40,000 per month approximately. The salary is also subject to revision based on the location of posting.
The career growth of an SI in CBI is quite good. It normally takes around 5 years to get first promotion which is the designation of an Inspector. However, the second promotion takes usually 12-13 years of service. After that the 3rd promotion happens after an interval of 10 years. In some cases where a person joined as SI at very young age and maintained a very good record during his tenure, can go up to the rank of Deputy Inspector general of Police.

Most of the selected candidates are placed in Delhi Zone usually. Transfers are not as such frequent though work related travelling could be quite hectic. After completion of training, candidates are asked for their zone preference, out which majority of the posts are allocated in Delhi zone only. Candidates opting for some other zones are also transferred to Delhi in the later part of their career. Thus, those who want to stay in the NCR region then the post of SI is good for them.
However, it shall be noted that someone willing to prepare further for other competitive exams then the job is not suitable for them as it involves no fixed duration of work. The working hours are sometimes extended over 2 to 3 weeks without any break.

Thus in total, a newly recruited SI in CBI has to undergo a training of 59 weeks over a period of 1 year out of which 42 weeks are allotted for training in CBI academy.
After selection, the dossiers of the selected candidates will be sent to CBI headquarters in New Delhi. Then selected candidates would be called for a physical test where minimum physical standards would be tested. Finally, the training of the candidates (who have passed the medical test) will start at CBI academy in Ghaziabad.
