CLAT Application Form 2018- How to Apply Online?

The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) Kochi will release CLAT Application Form 2018 in January 2018. The registration window will be of three months i.e. until March 2018. Before applying for CLAT 2018, candidates must be 10+2 graduate for LLB Program. For LLM Program, a degree in LL.B or equivalent is required to apply for the law entrance exam. Listed below are some key points about CLAT Application Form:

  • The online application form can be accessed from CLAT Official Website i.e.
  • CLAT Application Fee for General / OBC / SAP and other categories is INR 4000. Whereas, for SC/ST categories, the fee is INR 3500.
  • A maximum of three exam centers can be chosen by the candidate at the time of registration.
  • After successful CLAT Registration 2018, download CLAT Admit Card from April 2018. 
  • The conducting body is expected to schedule the law entrance examination on May 14, 2018. CheckCLAT Exam Pattern

CLAT Online Application Processing System (CAPS)

CAPS is an interface for candidates to make interaction with CLAT 2018 portal, provided at CLAT website. The processing system is facilitated by CLAT 2018 Committee to help candidates in knowing and doing the following things:

  • Register and apply for the law entrance exam,
  • To save the partially filled form and resume the whole process by logging in again,
  • To check CLAT Application Form status, admit card and result status,
  • To download CLAT Admit card,
  • To view CLAT Results, Rank and Scorecard,
  • Download CLAT Previous year Question Papers by paying a requisite fee of INR 400.
Note: It is advised that one should not submit the application until it is filled completely. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

CLAT 2018: Documents Required before filing Form 

There are few documents and information required before registering for CLAT and logging into CAPS. The list is as follows:

  • Personal details (Name, Date of Birth, Mobile No., Email ID, Parent’s Name, Parent’s Mobile No., and Address etc.)
  • Address for Communication with PIN Code
  • Educational Details (Percentage of Marks and Institute/ College Name)
  • Candidate’s Passport size photograph and signature in a specified format. CheckCLAT Photo and Signature Size and Format
  • Scanned copy of caste certificate (for SC/ ST/ SAP candidates) in PDF format only.
  • Scanned copy of Certificate of impairment for Specially Abled Persons (SAP) in PDF/ JPG/ JPEG format only (if applicable).
  • Program in which candidate wishes to appear (UG Course or PG Course) 
  • Three choices of CLAT examination cities. CheckCLAT Exam Centers
  • Certificates in support of Candidate’s claim for NRI/NRI sponsored candidate
  • Domicile Certificate in support of candidate's claim for consideration under State Quota
  • Scanned copy of Domicile Category in PDF format only (if applicable)

How to Register for CLAT 2018?

Every year there is a 4-5% increase in CLAT Registration for LLB Program. Whereas, for LLM Program there a substantial decrease of around 2% in registration. The following infographic explains the steps to fill the CLAT Form online:


Step 1: Registration at CAPS 

CAPS is the first step in the registration for the law entrance examination. Listed below are the steps to be followed to register for CLAT – 

1: Visit CLAT Official website and click on ‘Register Yourself’

2: Provide the following details in CLAT Online Form – 

  • Select the program type – are you appearing for LLB or LLM Program
  • Candidate’s Name – as it appears in the ID Proof. Candidate needs to produce the photo ID at the exam venue.
  • Father and Mother Name – as mentioned in the acceptable legal document.
  • Date of Birth – as mentioned in the acceptable legal document. 
  • a valid E-mail ID – enter the one that is used frequently as all the communications related to the exam will be sent to this e-mail address.
  • an active Mobile No. – provide your personal mobile number as most of the communications will be sent via SMS. 
  • a password – Upon successful registration, an E-mail containing CAPS User ID and Password will be sent to the registered E-mail and Mobile No.  
Note:Candidate’s Name, DOB, Father’s Name, Mother’s Name and Email ID, and Mobile number cannot be changed at any later stage. Therefore, a candidate should carefully enter their details and verify before submitting the same.

3: Enter captcha code and click on ‘Sumit’ button.

4: Click on ‘Registration Slip’ and download it.

5: Click on logout and again login with the credentials provided in the registration slip

Step 2: Fill CLAT Application Form

After receiving User ID and password, candidates can apply online by logging through these credentials.

  • Open CLAT website, click on apply online tab.
  • After that, click on “Already Registered” button.
  • Click on the tab ‘Application Form’.

Enter your Personal Details

After logging to the website enter the following details

  • Select your state/ UT of original residential/ Domicile
  • Select your category and as well as sub-category
  • Select special category (if required)
  • Select gender type and region
  • Now fill your complete address
  • Click on save and continue button

Enter your Educational Details

  • Select grading mechanism (Marking Scheme or other)
  • Select year of passing the 12th class
  • Enter Board Name
  • Enter maximum marks, mark obtained and percentage of mark
  • Now click on save and continue button
Note: Candidates are required to convert grade /CGPA (if any) into percentage.

NLUs Preference

  • Choose NLUs as per your preference
  • The same preferential choices will be considered during CLAT Counselling
  • Click on save and continue button

Upload your Documents

In this step, you have to upload your scanned copy of photo, signature and DOB certificate. Scanned copies of SC/ST and/or SAP certificates/ state domicile (in PDF format), Scribe Declaration form in case of SAP candidates are also to be uploaded, if applicable. And also enter the 3 cities for CLAT Exam Center. After uploading each file successfully click on save and continue button.


Upload Photograph 

As you click on here button given on the page then upload the photo by doing the following:

  • Click on browse button
  • select the location where you have saved your file
  • Then choose the file
  • If file is larger than crop it
  • And close the window

Upload Signature

  • Click on browse button
  • Select the location where you have saved your file
  • Then select the file
  • If file is larger than crop it
  • And close the window

Upload DOB Certificate

  • Click on browse button
  • Select the location where you have saved your file
  • Then select the file
  • If file is larger than crop it
  • And close the window

After completing the above section, you can now proceed to make the application fee payment. The details of the application fee are given below.

Step 3: Pay Application Fee

  • CLAT application fee can be paid via online (Debit/ Credit card/ net banking) or offline (e-challan) mode.
  • The fee varies for all the categories and the fee is non- refundable too.
  • For SC/ ST category the fee is INR 3500
  • For Unreserved/SAP/OBC/ any other category, the fee is INR 4000.

Detail of each process is given below:


Online Payment Mode

  • The fee can be paid using Debit/ Credit card/ net banking.
  • Charges may vary depending upon the payment option selected.
  • Candidates selecting card method for payment, have to fill in the card details (select card type, card number, expiry date, and CVV number)
  • Candidates opting for net banking, from the CAPS interface, you will be redirected to a bank you choose
  • Login with your Net Banking ID (user id and password)
  • Pay the application fee by clicking on pay now button
  • Once you confirm, you will be redirected back to the CAPS Interface

Offline Payment Mode (E-Challan):

  • Candidates opting for offline mode, have to pay the application fee through e-challan
  • The e-challan is generated in PDF format.
  • Visit any ICICI branch and pay the fee before March 28, 2018.
Note: No changes can be made in the application form after it is submitted and the bank challan is generated by the system. Candidate must ensure that the formalities for offline payment are completed before the due date.

Step 4: Download Filled Application Form

  • After CAPS acknowledges the successful payment of application fee, a confirmation email will be sent to the registered email id.
  • Download the completely filled application form or confirmations acknowledge slip in PDF format.
  • It can be downloaded by clicking on “Click here to take print out of confirmation page”.

There is category wise application fee for the CLAT Exam which is mentioned below:

Note: The candidates will have to bear the bank transaction charges for remitting the fee online/ offline.

Reasons for Rejection of CLAT Form:

Due to the following any one of the reason, your CLAT form will be rejected.

(i) An incomplete application form in any respect without uploading photo and signature

(ii) An incomplete application form in respect of without fee payment will be rejected

(iii) If face of candidate in the photograph or signature is unclear in the application, it may be rejected

How to recover CLAT Form Password?

If any candidate forgot his/ her password of CLAT login page, it can be retrieved by following some simple steps:

  • Open the CLAT 2018 website
  • Click on Apply Online link
  • Now click on already registered button
  • After that click on forgot password
  • Enter your registered email id
  • Enter the character as shown in the image
  • Click on get password button

After doing the all above steps, you will receive a mail containing your password. Use this password for logging to CLAT 2018 website.


SC/ST Certificate

Applicants who claim to be in any of the category SC/ST have to submit a valid document issued by competent authority, to qualify for the reduced fee.

Specially Abled Persons (SAP) Category

  • For SAP candidates with any category of disability (viz., blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, and/or cerebral palsy), benefit will be given to only those who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment with respect to a body part/system/extremity/whole body, etc.
  • Candidates should upload a recently obtained valid SAP certificate to avail the concession
  • SAP candidates appearing in the CLAT 2018 shall be entitled to an additional time of 40 minutes
  • SAP candidates are required to fill in declaration form from the Scribe and upload the same
  • SAP candidate, if needed, can take the assistance of a Scribe during the CLAT examination
  • Candidates having impairment and those who require a scribe to appear for the test must specify the same in the relevant column of the Online Application Form, citing suitable justification for the purpose and also by uploading the photocopies of the supporting documents (duly attested by a Gazetted Officer). The relevant documents must include;
  • A certificate of impairment from a competent authority
  • A statement indicating whether the scribe will be brought by candidate or needs to be arranged by the CLAT authorities
  • A declaration from the scribe (if brought by candidate) that the scribe complies with the preconditions and he/she will not in any way help the candidate answer any question in the paper, apart from his/her regular duty of reading out the questions and marking/clicking the correct answers.

CLAT 2018 Participating NLUs 

The following 18 National Law University (NLUs) conduct CLAT law entrance exam on rotation basis. This year CLAT 2017 exam will be conducted by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala. Candidates wishing to apply for CLAT will have to fill the NLUs list (while filling the application form) according to their preference by reading the brochure of each Law University, link is given below:
