Admission to Ayush Undergrad Courses Through NEET from 2018-19

Last Updated - December 30, 2017

As per latest notification candidates applying for undergraduate (UG) courses in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) will be required to appear for the NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test). The Ministry of AYUSH will implement this from the 2018-19 academic session.

The NEET 2018 application form will be available in January 2018 on official website at - You will be able to fill it till around the fourth week of January 2018. This decision is an extension of the ministry’s previous decision in which the students seeking admissions to the AYUSH postgraduate (PG) courses were required to undergo the NEET exam from last year

AYUSH is a division of the Indian government and is liable for development, education and research in Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine), Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy, Sowa Rigpa (traditional Tibetan medicine) and other indigenous medicine systems in India.

In February 2017 also, the Ministry of AYUSH released a notice to start the admission process to the BAMS, BHMS and BUMS courses through NEET 2017. However, various states objected to this decision and now it is planned to be implemented from 2018.

CBSE conducts the exam every year for the students seeking admissions to various medical or dental colleges in India for the MBBS, BDS, MD, MS and MDS courses. It is expected that once the proposed system is implemented, no more private examinations will be conducted for filling seats at the various AYUSH colleges.

The exam date for this year is May 10, 2018. So those who wish to get an admission to the BHMS, BAMS or BUMS course in an Indian institution, will need to register for NEET 2018 and appear in the national level exam. Candidates must check out the Exam Syllabus for effective preparation.

The Ministry of AYUSH will be coordinating and discussing the requirements for the exam with CBSE) for AYUSH UG courses. Currently, the ministry is going through the regulatory issues involved in implementing this plan.

The inclusion of this proposal will bring all the AYUSH courses under one roof and will maintain the quality standards of students. This implementation will also centralize almost all the entrance examinations for MBBS, BDS, MD, MS and MDS courses with the various AYUSH courses such as BHMS, BAMS and BUMS.

It will standardize the courses in this stream and attract more students towards these courses. It will also eliminate the need for students to fill multiple application forms for various Ayurveda and Yoga universities across the country by providing a centralized process.

Currently, there are around 36,000 seats available under the AYUSH colleges for the various UG courses. The various state level universities conduct their individual entrance examinations for these AYUSH seats. Students can check out the overall Seat Intake across India.

There is already an increase of 30% in the registrations for Yoga courses post introduction of the World International Yoga Day from June 21, 2015. The government is planning to dedicate 100 parks for Yoga activities across India. These will be managed by Yoga groups or voluntary organisations.

According to the statistics, the NEET 2017 exam was held at 1921 examination centres in 103 cities in which around 11.4 Lakhs candidates appeared. With the inclusion of AYUSH courses in NEET, the number of candidates appearing in the entrance exam is expected to go higher.
