NEET Eligibility Criteria 2018

National Eligibility Entrance Test, NEET, is a single tier exam for students aspiring to pursue MBBS or BDS. Applicants must ensure that they fulfill the eligibility criteria before proceeding to fill the application form. Check How to fill Application form for NEET

If at any stage they’re found to be ineligible, their application will be rejected immediately. Here are the factors on which a candidate’s eligibility for the exam will be judged.

Attempts

NEET replaced AIPMT in 2016 as the entrance exam for admission into MBBS/BDS courses.  Therefore, NEET 2017 was counted as the first attempt for all candidates, irrespective of whether they had taken the exam prior to 2017 or not. Each candidate has a total of 3 attempts to appear for the exam. The entrance exam is conducted on an annual basis. NEET exam date for the next academic session is May 10, 2018.


Age limit for NEET 2018

Candidates must adhere to the age limit specified by CBSE before proceeding to fill the application form for NEET. In 2016, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, fixed an upper age limit for NEET aspirants with a relaxation of 5 years for reserved categories.

Minimum Age Limit- The candidate should be 17 years of age by December 31, 2018.

Maximum Age Limit - The maximum age limit for general category candidates is 25 years and for reserved categories, it is 30 years.


Nationality 

The following persons are eligible to appear for 2018 NEET.

  • Indian Nationals
  • Non Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs)
  • Persons of Indian Orgin (PIOs)
  • Foreign Nationals

Educational Qualification

The exam authorities have decided on a set of minimum educational qualifications that NEET aspirants must possess. Class XII is the basic qualifying exam, but the qualifying marks differ according to the candidates’ category. The following persons are eligible to give the exam:

  • Students who have passed the class XII qualifying exam.
  • Students who are appearing for the class XII qualifying exam.
  • Candidates must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology as their subjects in Class XII.
  • General Category- 50% marks in qualifying exam.
  • OBC/SC/ST Category- 40% marks in qualifying exam.
  • General- Physically Handicapped Category- 45% marks in qualifying exam.
  • OBC/SC/ST- Physically Handicapped Category- 40% marks in qualifying exam.

Eligibility for 15% All India Quota Seats for NEET 2018

15% of the total seats are segregated as All India Quota (AIQ) seats. To take admission via AIQ, candidates need to take part in online counselling for NEET conducted by MCC. After 2 rounds of counselling, if any seats remain vacant under AIQ, they will be converted into State Quota seats.  The following persons are eligible for a seat under All India Quota:

Note: Candidates from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and J&K are not eligible for 15% All India Quota Seats.

Reservation under 15% All India Quota

The All India Quota has a certain number of seats reserved for students from different categories. Those belonging to OBC- Creamy Layer do not have any reservation under this quota.

  • SC Candidates- 15%
  • ST Candidates- 7.5%
  • OBC Candidates (Non-Creamy layer)- 27%
  • : Candidates from creamy layer must mention their category as Unreserved.
  • Physically Handicapped Candidates- 3%

NEET Eligibility 2018 for 85% State Quota seats

The states participating in NEET will fill 85% of their MBBS/BDS seats through state counselling. The remaining 15% seats will be filled through All India centralized counselling. The eligibility criteria for admission through state quota seats is:

  • Candidates must have completed/appeared in 10th and 12th class exam from the state.
  • Candidates should have a valid address proof of the state
  • Candidates should possess valid domicile of the state.

The following persons can apply for admission under the state quota:

  • Indian Nationals
  • Non Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCIs)
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs)
  • Foreign Nationals (confirm with the concerned institute/state)

Admission through these seats will be subject to reservation policy and eligibility criteria prevalent in the State or Union Territory. For State counselling, candidates must contact the relevant state counselling authority for details.

Note: Admission to Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune will be subject to norms specified by the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services, Ministry of Defence and Government of India. Those who have applied for NEET and seek admission in AFMC must apply on their official website as well. Candidates can contact AFMC for further assistance and details of NEET rules and regulations pertaining to the institution.

Ques. I belong to the unreserved category. What is the minimum qualification required for me to apply for the exam?

Ans. Higher secondary (12 th ) or equivalent with the Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English subjects, and 50% marks in the qualifying exam.

Ques. What is the upper age limit?

Ans. The upper age of candidates applying for NEET should not exceed 25 years on the examination date (5 years’ relaxation for the SC/ST/OBC candidates).

Ques. How many times can I attempt for the exam?

Ans. The maximum number of allowed attempts for all candidates to appear in NEET is limited to 3 (three).

Ques. I am 16 years old and appearing in class 12 th in 2018. Am I eligible to appear for the exam?

Ans. No, the minimum age limit for appearing in NEET is 17 years.

Ques. What is the eligibility of qualifying marks in class 12 th for candidates appearing in NEET?

Ans. The eligibility of qualifying marks in class 12 th for candidates appearing in NEET is mentioned below:

  • Unreserved - 50%
  • SC, ST and OBC - 40%
  • PWD - 45%

Ques. I belong to the OBC category and have passed 12 th with the Physics, Chemistry and Biology with 46% marks. Am I eligible for appearing in NEET 2018?

Ans. Yes.

Ques. I am 26 years old and belong to the unreserved category. Am I eligible for appearing in NEET 2018?

Ans. No.

Ques. Who all can avail 15% All India Quota seats?

Ans. The following residents can avail the 15% All India Quota seats in NEET:

  • Indian Nationals
  • Non Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Oversees Citizen of India (OCIs)
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs)
  • Foreign Nationals

Ques. I am opting Oriya as the question paper medium. Am I then eligible for 15% All India Quota?

Ans. You are eligible for All India Quota and other quotas (per the required norms) irrespective of the medium in which examination is attempted.

Ques. I have appeared in NEET three times before. Will I be able to appear in NEET 2018?

Ans. NEET 2017 was counted as the first attempt for all candidates. so as long as you are under the upper age limit, you can appear for NEET 2018.

Ques. Are there some MBBS or BDS seats for which admission can be offered without appearing in NEET?

Ans. No, the admissions to all (100%) MBBS and BDS seats will be done through NEET only.

Ques. Could I seek admission to an AIIMS institution through NEET?

Ans. No, AIIMS does not use NEET score for offering admissions to their branches. Candidates have to appear for a separate exam to secure an admission in AIIMS.

Ques. I have passed 12 th class exams without Biology. However, the Biotechnology subject was in my curriculum. Am I eligible for appearing in the exam?

Ans. Yes.

Ques. I have passed 12 th class exams with the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects, excluding Biology and Biotechnology. Am I eligible for appearing in the exam?

Ans. No, either Biology or Biotechnology is mandatory in class 12 th .

Ques. I have a gap of 1 year in my academics. Can I appear for the exam?

Ans. Yes; as long as you qualify the remaining eligibility norms.

What is 15% all India quota? why not applicable in telangana,andhra Pradesh

Hi Hemalatha, Students from the States of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and J & K are NOT ELIGIBLE for 15% all India quota seats as these States had opted out of All India Scheme since its initiation. If they claim eligibility, they must submit online Self Declaration which will be generated and printed automatically along with confirmation page for the record and to present during counseling.
