UPSC CDS 2016 Exam on Oct 23, Admit Card to be out soon

The second phase of CDS (Combined Defence Services) Application process, was completed on August 12, 2016. The CDS Admits cards will be available for download soon too. The Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) conducts this exam two times each year. In a notification released for CDS II on July 16, 2016, the commission announced October 23, 2016 as the proposed CDS Exam Date.

The First phase of CDS Exam was successfully conducted by the board on February 14, 2016. The CDS Resultsfor Phase 1 were declared on May 3, 2016.

CDS Admit Card 2016

Since the CDS Exam Date is out, the CDS Admit Card will soon be out for download too. Candidates must download them before the exam, to know about their test city, venue and timings. In an official statement, the CDS Admit Cards for UPSC CDS II 2016 will be available for download three weeks before that exam date i.e. from first week of October. They can be downloaded from UPSC’s Official Website.

CDS 2016 Exam Pattern

The CDS Exam is nearly six weeks away from now. It is time for all the candidates to gear up and prepare rigorously. The right approach and a planned strategy would definitely work out.

The CDS Exam opens opportunities in many fields such as joining the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy etc. There process of selection will be different, based upon your eligibility and marks.


The CDS Exam Paper consists of three subjects- Quantitative Aptitude, English Language and General Awareness. Candidates who are applying for Officers Training Academy will only sit for the English and GK papers. The time allotted for each section would be for 2 hours. The maximum marks allotted to the written exam and interview will be equal to each course i.e. the maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be 300, 300, 300 and 200 each for admission to the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers’ Training Academy respectively.

All the questions in the papers will be objective only. The question paper will be in Hindi and English both. In the question papers, wherever necessary, questions involving the metric system of Weights and Measures only will be set. Candidates must also note that you cannot use calculators for answering the objective-type questions.

CDS 2016 Selection Process

 A list of candidates who clear the written CDS Exam 2016 will be prepared by the UPSC. The qualifying candidates will be then called for the intelligence and personality test at the Service Selection Board based on their preference by the respective service HQ.


The two-tier CDS Selection Process will put all selected students to stage one test of reporting at Selected centres. The ones who clear the first stage, will qualify for Round 2/ remaining tests. The ones who do not clear the first stage, will be sent back home. Those who qualify both the stages, must submit a photocopy of the below documents:

  • Matriculation pass certificate or equivalent in support of date of birth
  • Bachelors Degree/Provisional Degree alongwith mark sheets of all the years/semesters in support of educational qualification.

The final selection will be made in order of merit subject to medical fitness and suitability in all other respects and number of vacancies available.

CDS Exam Pattern

There are total 3 papers in CDS namely English (100 marks), General Knowledge (100 marks) and Elementary Mathematics (100 marks). Preparatory Tips for attempting English Section

English comprehension section looks easy, but actually it’s a tricky one! So don’t get fooled by this one. This area of CDS exam will check candidate's knowledge on Syllogisms, Contextual Usage, Jumbled paragraphs, Sentence correction etc. Language comprehension is said to be the easiest section among all the sections, as its tests your basic knowledge, which you must have studied in your school time. Revisit and revise your grammar books and try to attempt the mock questions provided in the book, this will strengthen what you have studied earlier. Watching English movies can also help to escalate your vocab. READ, SPEAK, LISTEN and WRITE as much as you can!

Preparatory Tips for attempting General Knowledge Section

This section tests your knowledge on current affairs, punch lines of brands and companies, Famous awards and prizes, Social issues, Awareness on sports, Automobiles, Entertainment, Politics etc. Candidate must prepare Question bank for this section which will further help him/her in checking the knowledge and how much you have studied for the exam. After complete revision, candidate can attempt answering these questions to get a reality check.

Preparatory Tips for attempting Mathematics Section

Try to learn as many formulas as you can, get a clear understanding of formulas and try to be on toes for mathematical calculations. This section includes a thorough knowledge on varied categories like Arithmetic Progression, Ratios and Proportion, Geometric mean, Algebra, Median, Profit & Loss, Trigonometry etc. In two days you can’t attain a through a knowledge of Quant section, so we will recommend you to go through previous year’s CDS exam papers, so that one can get a fair idea of type of questions, he/she will need to attempt in the exam.
