STATE LEVEL OFFLINE TEST
Physics is one of the important topics to cover for the JKCET. The Section consists of 60 questions in Paper A. JKCET 2017 Physics syllabus is based on the syllabus of 10+2 prescribed by Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination. In the previous year, candidates described Physics in to be of moderate level. The Questions in JKCET varied from theoretical and concept based to questions requiring Numerical and practical approach. The important units in Physics to study on high priority are Optics, Electronic Devices, Oscillations, and Waves. Candidates should focus on these units particularly while preparing for JKCET 2017.
JKCET Registration will commence in January 2017, and the examinations will be held in the first or second week of May 2017. The exam will be Pen & paper based test. JKCET 2017 examination will consist of two papers - Compulsory Paper A consists of Physics and Chemistry and Paper B consisting of Biology or Paper C for Mathematics. Paper B and C are optional and subject to the applied course in JKCET 2017.
The question paper comprises of 60 Multiple Choice Questions per subject. Candidates will be awarded one mark for each correct answer. For every incorrect answer 0.25, Mark will be deducted.
JKCET Physics consists of 60 questions in common Paper A for both engineering and Medical Exam. JKCET 2017 Physics syllabus is based on the 10+2 school curriculum prescribed by Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination. Important units in JKCET 2017 Physics are Optics, Current Electricity, Electrostatics, Oscillations and Waves, and Electronic Devices. Given below is detailed syllabus for these Units:
|Optics (7 marks)||Ray optics-Reflection of light, Spherical mirrors, mirror formula, Total internal reflection and its applications Refraction at spherical surfaces, Lenses, Thin lens formula, Lens-makers Formula, Magnification, Power of a Lens. Wave optics: Wave front and Huygens’ principle, reflection and refraction of plane wave at a plane surface using wave fronts. Interferences Young’s double slit experiment, Coherent sources and sustained interference of light. Diffraction due to a single slit, Resolving power of microscopes and astronomical telescopes, Polarisation, Plane polarized light; Brewster’s law|
|Current Electricity(4 marks)||Electric current Drift velocity, Ohm’s law, Electrical resistance, V-I characteristics (linear & non-linear), Electrical energy and power, Electrical resistivity and conductivity, Carbon resistors, Colour code for carbon resistors; Temperature dependence of resistance. Internal resistance of a cell, Potential difference and emf of a cell, Combination of cells in series and in parallel. Kirchhoff’s laws and their applications. Wheatstone bridge, Metre bridge. Potentiometer – principle and its application to measure the potential difference and for comparing e.m.f. of two cells. Measurement of internal resistance of a cell.|
|Electrostatics(4 marks)||Electric charges: Conservation of charge, Coulomb’s law-forces between two point charges, forces between multiple charges; superposition principle and continuous charge distribution. Electric field: Electric field due to a point charge, Electric field lines, Electric dipole, Electric field due to a dipole, Torque on a dipole in uniform electric field. Electric flux, Statement of Gauss’s theorem and its applications to find field due to infinitely long straight wire. Electric potential, Equipotential surfaces, Conductors and insulators, Dielectrics and electric polarization, Capacitor and Capacitance. Van de Graff Generator.|
|Oscillation and Waves (4 marks)||Periodic motion Periodic functions. Simple Harmonic Motion (S. H. M. ) and its equation; Phase; Oscillations of a spring-restoring force and force constant; Energy in S. H. M. – kinetic and potential energies; Simple pendulum-derivation of expression for its time period; Free, forced and damped oscillations, Resonance. Wave motion. Longitudinal and transverse waves, speed of a wave. Principle of superposition of waves, reflection of waves, Standing waves in strings and organ pipes, fundamental mode and harmonics, Beats Doppler effect.|
|Electronic Devices (4 marks)||Quantitative ideas on Energy bands in solids, conductors, insulators and semiconductors. Semiconductors; Semiconductor diode: I-V characteristics in forward and reverse bias; diode as a rectifier; Characteristics of LED, photodiode, solar cell and Zener diode Transistors Oscillator Logic gates (OR, AND, NOT) Concept of NAND and NOR gates. Transistor as a Switch|
JKCET Physics paper varies from Moderate to difficult level. Questions from topics like Kinematics, gravitation, work, energy and power are easy compared to Oscillations and Wave Motions, thermodynamics. Optics cover most number of questions in Physics section. The Questions asked are basic and of a moderate difficulty level. Oscillations and Wave motions question are difficult to solve. Numerical questions from all topic are tricky and require practice to get accurate results. 4 questions come from electronic devices and they are easy to score marks. Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism contains 5 questions which are mostly very difficult due to complex language of the questions. Overall if a candidate has prepared well, Physics section is the most scoring section in JKCET 2017.

There is no dearth of books and resources, but, a candidate often faces plenty of problems to choose the right book. When it comes to books, there are some highly reliable authored material for beginner and advanced level preparations’. Concept of Physics by HC Verma Vol-1 and Vol-2 are best for beginners, Understanding Physics for JEE Main & Advanced OPTICS & MODERN PHYSICS by DC Pandey is good books for OPTICS.
