We believe that the JAB aims at attracting these foreign students so that the IIT’s become globally recognized and lists among the top international education institution.
An official on the matter says that this idea has been approved in principle. For the IIT’s and the IIT Council, their final answer and approval shall come by next week. He also adds that the reason behind this move is to showcase India’s soft power. In any which way, the entry of these foreign students will not hamper the number of seats of Indian students. Their seats will be intact and not be eaten by these foreign students.
Another key reason for this move is to make it to the list of top international educational institutions. An official on the matter says that for any institute to rank internationally, it must possess a minimum number of foreign students. This key parameter of possessing international students is lacking in our IIT’s in a big way, although they have been excelling in all other parameters.
We see that IIT Bombayis entrusted with the job of implementing the programme. The official on the same adds that all foreign nationals will be given seat under supernumerary category.
This whole new change will bring along new exam centres in these countries. While Pakistan is seen to be left out due to home ministry’s objection, the choice of Ethiopia as the only country from Africa has evinced a lot of curiosity.

Mr. Gautam Biswas, the director of IIT Guwahati justifies the issue by saying that there have been a number of Ethiopian students in the PG courses in our IIT’s today. These students understand the value and it seems that IIT’s are a popular choice amidst them. These countries have been chosen keeping in mind the various factors such as how many students are participating currently in the IIT’s. IIT Guwahati itself had 8 students from Ethiopia in their M.Tech. Course.
As far as the UAE is concerned, it was selected because people of various nationalities reside in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The cost of admission will be recovered from the foreign student and the government will not bear any expense on account of foreign students. They will be given the same facilities as Indian students.
It is being believed that the government will not be bearing any cost on account of these foreign students. However, the admission cost will be recovered by these foreign students only. Mr. Biswas also assures that they same facilities will be given to these foreign students as that of Indian students.

If things work according to the plan, the IITs will be seen enrolling one lakh studentsby 2020. A proposal to be considered by the IIT council states that 30,000 additional non-resident students will be allowed to study at these institutes in the next three years.
We see a competition amongst the universities to rank themselves at the international podium. They bring in the best studies and facilities to top the list. Institutes like IIT Delhi,IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpurand IIT Roorkee have made it to the top 600 universities in the world, in the World University Ranking of 2015-2016. Some of the other universities that features in the list were:
The ranking is based on the 13 performance indicators. The indicators included the faculty-student ratio, global reputation of the university, its total resources, international students in the campus, its links to business and research excellence.
The Joint Entrance Examination or the JEE, is an engineering entrance exam that is conducted for candidates seeking admissions to the various engineering colleges pan India. It is conducted in two parts, the JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. They are regarded as one of the most difficult engineering exams.
JEE-Main exam is conducted for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) and JEE Advanced is conducted for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
This move seems to be beneficial for the foreign students. Whether it will bear positive/negative/neutral effects on Indian students is still uncertain. Let us watch for the final settlement.
