Changes Introduced by CBSE in UGC NET 2017 Exam Pattern

CBSE has introduced some changes in UGC NET 2017 Exam Pattern in its latest official notification. It is essential to be thorough with UGC NET Exam Pattern so as to formulate a strategy for the national eligibility test. Listed below are some quick highlights of UGC NET Exam Pattern: 

  • UGC NET is scheduled for November 5, 2017 in offline mode. 
  • There will be a total of 3 papers that will be held on a single day. 
  • UGC NET is an objective type test i.e. Multiple Choice Type Questions. 
  • UGC NET Paper 1 and Paper 2 consists of 50 MCQs each.
  • Practice UGC NET Sample Papers to get the idea about the pattern and type of questions.
  • The duration to complete each Paper1 and Paper 2 of UGC NET is 75 minutes.
  • Paper 3 comprises 75 MCQs that are to be completed in a time frame of 150 minutes.  
  • For PwD candidates, 25 minutes and 50 minutes are given compensatory time for completing Paper 1, 2 and Paper 3.
  • Each question carries 2 marks. 

UGC NET is held for determining the eligibility for both Assistant Professors and Junior research fellowship. On behalf of UGC, CBSE conducts UGC NET in 100 subjects at 91 selected examination centers.

Highlights of UGC NET Exam Pattern 

There are 3 papers in CBSE UGC NET exam and each paper is conducted in a separate session on the same day. UGC NET exam is conducted for a total mark of 350 within a total time duration of 5 hours. All questions will be of objective type only. The candidates have to mark their responses in an OMR (Optical Mark Reader) sheet. The main highlights of UGC NET exam pattern are given below:

Candidates should obtain a minimum mark in each section so as to qualify the net exam. In paper-1 and paper-2, a minimum of 40% marks should be scored by a general candidate, while OBC (Non-creamy layer)/PWD/SC/ST candidate need to score a minimum of 35% marks. In the paper-3, a minimum of 50% marks should be scored by a general candidate, while OBC (Non-creamy layer)/PWD/SC/ST candidate need to score a minimum of 40% marks.

UGC NET 2017 Marking Scheme

The candidate needs to attempt the required number of questions in each section to qualify the exam. The details of marking scheme of each paper are given below-

UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 1

  • Paper-1 contains 60 questions among which it is mandatory for the candidate to attempt a minimum of 50 questions
  • A total of 100 marks will be awarded to the candidate if all of the answers which he/she writes is correct.
  • Duration of the exam will be 1 ¼ hours (from 9.30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. I.S.T.)
  • The paper is meant for checking the general awareness and teaching ability of the candidate.
  • So, the candidates can expect questions from reasoning ability, divergent thinking, comprehension as well as general awareness.
  • Each question carries 2 marks.
  • So, if a candidate answers 50 questions and all of them are correct then he/ she will get a total of 100 marks.
  • In case the candidate attempts more than 50 questions, then the first 50 questions will be evaluated.

UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 2

  • Paper-2 contains 50 questions and all are compulsory.
  • A total of 100 marks will be awarded to the candidate if all of the answers which he/she writes is correct.
  • Duration of the exam will be 1 ¼ hours (from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. I.S.T.)
  • In this section the candidate has to find answers to his/her subject related questions.
  • Each question carry 2 marks each.

UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 3

  • Paper-3 contains 75 questions and all are compulsory.
  • A total of 150 marks will be awarded to the candidate if all of the answers which he/she writes is correct.
  • Duration of the exam will be two and half hours (from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. I.S.T.).
  • This section also contains questions from the subject.


Paper-1 will contain questions including general awareness, reasoning ability, comprehension and it is mainly for checking the teaching capability of the candidate. Paper-2 and paper-3 cover all the subject topics including the electives.

The candidates are requested to give the subject code, they have studied in their post graduation as the main subject. If it is not available in the given subject codes, then they can give the subject which they have studied in graduation as the main subject. The subjects and their respective codes are given below.

Instructions for filling the CBSE UGC NET 2017 OMR Sheet

Test booklet will be provided to the candidates. It contains the questions in each section.

  • The answer sheet (O.M.R. sheet) can be seen inside the test booklet.
  • Test booklets will be sealed.
  • The candidates can break the seal only after the announcement of invigilator that it is the time to open the test booklet.
  • The serial number of the answer sheet should be verified with the serial number of the test booklet.
  • Both should be same.
  • In case of any variation, the test booklet should be returned to the invigilator.
  • Candidates can use either blue or black pen to mark the answers. Pencils are not allowed.
  • Candidates have to write their roll no., candidates name, fathers name, exam centre code, exam centre name and put his/her signature in the answer sheet.
  • 4 options will be provided to each question.
  • Mark the answer which you feel is the most appropriate one.
  • Candidates have to bubble the circle completely based on the answer option number.
  • Once answer is marked, you can’t delete it
  • If a candidate doesn’t want to mark the answer, then he or she can leave the bubble without darkening.
