We often hear the NMAT by GMAC aspirants calling the test expensive. They feel is it a high-priced exam in comparison with India’s other top exams. Also, they believe that the NMAT Exam Cost is not as worthy. This is maybe because a limited number of B-Schools in India accept the NMAT Scores.

For now, the NMAT Scores are being accepted by 18 institutes. Some of them are, SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai (NMIMS); ICFAI Business School Hyderabad; Woxsen School of Business Management, Hyderabad; Shoolini University, Himachal Pradesh; Gitam School of International Business, Andhra Pradesh; BML Munjal University, Haryana, and Amity University.
The most popular choice of the all the candidates is the NMIMS, Mumbai. It is not less than a dream for them to be a part of this college and they burn the candle from both ends to get admitted in it. Also, NMAT is not the only test score that one needs to have, to be able to get into the other B-schools. We hope all the candidates know that NMIMS is the institute admitting students upon their NMAT by GMAC score only. The other 17 B-Schools accept scores of other exams too, such as CAT, XATand GMAT, to admit students.
In a statement by an NMAT 2015 candidate from Kolkata, he shares his thoughts about the high-priced NMAT exam. He feels that paying a high registration fee, retest and rescheduling fee is not worthy. This is so, because NMIMS is the only institute accepting the NMAT by GMAC scores. Students are often baffled whether to choose a good college (NMIMS) or to measure the worth of money being spent. He also tells us how he was able to save a seat for himself in one of the branches of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) through his excellent CAT Scores. He feels lucky to have chosen an IIM!
As a general rule, candidates who register for the NMAT Exam, pay a registration fee of INR 1,700 or INR 2,000 (late fee). Those who sit for a retest due to an unsatisfactory score, pay INR 1,700. In case of rescheduling the NMAT Exam Date, one must pay an additional fee of INR 1,000. The test registration fee enables candidates to send their score reports to 7 institutes accepting the NMAT score. Candidates must pay an additional fee of INR 200 per score card if they are willing to apply for more institutes.
For the Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI), one needs to pay another additional fee of INR 1,000 to be able to appear for NMIMS. For all other non-NMIMS institutes, they need to pay up as per the admission norms of the particular institute. This amount is also exclusive of taxes.
Another dispirited candidate, Shashank Prabhu, who is also CAT 2011 Topper and director at Learning Roots, shares his thoughts on this issue. He says that someone who is attempting multiple tests, will just be paying INR 6,000 to appear for NMIMS entrance test only. On the other hand, the cumulative registration fee for all the other entrance exams is much lesser than this. These exams also give you options better than NMIMS. Hence, he doesn’t see a point in spending so much for one single exam.

To draw a comparison, the cost of taking NMAT by GMAC exceeds that of all the other institutes by a considerable margin. The CAT Exam has been priced at INR 1,600, XATat INR 1,500 (and INR 250 for every additional programme of XLRI, Jamshedpur, such as PGDM human resource management, PGDM business management and PGDM global business management, etc), SNAP at INR 1,500 (with application forms to individual institutes being sold separately).
An NMAT 2016 candidate from Mumbai shares her views on this expensive exam. She tells us that she will be appearing for the NMAT Exam only once. If she is able to save a seat in NMIMS, Mumbai, nothing like it. If at all she fails to clear the exam, she won’t sit for a retest. She feels that the exam fee is not the worth. Instead, she will concentrate on improving her CAT Scores and aim for better colleges at lesser price.
When NMAT was conducted by NMIMS, candidates for the paper-based test had to pay an additional fee of INR 1,000 if they secured a top rank and wanted to register for the GDPI round. In the year 2009, more than 50,000 candidates registered for the NMAT Exam. This was the time when NMAT became an online exam. Along with this, it became to be known as ‘the costliest amongst the other popular Indian MBA entrance exams’, since it was priced at INR 1,650.
Later in 2012-2013, option for retest/reschedule was introduced. In the year 2015, more than 70,000 candidates registered for the exam out of which 31% actually appeared.
“More than 2, 30,000 scores were sent to the 16 NMAT by GMAC-accepting universities across India in 2015. NMIMS received close to 54,000 scores,” says Vikram Shah, director, product management, GMAC.
We think that pursuing a course in one of the prestigious institutes of India, NMIMS-Mumbai, is a no less than a wish fulfilled. So, somewhere its high-priced registration fee can be justified. This fee is pretty less in comparison to what you pay as any B-Schools admission fee.

The NMAT has another advantage to offer- the provision for retest /rescheduling the exam. This, in case of CAT Exam, is not possible. Candidates wait for an entire year to appear again, which somewhere eats a lot of their time.
Also, we see candidates appearing atleast once for the NMAT Exam to test their destiny. The probability of going for a second or third attempt is less, but there. With increasing attempts, probability of getting lucky increases too. So, do not lose hope and prepare to the best of your ability.
For all you candidates who wish to apply for the NMAT Exam, the NMAT by GMAC Registrations close on October 3, 2016. The NMAT by GMAC Results shall be declared in mid-January 2017.
So, gear up and we wish you all the luck!
