CAT 2017 Preparation Tips

Ques. What is Your Five Point Rule to Excel CAT 2017?

Ans. The only rules I had set up for myself and I strongly recommend are,

  • Practice
  • Discipline
  • Revision
  • Take care of health

Ques. What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put to improve your weak areas?

Ans. I faced difficulty, particularly in the Quantitative Ability section. The major problem I feel. was my speed. I could solve the questions but time managed to beat me in the initial stages. However, I practiced intensively and got hold of the problem without compromising on the accuracy.

Also, I had to work upon by Reading and Comprehensive skills to perfect this section. I managed to score decently after I made reading a daily habit and paid equal heed to it along with other sections.

Ques. Review the Coaching Institutes and What was their role in your story?

Ans. I joined Career Launcher, Indore. The coaching institute was good. I learned many important tips, and strategies were shared with us. Since I joined in the crash course, our focus remained at solving questions using tricks with speed and accuracy.

I was specifically trained to complete the exam within stipulated time. Time management is one of the most important factors to successfully attempt the paper. I attended mock GDPIs as well.

Ques. How many GDPI did you take part in?

Ans. I had attended 7 GDPIs.

Ques. How did you manage CAT preparation schedule along graduation studies/working hours?

Ans. I made a study schedule for two months before CAT. I joined a crash course and apart from attending the classes, I generally got about 2-3 hours to study. I was made to solve previous year questions. At first, I focused on giving the correct answer, irrespective of time taken to solve, as I wanted to build the concept. Then after a couple of weeks, I started timing myself. I generally did Quant and LR/Di during weekdays and Comprehension during Saturday. Sundays, I just revised all of it. Also, everyday during the week, my aim was to learn 5 new words and revise them during the weekend.

Ques. What mock paper did you take?

Ans. I took the papers that our institutes prepared for us. Apart from it, I solved online sample papers available at testfunda.com and tcyonline.com.

Ques. List the name of books you followed for Data Interpretation

Ans. Career Launcher Study Material. Apart from it, you can go through the following books:

  • Data Interpretation for CAT by Arun Sharma
  • Pearson Guide to Data Interpretation and Quantitative Aptitude by Nishit Sinha

Ques. List the Name of Books You Followed for Quantitative Aptitude

Ans. Try solving questions from previous year question papers, apart from it, follow the books given below for better preparation:

  • Quantum CAT by Sarvesh Verma
  • Quantitative Aptitude for CAT by Arun Sharma

Ques. What was your strategy for the Verbal Ability section

Ans. I practiced two comprehensions each week and the key was time management. Do not take this section lightly. It is important to keep a strong hold at your vocabulary and be consistent with time, speed and accuracy. This does not apply to Verbal Ability section alone, but to the entire CAT exam.

Ques. List the name of books you followed for vocabulary and grammar. Discuss your strategy for this section.

Ans. I based my preparation for this section on Career Launcher Study Material. I followed Pearson Guide to Verbal Ability in CAT by Nishit K Sinha, How to Prepare for Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension in CAT by Meenakshi Upadhyay and Arun Sinha.

I practiced 5 new words every day during the week and revised them over the weekend. Also, I used the words in one sentence each. I also tried to write a short paragraph on the weekend, using all the words that I learnt, so that I would remember the meaning of each.

Ques. What Should be the strategy for someone who is starting just two months before the exam?

Ans. I started two months before the exam too. So be disciplined and it will do the trick.

Ques. How Would you rate the following preparation strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Ques. What will be Your Prescription for Students in the Last Phase of their Preparation for CAT 2016

Ans. Be calm. Focus more on revision now, than learning new concepts.

Ques. How was the interview? Share some of the questions

Ans. The interviews were all different. So there is no specific pattern. One interview was stress-interview where two panelists were just bombarding me with questions without giving much time to think. The key there was to keep my cool, and not be distracted. In another interview, I was mostly asked logical reasoning based questions. In some interview, I was given a 6-sigma problem to solve, which was a technical question. In yet another interview, I was asked more about recent socio-political issues.

I think the general idea would be to keep one's cool and not be overpowered by any question. When in doubt, ask. It is also important to stand by your answers but not show a rigid attitude. Be open to the interviewer's suggestions and add your viewpoint. If you don't know an answer even after trying, tell them the same. Don't try to fool them by showing that you are really trying hard, as mostly then can see through it
