MAT 2017 ROHIT RANJAN
NATIONAL LEVEL ONLINE/OFFLINE TEST
We interviewed Rohit Ranjan who appeared in MAT 2012 and secured a whopping 698 marks. During the interview, he told us about his overall experience during the selection process, preparation strategies and his success mantra. He also shared with us the books he referred during the preparation period.
Here is the questionnaire which we had with him.
Ques. How was your experience in the Interview?
Ans. It was a normal PI consisting of two panels, where majority questions asked were related to HR. I was asked to introduce myself (introduction included last career details or job profile) which was followed by a topic round wherein I was asked to speak on any topic of my choice. The next was a skill round where my accent and communication was being checked. Overall, it was a good experience, apart from the technical questions asked.

Ans. On the basis of my MAT Score, I got a call from:
Apart from hundreds of others, I still remember I used to get around 30-40 calls daily and around 300-400 brochures being delivered to my address.
Ans. I joined a 3 months’ crash course in IMS. Apart from a good mentorship, what helped me was the booklets for preparation.
Ans. I was selected for the job and my joining date was in March 2013. I had ample time for my preparations. I scheduled my CAT for November 10, 2012 (being a Sunday) as I needed a good amount of time for my preparations and scheduled my MAT Exam on Dec 2. This was my strategy to manage time and prepare better.

Ans. Data Interpretation section, in the beginning, was really tough for me. My mock test scores were very poor specifically in DI. So, I took a module on DI, sat in the library the entire day and finished all 10 exercises at once. Gradually I increased my chapters and eventually found myself mastering it.
Ans. The duration of MAT is 2.5 hours and is divided into 5 sections. The questions are objective type and multiple choice. So work accordingly.
Few tips I would like to share here:
1. Know your strengths and weakness: For any test knowing your weakness and strengths is a must so that your weakness can be converted into strengths
2. Read newspaper regularly: Without reading a newspaper daily (the editorial and not the page 3) one cannot clear any entrance exam. Rather than knowledge on current affairs, vocabulary and grammar is enhanced
3. Take mock tests: It will cover two aspects, speed and accuracy
4. Practice: Practice makes a man perfect holds true here
5. Sleep well and eat good: Also give time to something you like. Keep your mind calm
Ans. TIME booklets and bullseye. Open an account which is free and stay in touch with peers through this web portal.
Ans. Bullseye for problems and questions, pagalguy and mbauniverse for any updates or amendments. Sample papers one can get it from the coaching institutes itself at a less cost rather than paying online.
Ans. I am sorry I don't exactly remember the books that I followed for this section but this was my favorite of all. I would like to share something.
The only way to deal with language comprehension section is reading English newspapers, quality magazines and novels on daily basis. Watching news on television can also add a plus point in your preparation.
Try to solve as many online MAT sample papers you can manage. Underline the words you are not able to understand, utilize a dictionary to find their meaning, synonyms and antonyms. These exercises help you in improving your vocabulary as well as grammar."
Ans. At the time of exam, read all the questions carefully. Make sure why a given option should be correct or incorrect. Read properly all the choices before answering the question.
I remember this section consists of easy, medium and difficult level questions. First, try to solve those questions where you are sure about the answer. Do not waste your time in cross-checking those answers again and again. Try to save time for difficult questions as these require more time and concentration.
Time management plays a very important role in this section

Ans. Always try to use those facts and figures that are given in the questions. Never assume any such information, which is not provided. One of the good strategies in practicing data analysis and sufficiency questions is presenting it in form of charts or pictures.
Ans. One mistake that I used to do was use of calculators which is a big NO. Never put a habit of using calculators as this may decrease your speed in solving questions. Instead, always set a timer in solving such questions, which helps in time-saving and speed-building. To memorize all the formulae, you should write them down on a piece of paper and stick it on a wall in your room and revise it regularly. Sometimes when you are stuck with a question, try to answer it from the given options and work reverse to see if it’s working or not. Spending 3 to 4 hours every day on quant section is a must. Take feedback from people who have already taken MAT in May and September, read MAT management aptitude test updates on educational blogs and forums, which are quite helpful. Always avoid making random guesses.
Books followed were McGraw hill mathematics rewarded.
Ans. This section essentially tests the IQ. The questions are generally asked from the current happenings so you need to keep yourself updated with current general knowledge books, magazines etc. Read newspapers and watch news channels for latest news. News should be covered from all aspects such as politics, sports, entertainment, awards etc. Awareness is the only key to ace this section in MAT Exam. And also, sorry to say this cannot be done in a quick time. You need to be of a higher IQ by default.
Ans. Obviously, the key point here is that put your time to studying and not just dawdling around. Work hard and practice. Rather than working hard practice smart. Be calm and keep your cool. This is not the end of the world. All the best people.
