MAT 2017 Selection Procedure

MAT 2017 Selection Procedure primarily has three steps after the announcement of results. Once the results are declared, shortlisted candidates are required to perform an online registration for MAT Counselling

  • Aspirants with valid score in MAT 2017 will be shortlisted by the institutes for further selection process which includes, Group Discussion/Personal Interview and Written Ability Test.
  • Off lately, many top B-Schools have done away with the group discussions and depend on the performance of aspirants in PI and WAT.
  • Final selection of eligible candidates is subject to institute’s norms as each college has its own process of selecting aspirants for admission to management programs.

MAT 2017 for September session will commence on September 3, 2017 for those who wish to appear through offline mode. Online tests will begin from September 9, 2017 onwards. AIMA conducts MAT in four sessions in the time period of one year. 

MAT 2017 Selection Procedure- Group Discussion

After the announcement of MAT Results, candidates are called for further selection process. The first step after online registration for MAT Counselling at the preferred Institute is Group Discussion (GD) session. This stage of MAT 2017 Selection Procedure requires a candidate to be up-to-date with latest events and happening around the world.

Why is Group Discussion conducted?

The aim of conducting a group discussion session is simply to gauge the personality traits ingrained in candidates. However, many top B-Schools have done away with the group discussion sessions believing that it adds to the disadvantages of soft-spoken candidates.

  • This interaction is organized to spot the eligible applicant with effective communication skills, leadership skills, teamwork, etc.
  • It is more than an interactive session as it helps the panelists to ascertain whether or not a candidate is a good listener.
  • It is highly important to respect the opinion of other aspirants and contradict them in a polite manner. 
  • This round tests the ability of candidates to present their thoughts in a structured way and carry out fruitful discussions.

Topics covered in Group Discussion

The selected individual in this round is required to sit in a group of 4-5 candidates and carry out a discussion. A topic is generally given on the spot and pertains to current affairs.

  • Generally, GD topics are based on current affairs.
  • However, it is also possible that general topics may be given for discussion.
  • Discussion can be carried out on topics such as “Indian Television and where is it leading?” or “Should Capital Punishment be banned?” 
  • The duration of a group discussion session in MAT 2017 Selection Procedure is approximately 10 to 12 minutes. 


MAT 2017 Selection Procedure- Written Ability Test

Written Ability Test is the most important stage of the selection process. WAT is an essay writing test in which candidates are given a topic to write upon. The aim of this test is to judge thinking capabilities of the candidates. 

Why WAT?

Written Ability Test is organized to ascertain the qualities and capabilities possessed by the aspirants. One needs to be good at expressing the thoughts and opinions in written form as well. Just as Verbal abilities are gauged in Group Discussion, similarly, Written Efficiency is judged through WAT. One needs to present a good essay in the form of language, structure and organization. 

Key Points:

  • The test will be conducted for 20-30 minutes only.
  • Candidates will be asked to write an essay of 200-400 words. 
  • Topics related to MBA, current affairs or graduation specializations can be expected. 

MAT 2017 Selection Procedure- Personal Interview

Personal Interview session is conducted for candidates in the last leg of Selection Process of MAT. This round is conducted to assess the overall personality of the candidate. One of the main reasons for this round is to validate the eligibility of the candidate and to reassure that the candidate is positively motivated to pursue it.

  • The personal interview section is the last chance for candidates to display their worth, skills and talents.
  • Panelists take this as the ultimate gateway to spot on eligible candidates for further process of MAT Counselling. 
  • Candidates may be asked about their educational qualifications, strengths, etc.

A good subject knowledge, thought process, confidence, good communication skills is the aim of this selection procedure, to assess candidate’s potential for the managerial career. It is on the basis of total composite scores in all the steps of selection process, that the final merit list is announced for students having secured admission.
