MAT Exam: Language Comprehension Syllabus & Preparation

MAT is conducted in online as well as offline ways four times in a year i.e. February, May, September, and December. More than 3 lakh management aspirants appear for it annually.  

MAT 2017will consist of 5 sections- Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Language Comprehension, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, Mathematical Skills and Indian & Global Environment. MAT Language Comprehension section is considered as the easiest one and with proper guidelines and tips, one can master in MAT Language comprehension section.

  • It will include MCQ’s on grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension passages.
  • 1 mark will be awarded for every correct answer
  • The difficulty level of  Language Comprehension section ranges from easy to moderate.
  • A total number of questions in this section will be 40.

MAT 2017: September Paper Pattern

The duration of MAT exam is 2 and a half hour where a candidate has a choice of appearing for either paper-based or online computer-based test.

  • MAT Exam Pattern includes a total of 200 questions divided among 5 sections carrying 1 mark for each correct answer.
  • However, scores are awarded out of the composite score of 800 and a score above 450 or 500 is considered as a good score.
  • All its sections carry an equal weightage.
  • Your score in each of these sections will affect your overall performance.

MAT Language Comprehension Time Management Tips

During your preparatory days, focus mainly on practising passages, vocabulary and grammar. This section can be easy and tricky at the same time. Language Comprehension is one area where you have the maximum chances of securing good marks.

According to AIMA, one must devote maximum 30 minutes to this section, where a candidate is supposed to answer 40 MCQ’s in the Language Comprehension Section. So basically, a candidate has less than 1 minute for each question. Practice as much as you can, so that you save time on the actual exam. Devote at least an hour of your day to practice and exercise MAT Language Comprehension section. 

How to prepare for MAT Language Comprehension Section?

MAT 2017 Language Comprehension Section is can be broadly divided into- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension. MAT Reading Comprehension section will consist of unseen passages and candidates have to answer them correctly in a lesser time frame.   • All these grammar parts are somewhere connected. For example, use the ‘Be’ form verbs sparingly and carefully. Whenever you pick the error in Passive or reported speech sentences, most of the time they belong to the incorrect usage of ‘Be’ form verb. Try looking for this error in the sentences and you are good to go.
  • As far as the vocabulary section is concerned, be prepared to get a lot of synonyms and antonyms in the MAT 2017 Exam. So, just don’t mug them, but start using them in your daily life.
  • Although the pattern of the vocabulary words in the MAT Exam is generally moderate, most of them have their meanings in the word itself.
  • Try splitting the word in two, and maybe you just understand its actual meaning.
  • We suggest the candidates to stop mugging up and practice hard. This practice will also help you understand the pattern of the expected paper.

MAT Language Comprehension Preparation Tips for Reading Comprehension Section

There is no doubt about the fact the Reading Comprehension passages can fetch anyone better marks if attempted well. It is a good source to score higher marks as each passage is followed by multiple questions. If there are 4 such passages followed by 4 questions each, you can score not less than 16 raw marks and about 64 marks out of a composite score of 800.
Following are the important preparation tips:

  • Take help from newspapers, blogs, editorials, magazines etc. as they are rich sources of vocabulary.
  • Try to practice as many passages as possible each day.
  • Sometimes passages contain synonyms/ antonyms too, so try to learn them online on a daily basis.

The level of  MAT Exam is moderate in comparison with the other competitive exams. So, there are more chances of people to crack it.
