IPU CET (IPU ENTRANCE EXAM) 2017 NEWS
STATE LEVEL OFFLINE TEST
Ishan Mehandru scored an All India Rank 114 appeared for IPU CET to seek admission to BJMC programme. He appeared for IPU Entrance Exam in the year 2014. He cleared the IPU CET Cut off for many institutes affiliated by IP University. But he decided to take admission in VIPS (Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies).
In his view, self-study is the major hack that can help you clear the IPU CET exam. Revision of basic topics and practicing them regularly helps you get a great score and a better rank. He says coaching classes; their study material and online study material provided him no aid in his preparations.
Read the article below to know more about his preparation strategies to get a good rank in IPU CET.
Ans. I went to a coaching center, but I didn’t continue the coaching after attending classes for few days. I never really followed up on my classes there. It turned out dissatisfactory as the entrance exam had questions of a simpler level. There weren’t any HOTS questions in the exam.
Ans. None - I just generally kept myself updated about current affairs throughout the year. Also, I am an avid reader and like to watch critically engaging movies from time to time - during High School, both my activities at this end dipped down due to my boards - but as I later found out, my rank could have been even higher if I continued with them - as I am now.
Ans. I made sure that I log onto some news websites before I go to sleep - apart from following news channels and other media outlets on Facebook too. The Indian Express, the Hindustan Times and the Hindu - all of them have pretty good online outlets. I would also suggest the Scroll and the Wire especially.
Ans. I suppose it would not be a bad idea to Google a few standard LR and MR questions and practice them on your own. You can improve your Language skills if you keep reading fiction and non-fiction articles from credible sources. The Mass Communication entrance does not focus as much on your scientific skills, more than the current affairs.
Ans. I consulted no particular book for the preparation of the aptitude section. The trick is to keep yourself updated with cultural and current affairs. Be curious and follow up on renowned authors, film makers and music artists etc. (Hint: Not Chetan Bhagat, Rohit Shetty or Honey Singh.) Go beyond popular media - not that there is anything wrong with appreciating the mainstream as well - but keep yourself open to every perspective.
Ans. I took a few mock tests at my coaching center but they were majorly useless. I scored well though but the level of questions in their mock tests were of a higher level as compared to the questions in the exam.
Ans. At that time I consulted The Hindustan Times, The Indian Express and The Hindu. But now The Scroll has come up with a really good Mobile App and the Wire has some critically engaging opinion pieces too.
Ans. Follow the media portal mentioned above regularly. Don't panic too much and don’t enroll yourself with coaching centers that are of no use to your Mass Communication prep.
Apart from the GGSIPU, I also appeared for Symbiosis and St. Xaviers - cleared the entrance for the former (but fumbled in the interview because neither was I too well at the time, nor did the questions make much sense - compared to the ones in the "well prepared" "mock interview" offered by my coaching center) and couldn't clear the latter because
a) It has only 12/14 seats for the general category
b) I was completely stumped by their entrance exam, nothing that I couldn't answer, but I was so shocked when I saw how creatively engaging and different it is from anything the coaching institute was offering.
Ans. I was also applying for SATs which might have been a bad idea and caused the real hurdle in my CBSE class XII exams. The support from my parents helps but the IPU exam is not that big of a deal if you are well versed with news affairs.
Ans. As I said earlier I made sure that I log onto some news websites before I go to sleep. Apart from following news channels and other media outlets on Facebook too. The Indian Express, the Hindustan Times and the Hindu - all of them have pretty good online outlets. I would also suggest the Scroll and the Wire especially.
Ans. I probably don’t take too much stress and trust in myself. Would definitely not drop my reading and writing activities as much as I did for XII. I eventually opted for DU and a liberal arts course because I was not so sure of committing myself to mass communication at the time - but VIPS has an amazing campus.
