Change in IIM Lucknow Admission Criteria, more weightage to marks in Class XII, Bachelor's Degree

Last Updated - September 29, 2016

In a recent announcement made by the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, the selected candidates who have qualified the Common Admission TestCAT 2016, will have a bonus to look forward to.

The IIM Lucknow is the fourth in the prestigious IIM family of management schools to be established in India after IIM Calcutta, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangaloreand only the fortunate ones make a place in it. The institute undertakes a diverse range of academic activities aimed at creation, dissemination and application of management knowledge and practice.

Its change in the weightage to the different CAT Eligibility Criteria, is talked about everywhere. The article gives you all the necessary details.

Weightage of class XII and graduation marks ups

According to the latest notification by the IIM Lucknow, all candidates qualifying the CAT Exam will be given more points i.e. 5 each, for their class XII and graduation marks. This was 2 and 3 marks respectively during the earlier years. As mentioned on IIML’s official website, the admission policy for the academic year 2015-2017 informs all the aspiring candidates about this new change. Its details out that the maximum marks a candidate can score in its Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) is 5 marks for its class XII score, which was 2 as till last year.

Similarly, a candidate will be awarded 5 marks for his Bachelor’s degree, which was 3 marks as till last year. Of course, these will be awarded only if the candidate holds a sound academic performance during his school and graduation years. These scores, reads the admission document, will be normalized according to a formula devised by IIML.

Weightage of CAT Score reduced

Where the prestigious IIM Lucknow ups the weightage of a candidate’s class XII and graduation marks during the admission process, the implications are seen on the weightage of CAT Score too. The points allotted to the CAT score have been reduced. Till last year, 38 points were assigned to the CAT score for admissions to PGPat IIM L. These points have now been reduced to 30 from this year. According to a professor at the IIML, increase in the academic weightage and reduction in the CAT score indicates that the institute is looking for consistent performers.

CAT 2016 aspirants must make sure that they score a minimum 85 sectional percentile and minimum 90 overall percentile in their CAT Exam, to qualify for shortlisting at IIM Lucknow. the CAT exam is scheduled to be held on December 4, 2016 in 2 sessions. In case greater number of CAT takers score more than the number expected, the minimum CAT score requirement may go up in shortlisting the candidates. Candidates who do not meet the minimum requirement after the CAT Result is announced, will not be shortlisted.

For a better understanding, the below table describes the first stage of shortlisting. The Weightage Criteria is on a scale of 100.

Scaled CAT score606060
Class XII marks101010
Graduation marks101010
Work Experience10010
Diversity factor (DFa): Academic Disciplines (AD)520*5
Diversity factor (DFb): Gender55*5

*Maximum marks for diversity factor cannot exceed 20 (for PGP-ABM Program only)

Other Key Moves

In addition, the new change also emphasizes on the work experience of the candidates. While applying for the PGP, candidates who possess more than six months of experience will get 5 points as against 2 they got last year. This will carry a maximum weightage of 10% while the IIML will be shortlisting the candidates. Last year, the weightage given to work exec was merely 4%, with 2 out of 50 points to it. Candidates may please note that Internships, Articleships and Apprenticeships etc. will not be counted.

Another major change has been made to the total cut-off percentile for shortlisting SC/ST candidates for the Written Ability Test (WAT) and the Personal Interview (PI) stage. Now, the total CAT Cutoff percentile for candidates applying through SC quota is 70 which was 75 for 2016-18 batch. For the ST candidates, the cut-off percentile has been decreased from 70 for academic year 2016-18 to 65 in academic year 2017-19.

As far as the sectional cut-offs for three sections (quantitative ability, data interpretation and logical reasoning, verbal ability and reading comprehension) is concerned, it remains same for the SC/ST candidates just as the last year. This new change will bring in a bigger pool of students coming from the SC/ST categories, says an IIML professor. He also adds that if this year, 70 is the cutoff percentile for the SC candidates, IIM Lucknow will have the top 30% students to choose from while preparing the merit list. When the cut-off percentile was 75, IIML could only select the top 25% candidates for preparing the merit list. This same applies to the ST candidates.

The below table describes the final selection round. A candidate’s final score for selection in PGP/PGP-ABM/PGP-SM programme for the batch 2017–19 will be calculated on the basis of the assigned weights as given below-

ComponentWeight for PGP & PGP-SM programmeWeight for PGP-ABM programme
CAT score3035
Academic performance (class XII+graduation)5+55+5
Diversity factor55
Work experience5NA
Writing Ability Test (WAT)1010
Personal Interview (PI)4040

NOTE: Candidates have to pass the PI round in order to get included in the final merit list. The minimum requirement to pass the PI round is 12 out of 40 marks.

We hope this change works for the benefit of both- the candidates and the institute. The IIML is now at an advantage with a choice of almost 30% candidates to shortlist for the merit list. We believe the candidates will be a bit relaxed as far as their CAT Score is concerned, as more weightage is being given to class XII and graduation marks.
