Sectional Analysis of IIFT 2014 Exam

Since, there were around 3-4 sets of question paper, the sequence of questions in the paper is liable to change. The pattern of questions was changing with every set. In general, following pattern was observed among all the sections:

1.  Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability

The number of questions in Data Interpretation section was 15. There were total 4 sets of questions in this section. The calculations were relatively tough. The candidate who attempted only 2 sets i.e., answered around 6-8 questions correctly was able to clear the cut off. The selection of questions was very crucial. The calculations were tricky also.

The Quantitative Aptitude section had 20 questions. The questions were of average difficulty level. Some of the questions were lengthy while others were comparatively easy but to figure out the candidate has to go through all the questions. The QA section was easier than DI section. The candidate who attempted 6-7 DI questions and 9-12 QA questions could score 80% marks easily, provided that the attempts were correct.

However, some questions had incomplete data and ambiguous details which made them slightly confusing for the candidates.

2. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

The VR and RC section had 20 and 17 questions respectively. The questions carried 1 marks and 0.75 marks respectively. The loss of marks was 1/3rd as the trend has been there.

The VR section was easy to work with except a few questions on grammar.  There were 10 questions on General English. There were around 6 questions on grammar. Also, questions were asked on idioms and PFQ.

There was a question in grammar section where all the options given were incorrect. Since, the candidate can mark only a correct answer from the available options, it is advised in such circumstances not to mark any answer. In such cases, the candidate is awarded marks for not attempting. A wrong attempt can result in negative marking.

The Reading Comprehension section had really long passages. The passages were almost 3 pages long. However, the passages were easy and questions were also direct. The time was required just to read the passage. Some questions were indirect but still one could attempt these with a little bit of effort. A good attempt for the section was 7-8 for RC section and 10-12 for VA section.

3. Logical Reasoning Section

The LR section had mixed type of questions. The section was lengthy and the difficulty level was quite high. The questions came on puzzles, input/output and other related areas. The cut off for the section was relatively low as a result. The selection of question was important. A smart candidate could easily attempt 9-11 questions by leaving all the difficult sets.

4. General Awareness

The General Awareness section had more questions on current affairs as compared to the static GK questions. The cut off was relatively high as the GK section was easy. The candidate who habitually reads the papers and magazines regularly could easily score good marks in this section. An attempt of 8-10 questions will help in clearing the sectional cut off.
