XAT General Knowledge Section is another important section apart from Decision Making which makes it different from other management entrance tests. Though this section is not included in determining the percentile and the cutoff in the first stage of selection process, still it has importance. Score in this section is very helpful while final selection process. XLRI considers GK section for final round of selection and some other top b schools also consider this while final selection. So a low score in this section may eliminate you from your dream B school. Do not ignore this section.

Firstly GK section was asked along with Essay writing when it was reintroduced in 2013.

Time Allocation- GK Section was when asked in XAT 2013; it was combined with essay writing section with time allotment of 40 minutes for both the parts. In 2014 XAT conducting authorities combined GK with aptitude section and time allotted was 150 minutes for this whole section. Since then the same pattern is being followed. No. of questions asked now is 20, which means you can devote 20 minutes for this section.

Following is the analysis for good attempts in this
05 – 10 correct – Average score
10 – 15 correct – Good Score
15 plus correct – Excellent
Being very vast subject Syllabus for General knowledge cannot be defined. However there are some topics from which mostly questions are asked. These topics include-

Most of the candidates prepare intensively for QA and English but give less time to GK. Always remember, one mark in GK is equal to one mark in Quantitative Ability and one mark in English. Average time taken to solve each GK question is very less. It takes approximately 30 seconds for each GK question. Also, less effort is needed to score better in GK and as cut offs are generally low in GK, it helps in improving overall marks.
As GK is so vast, it is not possible to learn everything so pick areas according to exam. You need to focus on these most important areas. You should concentrate on the following areas:

Questions in general awareness will be from business, economics and politics related to current business environment. You should read newspapers to be aware of current affairs in these areas.
