CAT 2016 Results

CAT Percentile and Shortlisting Procedure

Percentile indicates the relative position of the candidate in CAT. The exam is held in two different slots, so the score obtained is scaled to adjust for the sessions, location, and scale difference.

Once the results are declared, the candidates will receive their achieved percentile through SMS sent to the mobile number registered by candidate during the application procedure. Once candidates receive their percentile through SMS, they can view and download their score card on IIM CAT’s official website. Candidates will have to login with the ID and password that they set during the application procedure. The result will be presented in normalized form, and will also show the achieved percentile.

The main criteria for selection is the percentile achieved by the candidate in the CAT exam, although many other criteria are taken into account, like academic record, work experience, etc. Each IIM issues separate selection criteria and minimum cutoff. It is indicated as the minimum percentile required to be selected for IIM and other B-Schools.

CAT 2016 Scorecard

The scorecard that will be available to candidates after the declaration of result will contain the following:

  • Candidate’s information like name, gender, date of birth, contact details, category, etc.
  • Registration number and User ID
  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) – Scaled Score, Percentile
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) – Scaled Score, Percentile
  • Quantitative Ability (QA) – Scaled Score, Percentile
  • Overall Scaled Score
  • Overall Percentile

The following details of the score card are based on the score card that was released for CAT 2015 result. It is expected that there might be slight changes in this year’s score card.

Normalization of CAT 2016 Scores

The CAT exam will be held in two different slots. In order to maintain fairness and equality in comparison of performances of the candidates across different sessions, the scores are a subject to normalization.

  • Normalization process to be implemented shall adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms. After normalization across different forms the scores shall be further normalized across different sections and the scaled scores obtained by this process shall be converted into percentiles for purposes of shortlisting.
  • For purposes of reporting, Scaled Scores for each section (Section I: Quantitative Ability, Section II: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and Section III: Verbal Ability) and Total along with the Percentiles shall be published.
  • The process of Normalization is an established practice for comparing candidate scores across multiple Forms and is similar to those being adopted in other large educational selection tests conducted in India such as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). For normalization across sections we shall use a sort of percentile equivalence.

After the Declaration of CAT 2016 Result

Once the result is declared and the candidates have seen their percentile and score card, candidates need not apply to IIMs separately in order to get shortlisted, but other B-Schools invite MBA/ PGDM/ Management programs applications. Candidates are advised to apply for their preferred B-Schools.

To verify the eligibility, the candidates will have to present the following documents when appearing for the interview:

  • Mark sheet and degree certificate
  • Documents for final year graduation candidates
  • Reservation and category related documents
