JEE MAIN 2017 Preparation Tips by Anokr Kumar

Last Updated - March 30, 2017

Anokr Kumar appeared for the JEE Main in the year 2013. He scored 68% percentile and managed to secure admission in Krupajal Engineering College.

Ques. Name of the Institution where you were admitted?

Ans. I was admitted into Krupajal engineering college

Ques. What did you choose- Offline or Online mode for taking up the exam?

Ans. I opted for offline mode exam because I was not fully aware of online mode exams. Also, since childhood we get habituated of using pen and paper for reading and writing instead of using any other electronic media, especially for exams.
And one more thing, online exams needs a bit practice too and exams makes everyone nervous and meanwhile getting more tension by opting something new(as I was unaware of using that) was not a good idea for me. I guess if I had a knowledge about how online exams work then, I must had a second thought for that but I didn’t get anything about online mode of exam so I had one choice remaining - offline mode exams.

Ques. Were you able to qualify for JEE-Advanced?

Ans. Yes

Ques. How would you rate the following Preparation Strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Coaching ClassesNCERT BooksCoaching Study MaterialOnline Study MaterialSubject-wise ClassesSelf-Study
Very HighVery HighVery HighLowModerateVery High

Ques. Did you take Coaching Classes? If yes, how did it help you?

Ans. After 2012 pattern was changed as they introduced JEE Main and JEE Advanced. For first time I appeared for JEE was in year 2012 and that time separate exams were conducted and for that I took coaching classes(2 years) in Resonance,Kota.

At Resonance the environment, the faculty, study material was very good. Faculty can feel your nerves and they make you extremly comfortable during the lectures. Their teaching methodology is incomparable. They have their technique called "DPP" i.e daily practice problems and if the DPP is practiced as it says 'daily' it is obviously superb and if it is not practiced then it becomes 'daily PENDING problems.

In nut-shell, they helped me a lot. They really helped me to learn the basics and implementing them. Even today I thank them as they taught me what I was supposed to learn to get my future.

Ques. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate role of coaching institutes in the preparation of the exam?

Ans. I would rate it at 9.

Ques. How did you manage JEE Main Preparation along with your Class 12th exam?

Ans. Seriously saying Class 12 board exam percentile are very important. What school teaches you and what coaching class does, both are very different. In school they teach you how to solve a problem showing every step and in coaching classes they teach you how to get answer quickly, not too much steps as you are supposed to do a number of questions in very less time for each question. So managing both exams is very tough job and frankly speaking I didn’t manage it well.

For board exams I practiced math and other numerical in step wise method because they score even for steps, so steps are very much important. For language and other papers I joined some classes on weekends like English class, they taught me the literature and it worked well. Most importantly, regular practice is the key and I think I missed this point so I secured less.

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. Inverse trigonometry was my weakest and I managed it with my doubt classes in resonance during my two year coaching. Teacher helped me a lot. They taught me why this step was taken why not that step, what to follow and what should not. They guided me in every step and then I think I did good in that. Again organic chemistry was my weak and same I did with same strategy. They guided me and I practiced.

Physical and Inorganic chemistry was strong area. Most of the time I practiced my strong part to make it even stronger.

Here some other Tips to crack JEE MAIN Exam

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. No extra mock papers were taken by me because Resonance itself took regular exams named as PT and CT and they were conducted every 2nd or 3rd week covering recently taught topics. They also conducted major exams covering the entire syllabus and these exams helped a lot.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section

Ans. Organic chemistry is the key, if one gets a good command over it then be happy for the subject. My teachers always said it is the best part of chemistry but unfortunately I didn’t get that part very much.

Physical chemistry is full of numerical practice that are and a bit lengthy but easy.

Inorganic chemistry has a lot to learn. Nomenclature part is a bit tricky but one gets familiar to that soon.

NCERT is a good book for that along with CENGAGE ORGANIC. I felt that to be best for physical and inorganic part. However, I always preferred my coaching materials.

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. Regular practice, regular practice and the same regular practice is very much important for Math along with this one must know why this formula is used and why it is not. It is a subject to learn not to remember. My Resonance study material was the best for this subject along with NCERT book(for board preparation).

Hall and Knight is also a very nice book for higher algebra. Many of my friends used that book and even I used it.

Ques. If you were to go back in time and change few things to get into a better college, what would you do?

Ans. I wish I could take better marks in my board exams because only for my board marks I was not allotted NIT as I got my admission in 2013 and by that time 40% marks had to be added in 60% of JEE score.

And after this new calculation I was left blank, I didn’t secure good in boards.

Ques. Could you mention few Preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. 4 months is very less time for a life changing exam. Every student has some weak and some strong areas or even subject. Many people ask you to improve your weak part but they don't say you to improve your strong area too. As per me, strong areas must be made stronger because for this part of your syllabus you are fully aware of the topics and problems as learning new thing is always very tough and also it takes a lot of time. Practice that weak area too but be more confident in that part which you feel as 'you can do that'.
