XAT 2018 Logical Reasoning Preparation Tips

Last Updated - October 07, 2017

We are providing you step by step information regarding XAT 2018 Logical Reasoning (LR) preparation. As you are going to appear for XAT entrance, the first thing you need to understand what Logical Reasoning is? What are the different sections & topics according to Exam format, which aspect requires extra attention & time?

How to tackle questions on Logical Reasoning?

To solve any problem related to LR, you have to apply a good mathematical procedure step by step to draw a unique conclusion from given statements. But keep one thing straight that whatever conclusion you have drawn must satisfy all preordered statements.

How to prepare?

Before starting preparation you need to know XAT Syllabus of reasoning & applications. Why you need to study them? How it would help you in career prospects because you are supposed to become part of management field.

  • Why Logical Reasoning Test for upcoming Managers/Recruiters? (May be ‘YOU’)

After completing your MBA Degree, when you will be working as a manager or recruiter in a corporate. At that time this test will be required to taken by you to hire new employees. If you are very well prepared & know all the terms & tactics related to logical reasoning then only you will be able to lead & judge others.

  • Before attempting any question in Logical Reasoning things to be checked first
  1. What is true? (Absolutely)
  2. What is mostly true? (90%)
  3. What is most likely true?
  4. What you think is true?
  5. What is NOT true?

Note: If any statement is true, then there are chances of possibilities depending upon extent of truth in that statement, whether it is completely true, likely to be true or almost true. And in case of false statement no possibilities can be considered.

  • Type of Logical Reasoning?

According to present test requirements Logical Reasoning is the common term which is used solely for different types of reasoning.

XAT Logical Reasoning

1. Deductive Reasoning

This test analyze you on the basis of your ability of deducing genuine facts which is acceptable everywhere.

For e.g. Major Premise: All Human are mortal

Minor Premise: Socrates is human

Conclusion: Socrates is mortal.

Explanation: As given in the below mentioned venn diagram that mortality is eternel & acquired by every human being. Socrates was human that is why he was mortal too

Note: Always remember that in Deductive logic you are not gathering new information. You are just arranges the information which is already given in new way but acceptable in every situation

2. Inductive reasoning

This is somewhere related to mathematical induction which you have studied in earlier classes. To prove any statement we just followed a pattern more than one time, say ‘N’ number of times & then generalize the statement to give final answer.

Note: For conclusions based on inductive reasoning you may not be 100% sure. You have to conclude on the basis of trend pertaining.

Example.1. ALL swans are white

Explanation: This conclusion is drawn by considering large number of ‘white swans’ with no emphasis on whether any ‘black’ swan exists or not. But it is not acceptable with 100% surety that there is no ‘black’ swan exists in the world.

Inductive reasoning may be wrong, as in this case when a black swan is found it appears to be wrong. Most of the time answers satisfied the given situation.

Example. 2. 6, 9, 12, 15, ?

Answer: The trend shown that the answer is 18.

Explanation: You may not be 100% sure for above answer. Because it is not mentioned that to which scale the series belongs, whether temperature, hours or some other scale.

3. Abductive Reasoning

This form is very similar to the second form ‘inductive’ reasoning. It is completely depends on guess work as its solution requires assumptions based on probability. The condition whose probability is more is considered to be more feasible.

Example: Major Premise: The box is filled with red balls.

Minor Premise: James has a red ball in his hand.

Conclusion: The red ball in James’s hand was taken out of the box.

Explanation: To solve this case we can perform only guess work. It is just a possibility that the red ball in James’s hand was taken from the box, but it is also possible that the ball is given by someone else to James.

Strategies to improve Logical Reasoning

  1. Practice

Keep practicing as much as questions as you can. Sometimes your attempting speed depends on logic, which is required to solve question at right time in right way.

Practice will help you a lot to manage time for different type of questions. You will be able to identify what type of question needs how much time.

  1. Categorization

Classify your problem on time span & complexity level & devote time according to requirement.

  1. Learning

Do not solve question in different way any time you attempting it. Just maintain your own method & stick to that only otherwise you will be confused.

  1. Make Notes

When you start preparing make note of those problems which creates issue when you have been solving them.

What are the ways to attempt Questions in Logical Reasoning?

  1. Find out the classification of different arguments & their relationship with each other
  2. Identify flaws
  3. Recognize point of disagreement
  4. Identify principle & rules
  5. Collect supported statements to gather correct answer for your questions
  6. Draw relevant conclusion to analyze your answer
