NEET Exam: Supreme Court favors Combined Counselling for Private Colleges

Recently in a new development at NEET mandate, Supreme Court has ordered a ban on counselling by private colleges on the basis of NEET score. A centralized counseling will be conducted by the state governments concerned. All the prior counselling, held by private colleges will stand cancelled as a fresh procedure will now take place. Supreme Court has asked the state government to complete the counselling process for both private and government colleges within a week

The further addition was made by a five-judge constitution bench, headed by Justice A R Dave, who said that two representatives from each private medical college would participate in the counselling process to be conducted by the state government.

National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test, more commonly known as NEET is introduced this year for admission into Medical and Dental courses across India. The entrance exam aims to provide a common ground for admissions in medical and dental colleges. It also aims to brig uniformity to the admission into medical courses. NEET 2016 is a highly competitive examination where lakhs of Medical students from India compete to get the most sought after seats.

Why the step was taken?

A contempt petition was filed by the Madhya Pradesh government, alleging that private medical colleges had been refusing to give admission to students who has participated through centralized counselling process conducted by state government. Also, the petition said that private colleges are forcing and insisting students to take admissions after conducting the counseling of their own. In wake of this, Supreme Court ordered to cancel the past counselling process conducted by private colleges and to start a fresh through a centralized counseling process.

The bench comprising of Justices AK Sikri, RK Agarwal, Adarsh K Goel and R Banumathi disapproved the demand of private colleges' and ordered that state government should hold the mandate to conduct combined counseling based on the ranking of students in NEET Exam.

Past Scenario

This year NEET 2016, was surrounded with lot of controversies, ranging from paper leak to Supreme Court orders. Before this order by the Supreme Court, private medical institutes would reach out to eligible candidates through offer letters on the basis of NEET Results.

For NEET 1, over 6, 00,000 medical aspirants appeared which was scheduled to be held on May 1. Another phase of NEET 2, which was held on July 24, 2016 was conducted successfully and NEET counselling Process in still ongoing and will end on September 30, 2016.

Effect on Candidates

Due to so many developments on NEET issue, medical aspirants has to face lot of problems, due to which they are unable to get clarity on what to do next and what is the current status of exam.

Not only students, but even parents are dealing with lot of confusions. Parents are complaining that they are receiving innumerable messages from admission touts, who are ensuring guaranteed admissions in private colleges. One of the parent says that "The situation is very confusing right now. Already, there has been much waiting in this year's medical admission process; confusion continues to haunt us.

NEET 2016 Seat Allotment

Each qualifying candidate will be allotted seat on the basis of merit list. To give you a clear idea on NEET Seat Allotment, we have listed some pointers, which should be taken into consideration at the time of counselling:

Check  NEET Participating Medical Colleges

  • The first step requires you to get yourself registered on the counselling website. The next step require candidates to fill their personal details in order successfully register themselves on the website.
  • Another step involves exercising of Choices, indicative seats and Locking of choices.
  • Online Seat Allotment (Round 1)
  • Declaration of Result (Round 1)
  • Reporting at the allotted Medical/Dental College for candidates qualifying in the 1st Round of counselling.
  • After the completion of Round 1 of counselling, the details vacant seats will be displayed.
  • The candidates who are eligible for the Round 2 of counselling can then fill in fresh Choices.
  • Seat allotment (Round 2)
  • Declaration of Result (Round 2)
  • Reporting at the Medical / Dental Colleges /Institutions for candidates qualifying Round 2

Hi Manish, The NEET Entrance Exam is a national level entrance test for MBBS/BDS admissions after class 12. if you want to get admission in best college for MBBS, you need to appear for this exam and Admission to medical courses will now be done through NEET, as directed by the Supreme Court.
