Last Updated - March 30, 2017

Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is conducted by CBSE to shortlist aspiring candidates seeking admission to undergraduate engineering programmes to Centrally-funded technical institutions such as NIT (National Institute of Technology), IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and other reputed institutes. The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is bifurcated into JEE (Main) examination and JEE (Advanced) examination.

The JEE (Main) exam is essentially the first screening test for the IITs. The exam is scheduled to be held on April 02, 2017. JEE (Main) is basically an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced) i.e. only those candidates who will qualify in the JEE (Main) examination will be allowed to appear for JEE (Advanced) examination conducted exclusively for IITs. JEE (advanced) 2017 will be for held on May 21, 2017. Candidates can attempt JEE (Main) for a maximum three times. JEE Main comprises 2 papers – Paper 1 is meant for B. Tech aspirants while candidates applying for B. Arch course should attempt Paper 2.

Paper I comprise 3 sections – Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. There will be 90 questions in total (30 questions from each section) and all the questions will carry 4 marks each.

Paper 2 consists of 82 questions. Mathematics and Aptitude comprise 80 questions of 4 marks each while Drawing section has 2 questions of total 70 marks. Negative marking of 1 mark would be applicable for both the papers.

JEE Main Paper 2 is an architecture entrance exam for admissions to the 5 years undergraduate B. Arch or B. Planning courses at the NIT’s and the centrally funded institutes as well as the self- financed institutes participating in the JEE. JEE Main Paper 2 is only conducted in Pen and Paper mode. Candidates who are applying for JEE Main Paper 1 can also apply for JEE Main Paper 2 and vice versa but the Application fee is different for appearing in both or single exam. It measures the aptitude of the applicant for specific field of study, i.e. Architecture. The test measures drawing and observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking ability, that have been acquired over a long period of time, and that are related to specific field of study, i.e. Architecture.

Out of the total 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in the country, only 9 offer admission in B. Arch course and there are 599 B. Arch seats in these NITs. There are 5 CFTIs/ STFIs which also offer B. Arch/ B. Planning course and there are 331 seats. These institutes offer admission on the basis of CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board). CSAB conducts a common counselling process for engineering/ architecture admission.

JEE Main B. Arch is a 3-hour examination that includes three sections – Mathematics, Aptitude and Drawing/Sketching Test. The aptitude test must be attempted in English only. Students must carry their own geometry box set, pencils, erasers, crayons and color pencils; borrowing is NOT ALLOWED during the exam.

Candidates will be offered admission on the basis of the JEE Main Paper 2 scores and the normalized marks of class 12 in the ratio 60:40. Further the admission will be offered based on the choices by the candidates during JEE Main 2017 Counselling.

JEE Main Paper 2 Result

JEE Main 2017 Result is expected to be declared by CBSE on April 27, 2017. The JEE Main score will be determined on the basis of your performance in Paper-1 & Paper-2 and 60% weightage will be given to your performance while preparing the rank list. So, it is very important to perform well in it. Moreover, your JEE Advanced Exam eligibility will be determined on the basis of the JEE Main 2017 Score.

The qualified candidates would be invited to participate in counselling and seat allotment process based on JEE Main 2017 Cutoff. The counselling process for admission to various engineering seats across different institutes would be conducted by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), CSAB (CSAB SFTI and CSAB NEUT) and respective state counselling authorities.

JEE Main Paper 2 Evaluation in case of Tie

In case of a tie, i.e. when two or more candidates obtain equal marks (by giving 60% weightage to performance in JEE (Main) and 40% weightage to normalized marks in Class 12th or equivalent qualifying examination), inter-se merit of such candidates shall be decided in the following order:

1. Rank list for admission to B. Arch/B. Planning (in institutions other than IITs)

2. Resolution by marks obtained in Aptitude Test in Paper-2 (B. Arch./B. Planning.) in JEE (Main) – 2017. Candidate obtaining higher marks will be given better rank.

3. Resolution by marks obtained in Drawing Test in Paper-2 (B. Arch./B. Planning.) in JEE (Main) – 2017. Candidate obtaining higher marks will be given better rank.

4. Resolution by total normalized qualifying exam marks. Candidates obtaining higher normalized marks will be given better rank.

5. Resolution by finding the ratio of positive marks and negative marks. Candidate having higher absolute value of the ratio will be given better rank.

6. If the resolution is not possible after this criterion, candidates will be given the same rank.
