IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an examination that is taken to evaluate the English language skills of the test taker. The IELTS Exam is jointly conducted by Cambridge ESOL, the British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia.

IELTS Score is used for three purposes– for study, for work or for migration. The IELTS Exam is conducted to assess the four skills related to the English language –IELTS Listening, IELTS Writing, IELTS Reading, and IELTS Speaking. The first step to take IELTS is selecting the IELTS Exam Date and center. This can be done by completing the steps of IELTS Registration, available in both online and offline modes.

Who conducts IELTS

IELTS is jointly managed by three bodies- Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), IELTS IDP (International Development Program):IELTS Australia, British Council.

Why is IELTS Test Taken?

The IELTS is basically an English language assessment examination. Countries Accepting IELTS Score

IELTS Exam Dates

IELTS is available throughout the year. It is the discretion of the candidates to choose when and where to take the IELTS Exam. The aspirants of IELTS have the provision of choosing the IELTS Exam Dates and centers from three different websites detailed below:

There are several dates available for test taking all throughout the year. There are 42 locations all over India where the British Council offers IELTS exam.

Steps to be followed for this purpose through each website are provided below.

  • Provide the test date, test city and version of exam in the left-hand box and click on “Submit”.
  • Select the appropriate date and venue.

  • You will be redirected to the page where you have to choose the IELTS Exam Date and centers.

IELTS Registration

Before proceeding for IELTS Registration, the candidates must check the availability of theIELTS Exam Dates and centers. If any IELTS Exam date is not available or fully booked, it will not be shown in the online registration system.

Both the online and offline modes are available for IELTS Registration. The candidates can opt for any of the modes according to their convenience. However, the most easily accessible and convenient way will be to complete the IELTS Registration via the online mode.

The steps for each method are described below:

IELTS Registration-Offline mode

  1. Visit the link – to download the application form.
  2. Take a print out of the form and fill all the details carefully.
  3. Choose a test date online by visiting the official website.
  4. Make fee payment in either cash or by demand draft.
  5. Send the form to the nearest test centre along with the proof of payment of application fee.

In person:

  • Complete the online form online or a paper application with the assistance from the staff.

IELTS Registration-Online mode

  • Fill out the online application form correctly.
  • Make fee payment using a credit / debit card.
  • In case the fee is paid via an offline option, that is, in cash or by a DD, the candidate will be required to send a copy of the IELTS Test application acknowledgement along with proof of fee payment to the British Council office.

Particulars to fill during IELTS Registration

There are a lot of details that the candidate will have to provide while filling out the IELTS application form. Following are the fields mentioned in the form:

So, in case the applicant is a student, he should fill 7 as the level and since the sector is education, he should choose 08 as the sector.

Similarly, for the field regarding reason to be taking the exam, there are specified codes that the candidate will have to choose from. These are given below:

Reason for Taking IELTS

  • For higher education extended course(three months or more): 1
  • For higher education short course(three months or less): 2
  • For other education purposes: 3
  • For registration as a doctor: 4
  • For immigration: 5
  • For employment: 6
  • For professional registration (NOT medical): 7
  • For personal reasons: 8
  • For registration as a nurse (including CGFNS): 9
  • For registration as a dentist: 10
  • Other: 0

If the applicant is taking the IELTS exam in order for employment purposes, he must fill 6 as the required detail.

Enclosures to be sent with the IELTS form

In case of offline IELTS Registration, the documents to be sent with the application form vary according to the mode of application and mode of fee payment. The details can be found below:

  1. In case of online application and fee payment using a Credit or Debit card, there are
  • No documents required.
  1. In case of online application and fee payment by Cash or Demand Draft, the following documents must be sent with the application form:
  • A copy of the IELTS Test application acknowledgement (to be received after registering online).
  • Proof of fee payment made (either the demand draft or the ‘British Council copy’ of the ICICI payment slip).
  1. In case of offline application and fee payment by Cash or Demand Draft, the following documents must be sent with the application form:
  • The completed IELTS application form.
  • Proof of fee payment made (either the demand draft or the ‘British Council copy’ of the ICICI payment slip).

IELTS Exam Fee and Mode of Payment

The amount that needs to be paid as the IELTS Exam Fee is INR 11,100 up until the 30th of September 2018. After 1st October 2018, the fee will be increased to INR 11,300. There are two ways to Register for IELTS – online and offline - and hence two ways to make the fee payment. To pay the IELTS Exam Fee online, the applicant can choose either a credit card or a debit card. Visa, Visa electron and Master Card are the acceptable ones.

If the applicant has opted for offline IELTS Registration process, he will need to pay the fee using the offline mode. This can be done by cash or a demand draft. If making cash payment, candidate should visit an ICICI bank branch and use the ICICI payment slip. To pay using a demand draft, the applicant must draw it in the favor of the British Council and make it payable at New Delhi.

Fee Payment options

The IELTS registration feecan be paid in two ways and the candidate is free to opt for the payment method that he finds convenient. The methods are discussed below:

  1. Online Mode

Either a credit card or a debit card can be used for this purpose. Visa, Visa electron and Master Card are the ones that are recognized.

  1. Offline Mode

The fee can alternatively be paid offline either by cash or by a Demand Draft. For the purpose of cash payment, the applicant must visit an ICICI bank branch and use the ICICI payment slip. If paying by the option of DD, it must be drawn in the favor of “British Council” and be payable at New Delhi.

Cancelling IELTS and Requesting a Transfer

If the candidate wishes to cancel his scheduled IELTS Exam, there is the provision of cancelling the test. However, they must keep in mind that the full ILETS Exam Fee will be charged, if this is done after five weeks of the test date. Any form received after this deadline will be accepted but the entire IELTS Exam Fee will be retained and no refund can be made. Besides, A cancellation fee will be charged as well when processing the cancellation request.

Note: Transfer of application fee will be granted only if the applicant manages to produce appropriate medical evidence, within five days of the IELTS Exam Date.

How to cancel or postpone IELTS Exam Date

In order to apply for cancellation and postponement of test date, the candidate must fil out the “Request for Postponement or Cancellation” form. After filling out the form, the candidate will need to send it by post or courier to the following address:

Cancellation of IELTS Exam Date 

The cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund of the candidate’s IELTS Exam Fee. It may take about 2 weeks' time to process the refund after the cancellation request has been made. In case of refund for an online payment, the refund amount will be made to the card from which the original payment was received.

The candidate must attach the original payment receipt of test fee along with the form. The cancellation fee varies as given below:

  • INR 2750 for IELTS tests till 31 September 2018
  • INR 2825 for IELTS test dates after 1 October 2018
  • INR 4650 for IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration
  • INR 3480 for IELTS Life Skills A1 or IELTS Life Skills B1

Postponement of IELTS Exam Date

If the candidate wishes to postpone his IELTS test date to a later time, he will be required to pay a postponement fee. This must be done through a DD. The Demand Draft must be drawn in favor of 'British Council', payable at New Delhi, and sent along with the postponement application form.

The candidate must attach a copy of the payment receipt of test fee along with the form. The postponement fee differs as given below:

  • INR 2750 for IELTS tests till 31 September 2018
  • INR 2825 for IELTS test dates after 1 October 2018
  • INR 4650 for IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration
  • INR 3480 for IELTS Life Skills A1 or IELTS Life Skills B1


IELTS Score is declared 13 calendar days after the candidate sits / appears for the examination. Candidate can access the IELTS Score online as well as offline. An official IELTS Test Report Form is made available tentatively after the aforementioned duration. In case, a candidate applies for Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), he / she can earn two copies of the Test Report Form.

The test takers are given the provision to select upto 5 universities/organizations/institutes to whom they wish to send their official IELTS Test Report Form. The expenses for this is covered under the IELTS Exam Fee. If any additional test report is ordered, the test taker will be charged withh additional fees.

Information required to access IELTS Scores

To access IELTS Scores, candidate must keep following information in hand:

  • Candidate’s Identification document number.
  • IELTS Exam candidate number provided during examination at the test center.
  • Date of IELTS exam.
  • Date of birth.

Online mode

The Test takers can avail the IELTS Scores in the official British Council IELTS website as well as in the IELTS IDP website.

To get a preview of IELTS Score online, candidate must follow these steps:

  1. Candidate must first click on any of the baove mentioned two links to get an access to the result portal.
  2. After clicking on the links provided, candidate will have to fill in following particulars:
  • Firstly, enter identification document number.
  • Candidate will be provided with candidate number during the examination which shall be kept safely as it will be required to fill in the second entry.
  • Following candidate number, candidate must enter date of IELTS exam and lastly fill in his / her date of birth.

Offline mode

To get IELTS Scores offline candidate must wait for the concerned IELTS exam center to post the Test Result Form after 13 days of the commencement of the examination. It is possible that candidate's result might get delayed due to strict quality control procedures. There will be an email confirmation being sent to the candidate in such case scenario.

Candidates can also have access to the score of IELTS exam through SMS service. Candidate will be required to send the SMS on 9289892898 as follows:

Another way to get IELTS Scores is by going at the test center and getting it in person. The procedure however depends on the arrangement at the test center.

IELTS Test Report Form

IELTS Test Report Form or TRF is the scorecard that is obtained by candidate who appears for IELTS Exam. It will be sent via post or candidate can have a preview of it online. There will only be one copy of the Test Result Form or TRF that will be provided to the candidate. For those who have applied for CIC i.e. Citizenship and Immigration Canada, two copies of TRF / Test Result Form can be provided.

Candidate will be asked to nominate up to five universities or employers or organizations to which candidate's copy of Test Result Form will be sent on the insistence of candidate himself / herself. Candidate can obtain additional copies of his / her Test Result Form by paying administration fee.

Additional Test Report Form

If a candidate does not request for Additional Test Result Form in the original application form, he / she will have to fill a separate form for the same. Candidates who wish to obtain Additional Test Report Form will have to pay INR 250 per copy to send it via airmail or INR 1250 per copy to send it via courier to International Destinations.

Candidate must attach a photocopy of IELTS test result and passport to the application form. Since Test Result Form will be sent directly to the recipient, therefore candidate must provide institution's address and fill in the Application form for Additional Test Result Form and send it to

Additional Test Result Form can be obtained by candidate after 14 working days after the receipt of documents on the given address. IELTS exam scorecard or Test Result Form is usually acceptable within two years' period of time.

IELTS Score Enquiry

If a candidate is unsure about the marking of the IELTS exam, he / she can apply for Enquiry to get the test re-marked. Although it is rarely any possibility that the score / Test Result Form is mistaken in marking but if it happens, candidate must apply for re-marking within six weeks of the test date. In case candidate wants to get a certain section or sections corrected, he / she can make the choice while applying for IELTS Score Enquiry.

Candidate shall pay INR 6500 as a fee for the Enquiry or Result service. If the overall score of the candidate changes due to re-marking, the fee paid will be refunded duly. Candidate must know that the re-marking can take up to ten weeks to complete. Candidate will receive an EOR letter stating final result after trained clerical markers and senior examiners re-mark the results.

Candidate must first fill in the Application Form for Enquiry on IELTS Scores. Then the form must be sent along with Original Test Result Form, photocopy of cancelled cheque (to process refund, if any), Demand Draft for payment and photocopy of first and last page of his / her passport to the following address:
