JEE MAIN 2017 Preparation Tips by D Koteswar Rao

Last Updated - March 30, 2017

D Koteswar Rao appeared for the JEE Main when it was still called AIEEE in the year 2011. He scored 210 marks and managed to secure admission into one of the prestigious IIITs- IIIT Allahabad.

Ques. Name of the Institution where you were admitted

Ans. First round – NIT Raipur

Second Round – NIT Durgapur

Third Round -  NIT Surat

Fourth - IIIT Allahabad

Ques. What did you choose- Offline or Online mode for taking up the exam?

Ans. I chose offline mode of examination. Online mode was just started and was not available in many cities. Also, I had not given any online exam before and I was not much confident about it.
But now I feel online mode is a much safer choice as the chance of mismarking is very less. In offline mode, you have to choose the option on OMR sheet with black pen/pencil. In online you can change your answer till the moment of submission. Also the options are written with answers which highly reduces the risk of marking wrong while solving correctly.

Ques. How would you rate the following Preparation Strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Ques. Did you take Coaching Classes? If yes, how did it help you?

Ans.  I took 2 years coaching in Roorkee where my father was posted at that time. Coaching classes are important if you are not much confident about the study/course preparation methodology. My coaching class used to conduct objective quiz every week so I got accustomed to it. I was also familiar with the tips and tricks involved in solving MCQs. Also, there were many other students who gave test along with me, interacting with them after the tests was always an eye opener. Regularly following the coaching class helped me to complete the course well in time with buffer time left for revision and practice previous year papers.

If you have guidance from elder brother/ school teacher and strictly follow the study material of any distance learning coaching, in class coaching is not necessary.

Ques. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate role of coaching institutes in the preparation of the exam?

Ans. I would rate it at 7, rest depends on self-study.

Ques. How did you manage JEE Main Preparation along with your Class 12th exam?

Ans. Class XII boards are not that difficult to crack if you attend classes regularly with attention. One thing my school teachers used to do was conduct written test after every chapter and discuss it in class later on. They used to guide us what else could be written to make our answer more meaningful and to the point. This helped me to plan out a strategy for board exams even if the subject was not my strong point. They also used to hand out the list of important questions and FAQs after each chapter and gave us quizzes to solve. I made a habit to solve the objective questions from competitive books of the chapter which was taught in class. This made the last minute revision easy and helped me to simultaneously prepare for JEE/AIEEE. It is being steady that helped to crack both at the same time. I secured 94.2% in boards along with decent rank in AIEEE.

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. My strong area was Chemistry, physics was good enough. My weak area was math, especially integration which was very important topic. My basic strategy was to improve on my strength to beat everyone else and work on my weak areas so that it does not hurt me anymore. In mathematics, I first completed all the other topics which could fetch me some marks, how small they make be. I perfected hard my combinatorics and probability. I learned and developed few tricks which helped me solve the basic and intermediate problems of differential and integration. I tried to cover for the loss (make sure it’s not that huge of loss) of mathematics in chemistry and tried to score near perfect. As a result i scored 100/120 in chemistry and 50/120 in Math. Not bad from where I started.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. My coaching class used to conduct their own test series. They also provided us with a package of online test series. I believe it’s important to go through at least 10 mock tests conduct with proper environment and timing because it helps you to develop your own strategy. It is important to devise how many minutes you want to give to which section. Which section you are comfortable at attempting first. During my test series only, I had realized that I am bad at marking in OMR sheets so I decided that is I should solve 10 questions and mark them in OMR so that i don't jumble up later on. Also, it made me feel comfortable that this much portion i have completed and focus on the remaining ones. My friends took resonance, brilliant tutorial and fiitjee test series and gave good feedback to me.

Ques. Physics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. HC Verma. You should consider it as bible of physics JEE/AIEEE. In physics and mathematics it is important not just to get correct answer but solve it in optimal time using the best approach. There are many traditional methods of solving physics problems but the hooks and crooks of the problem statement can be used to reduce the problem solving time. Practice 5 varieties every type of questions to prefect your problem solving approach. Many a time questions will be there which will test your understanding of multiple topics in one questions. Thus, It is important to concentrate on both classical and modern physics.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section

Ans. One book NCERT. There is hardly any question which you cannot solve if you follow NCERT properly. Chemistry questions usually do not come out of the box. Also it is important to have good grasp on chemistry so that you can solve this section as fast as possible and keep buffer time for physics whose questions are usually lengthier. All the properties of elements and organic compounds, formulas should be on your finger tips.Make sure you complete the Arihant: AIEEE in 40 days of chemistry, which helps to understand the pattern of questions asked usually in exams. Some of my friends followed Pradeep chemistry and gave me good reviews then.

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. There are many of my friends, friends of friends who cracked ranks solely on the basis of mathematics. It depends on pure practice.

Ques. If you were to go back in time and change few things to get into a better college, what would you do?

Ans. If I could go back in time, I will ask my coaching institute to organize a special/crash course of mathematics (differentiation and integration) for two months before the test date. Do whatever the best with numbers and expressions in that time and give a lot of mock tests during the last month of preparation. I would have rather given an online test instead of offline so that I don't waste my time re and rechecking that I have marked the intended answer in OMR. This would have saved me 10-15 mins which is a lot time if you consider a test which is given by above 5 lakh people.

Ques. Could you mention few Preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. I would say that before staring any preparation, give 3 full fledged mock tests. It can be previous year papers if you have not seen them till now. Get your answers and rough sheets (especially this) marked by school teachers. They can help you analyze your approach and your strong and weak areas. Make sure the paper you solve has all/most the topics of examination covered. I would advise you to divide your time into 40 30 and 30%. 40% in which you scored max. 30 in mid and 30 least scored one. Practice your strongest move so that you can beat the best enemy with that move and improve on your weakest zone so that even strong blow does not collapse you to ground. Remember slow and steady wins the race. First complete all the sections and complete the objective questions of that particular topic. keep a buffer time of two weeks to again reboot the mock test series. Reanalyze your strength and weakness and work on particular topics only. All the best.
