IBPS Syllabus

IBPS RRB Exam Pattern is released by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). For the academic session 2017-18, the pattern is expected to undergo no changes i.e. it will remain similar to that of IBPS RRB 2016 Pattern. Knowing about the pattern will help a candidate to prepare for IBPS RRB exam in a better way. The following article will enlighten a candidate with the marking scheme, paper pattern, number of questions, total marks etc that will be followed in IBPS RRB 2017. 

Listed below are some quick facts relating to IBPS RRB:

  • IBPS RRB is conducted to recruit aspirant in various Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) across India.
  • The exam is conducted for 2 Groups namely Group A (Scale I, Scale II, Scale III) and Group B (Office Assistant). 
  • IBPS RRB 2017 Exam Pattern differs for Scale I, II, III and Office Assistant posts.
  • The exams (Prelims/ Mains/ Single Examination) will be conducted in online mode i.e. CBT (Computer Based Test) 
  • All the exams will be of Objective type i.e. they will Multiple Choice Questions.
  • Candidates will have an option to answer the questions in Hindi or English as per their preference.
  • There is a provision of negative marking for the wrong marked answers.

IBPS, conducting body of RRB exam has released the official dates for the exam. Candidates can go through the following table to know about the same:

IBPS RRB Exam Pattern –  Group A (Scale I)

Candidates appearing for Scale I have to go through 2 Phases in order to get shortlisted for Common Interview Round. First, candidates have to appear for IBPS RRB Prelims exam which is scheduled in September 2017. After the prelims conclude, a merit list is prepared by IBPS. The list will consist names of the shortlisted candidates. These candidates are then eligible to appear for Phase II which is IBPS RRB Mains. IBPS RRB Mains for Scale I is scheduled on November 05, 2017. Candidates qualifying the mains exam will then have to attend the common interview round. This round will be coordinated by Nodal Regional Rural Banks with the help of NABARD and IBPS.

  • Both the exams will be conducted in online mode
  • All the questions will be of objective type
  • Also, candidate will have an option to answer the questions in Hindi or English language.
  • Each question carries 1 mark.
  • There is a provision of negative marking as well. For each incorrect answer, 0.25 or ¼ mark will be deducted. Also, no marks will be deducted for any unanswered question.

IBPS RRB Exam Pattern Scale I

Exam Pattern for IBPS RRB Prelims (Scale I)

  • There will be a total of 2 sections namely Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude. Both sections will have 45 questions each.
  • The duration for IBPS Prelims is 45 minutes.

Exam Pattern for IBPS RRB Mains (Scale I)

  • There will be a total of 5 sections namely Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness, Hindi/ English Language and Computer Knowledge.
  • The duration for IBPS Mains is 2 hours (120 minutes).

Candidates qualifying the Mains exam will then have to attend IBPS RRB Common Interview round. The interview will be conducted under the supervision of IBPS and NABARD. In this round, a candidate’s personality and communication skills will be examined.

Note: For the post of Scale I, marks obtained only in the main examination will be considered for shortlisting for interview and final merit listing. 


IBPS RRB Exam Pattern –  Group A (Scale II)

Candidates applying for Scale II will have to appear for a single online examination. Then via the online exam, he/ she will be shortlisted to appear for Common Interview for final recruitment in various RRBs. The interview will be coordinated by Nodal RRBs with the help of NABARD and IBPS. Scale II has 2 posts to offer which are as follows:

  • Scale II – General Banking Officer
  • Scale II –  Specialist Cadre

The exam pattern for Scale II of IBPS RRB is different in terms of sections and timings. Mentioned below are the patterns for both the posts.

Exam Pattern for General Banking Officer

  • It will be conducted in online mode i.e. it will be a Computer Based Test (CBT)
  • The questions will be of objective type
  • The exam will have 5 sections namely Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, Finance Awareness, English/ Hindi Language and Computer Knowledge.
  • There is a provision of negative marking as well. For every incorrect answer, 0.25 marks or ¼ mark will be deducted.
  • The duration of exam is 2 hours (120 minutes)

Exam Pattern for Specialist Cadre

  • It will be conducted in online mode i.e. it will be a Computer Based Test (CBT)
  • The questions will be of objective type
  • The exam will have 6 sections namely Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, Finance Awareness, English/ Hindi Language, Computer Knowledge and Professional Knowledge.
  • There is a provision of negative marking as well. For every incorrect answer, 0.25 marks or ¼ mark will be deducted.
  • The duration of exam is 2 hours 30 minutes (150 minutes)

IBPS RRB Exam Pattern –  Group A (Scale III)

Candidates applying for Scale II will have to appear for single online examination. Candidates qualifying the mains exam will then have to attend the common interview round. The exam is scheduled for November 05, 2017. This round will be coordinated by Nodal Regional Rural Banks with the help of NABARD and IBPS. 

Listed below are the highlights common to IBPS RRB Exam Patterns for Scale III:

  • The will be conducted in online mode
  • All the questions will be of objective type
  • There will be a total of 5 sections namely Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, Finance Awareness, English/ Hindi Language, Computer Knowledge. All sections will have 40 questions each.
  • Also, a candidate will have an option to answer the questions in Hindi or English language.
  • Each question carries 1 mark.
  • There is a provision of negative marking as well. For each incorrect answer, 0.25 or ¼ mark will be deducted. Also, no marks will be deducted for any unanswered question.

Candidates qualifying the exam will then have to attend IBPS RRB Common Interview round. The interview will be conducted under the supervision of IBPS and NABARD. In this round, a candidate’s personality and communication skills will be examined.

Note: For the post of Officer Scale III, marks obtained only in the single level examination will be considered for shortlisting for interview and final merit listing.


IBPS RRB Exam Pattern –  Group B (Office Assistants)

Candidates appearing for the post of Office Assistant have to go through 2 Phases in order to get shortlisted for Common Interview Round. First, candidates have to appear for IBPS RRB Prelims exam which is scheduled in September 2017. After the prelims conclude, a merit list is prepared by IBPS. The list will consist names of the shortlisted candidates. These candidates are then eligible to appear for Phase II which is IBPS RRB Mains. IBPS RRB Mains for this post is scheduled on November 11, 2017. Candidates qualifying the mains exam will then have to attend the common interview round. This round will be coordinated by Nodal Regional Rural Banks with the help of NABARD and IBPS.

  • Both the exams will be conducted in online mode
  • All the questions will be of objective type
  • Also, candidate will have an option to answer the questions in Hindi or English language.
  • Each question carries 1 mark.
  • There is a provision of negative marking as well. For each incorrect answer, 0.25 or ¼ mark will be deducted. Also, no marks will be deducted for any unanswered question.
  • Candidates will be provisionally allotted on the basis of the marks obtained by them in the Main examination and the vacancies reported by the RRBs

IBPS RRB Exam Pattern Office Assistant

  • There will be a total of 2 sections namely Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude. Both sections will have 45 questions each.
  • The duration for IBPS Prelims is 45 minutes.

Candidates qualifying the Mains exam will then have to attend IBPS RRB Common Interview round. The interview will be conducted under the supervision of IBPS and NABARD. In this round, a candidate’s personality and communication skills will be examined.

Note:For the post of Office Assistants (multipurpose), marks obtained only in the main examination will be considered for final merit listing.


IBPS RRB Cut Off

The cut off for IBPS RRB varies as per a candidate’s Scale or post opted. Listed below is the explanation of cut off calculation for RRB exam:

For Officers Scale I - Each candidate is required to obtain a minimum score in each test of Online Main examination to get shortlisted for interview. Depending on the number of vacancies available, an adequate number of candidates in each category not exceeding three times of the declared vacancies in each state shall be called for common interview, subject to availability. Prior to the completion of the interview process, scores obtained in the online main examination is not shared with shortlisted candidates for interview.

For Officers Scale II and III - Each candidate is required to obtain a minimum score in each test of Online Single examination to get shortlisted for interview. Depending on the number of vacancies available, an adequate number of candidates in each category not exceeding three times of the declared vacancies are called for interview, subject to availability. Prior to the completion of the interview process, scores obtained in the online main examination is not be shared with candidates shortlisted for interview. Mere passing in individual tests may not be sufficient as candidates should also score sufficiently high on total in order of merit to be called for interviews/ provisional allotment.

For Office Assistants (Multipurpose) - Each candidate will be required to obtain a minimum score in each test of Online Main examination to get shortlisted for provisional allotment. Depending on the number of vacancies available in each state, candidates will be shortlisted for provisional allotment.

IBPS RRB CWE Score 

The corrected scores obtained by each of the candidates in different sessions (if held) will be normalized using equipercentile method. Scores up to two decimal points shall be taken for the purpose of calculation.
