JEE MAIN 2016 Preparation Tips by Shubham Choudhary

Last Updated - March 20, 2017

Shubham secured 6700 rank in JEE Main 2009, scoring 195 marks. Shubham emphasized on classroom preparation from Class 11th and 12th. Apart from classroom preparation, coaching classes and PPTs can be very handy for preparation as suggested by Shubham in the interview with us.

Some of the excerpts from the conversation with Shubham are discussed below. It will clear a lot of apprehension among the aspirants about to go about preparing for JEE Main.

Ques. Did you qualify for JEE-Advanced?

Ans. Yes

Ques. How would you rate the following Preparation Strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Ans.

Ques. Did you take Coaching Classes? If yes, how did they help in your story?

Ans. There was only one JEE exam in 2009, which I qualified. I took coaching for IITJEE in the year 2007 and 2008, i.e, with class XI and XII. It was extremely helpful since I was able to complete the whole course by December of the previous year of exam and then prepare for boards and revise. It helped me crack a 90+ in board exams and clear the Olympiads too, giving me enough confidence for the JEE and AIEEE. Due to health issues my IIT JEE exam was severely compromised but I was able to regain the rank in AIEEE and manage to get admission in a prestigious college, saving a year.

Ques. Rate the role of Coaching Institutes in cracking JEE Main

Ans. 8

Ques. How did you manage JEE Main Preparation along with your Class 12th exam?

Ans. With the changing patterns, the JEE Main course is quite relevant to what's being taught in class 12. For me, completing the course by Dec, 2008 was crucial in order to start taking JEE Mock tests and prepare for boards. Apart from daily or alternate day coaching, I believe at least an hour or two of study daily will help in keeping the performance on track. PPTs solving is a good way to do that. Solving NCERTs helps in a major way since they teach the most basic concepts which are not only asked in boards but also create the base for the advanced concepts asked in JEE.

The whole thing asked in any exam depends on how strong your concepts are, and more than the coaching, your understanding and NCERTs help in that

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. Maths, specially coordinate Geometry was my weak area. Electromagnetic physics and Inorganic chemistry were my fortes. For maths I completed NCERT and studied books like S L Loney and other advanced practice books. But even then this was one area where I scored the least marks in JEE. The teachers in my coaching were extremely helpful in clearing out the doubts.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. I took a test series by Akash institute for JEE, by Career Point for AIEEE (Both distance learning.) For on center tests, I stayed with Resonance, that was also my classroom coaching institute.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section

Ans. Strategy: Use Mnemonics to learn Inorganic, it's easier than you think. Use schaum series for Organic, you won't need another book.

Study NCERTs, they're the best for boards and JEE both.

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. Strategy: PRACTICE. There's simply no alternative to it. Geometry and Functions are concept based subjects that don't need too much practice but Trigonometry, Quadratic and Integration will simply not be done if you don't give them time.

NCERT for boards, SL Loney for Co-ordinate and Trigono and Classroom notes and Modules for other topics.

Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?

Ans. I'd practice more and relax. Taking tension before the main exam and taking too much stress lead to a fall in performance. The three months before the exam aren't only important for studying, but more than that you need to maintain a good schedule and eat/sleep right. The study you've done in the past two years is more than enough if you can give the paper with confidence. Analyzing mock tests and strengthening weak areas is another important thing to do.

Ques. Write some of the Preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. 4 Months is quite enough if you follow the right strategy. Give it at least 5 hours a day. 1 hour to each subject and 1 hour to mixed practice. 1 extra hour to a particular topic that you hate the most. Try and divide this time instead of doing it at a stretch. A good example will be 6-7 in morning, 4-6 in evening and then 9-11 in night. This schedule will also not disturb your lunch/dinner and school timing (if any) and give you a good 6-7 hours of sleep. If you're taking a mock, take it at the same time as the real exam.

Don't eat heavy stuff. Read good books, not necessarily academic and exercise/walk to stay fit. Make short notes to revise in the last month. Ask your teachers/friends if you have any doubts. Don't just leave any topic because it's too difficult, nothing is too difficult.
