# CAT 2018 Paper Analysis for QA- Section-wise Analysis

Updated On - February 19th 2018 by SOUMYA SEHGAL

CAT paper analysis for Quantitative Aptitude is the analysis of question papers of previous three consecutive years. The analysis is of only Quantitative Aptitude section which aims at testing the basic mathematical concepts of the candidate with the help of general mathematics.

Following analysis of CAT is a method to check the difficulty level of the question paper. The total number of questions have changed over the last three years in the Quant section but the topics from which questions are asked have largely remained the same. Topics are added and removed but the major topics like number system, algebra, arithmetic, sets are always there and sometimes in a major portion like it was in CAT 2013.

The topic wise contribution of questions and other important details like time for solving the QA Section and the difficulty level- all are given in detail under respective analysis columns as per the year mentioned in bolds.

CAT Paper analysis targets at giving all candidates an idea about the coming question paper by giving a glimpse of the question papers of previous years. By this students are able to prepare themselves for the exam they are to appear.

### Paper Analysis for QA for CAT 2015

CAT 2015 was held on November 29, 2015 conducted over two sessions from 9 to 12 and 2 to 5 , the same day.

A total of 100 questions were divided over 3 sections with 32-34 questions from each section. Candidates were required to attempt the whole paper in a duration of 180 minutes i.e. they could spend 60 minutes per section and not more than that.

Some of the important things about CAT 2015 are:

Date of the exam November 29, 2015 Total no of questions 100 Total no sections 3Reading comprehension (RC)Data interpretation (DI) and Logical reasoning (LR)Quantitative aptitude (QA) Total time given 180 minutes Questions from RC 34 Questions from DI and LR DI- 16 LR- 16 Questions from QA 34 Level of difficulty Easy

#### Section- III

Quantitative aptitude

A total of 34 questions were there from section 3 of QA which contributed one-third to the whole question paper.

This section mainly targets to test the basic mathematical concepts of the candidate. It had questions from the general and very usual topics of mathematics like Algebra, Geometry, Sets etc. One main thing about this section from CAT 2015 was that not even a single question was there from the most general topic of mathematics which is number system.

The structure of QA section was based by taking a total of 34 questions from the following topics with topic like sets and clocks contributing maximum of 1 question and topics like Arithmetic progression contributing maximum of 12 questions. Almost 15 questions were of TITA i.e. Type in the answer.

All the topics along with number of questions taken from each one of them which constituted the Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section of CAT 2015 is mentioned below:

Arithmetic (percentages, profit loss) 10-12 Geometry 6-8 Number Theory 4-6 Set Theory 1 Permutation Combination 1 Algebra 7-9 Logarithms 1 Sequence and series 1 Clocks 1

### Paper Analysis for QA for CAT 2014

CAT 2014 was conducted on two days slot November 16, 2014 and November 22, 2014

A total of 100 questions were divided over 2 sections with 50 questions per section. Candidates were required to attempt the whole paper in a duration of 170 minutes i.e. they could spend 85 minutes per section and not more than that.

Some of the important things about CAT 2014 are:

Date of the exam November 16, 2014 November 22, 2014 Total no of questions 100 Total no sections 2Verbal Ability (VA) & Logical Reasoning (LR)Quantitative aptitude (QA) and Data Interpretation (DI) Total time given 170 minutes Questions from VA and LR 50 Questions from QA and DI 50 Level of difficulty Easy to moderate

#### Section II

Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation:

The QA sub section of section 2 was relatively easy on the second day of the exam if compared to the first day the exam was held. All the sets contained same questions in this section. There were no shocks and surprises given by this section in CAT 2014.

QA section contained only a few probing questions and most of the questions could be handled easily and that is why this section appeared to be easier than other sections and previous years too. There was not a single problem in the paper where candidates would feel stuck.

A total of 34 questions were from QA section which included following topics:

• Number system
• Algebra
• Geometry
• Arithmetic
• Permutation and combination
• Probability

Overall, a uniform mixture of all the questions was in the question paper which could be attempted by the candidate easily. Anyone with basic knowledge of mathematics and general understanding had the ability to attempt the QA section.

### Paper Analysis for QA for CAT 2013

CAT 2013 was conducted on November 11, 2013

A total of 60 questions were divided over 2 sections with 30 questions per section. Candidates were required to attempt the whole paper in a duration of 140 minutes i.e. they could spend 70 minutes per section and not more than that.

Some of the important things about CAT 2013 are:

Date of the exam November 11, 2013 Total no of questions 60 Total no of sections 2Quantitative Aptitude and Data InterpretationVerbal ability, reading comprehension and logical reasoning Total time given Questions from QA and DI QA - 21 DI – 9 Questions from VA, RC and LR VA- 10-12 RC-9-10 LR-9-10

#### Section I

Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation:

In CAT 2013, section I was related to Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation unlike from the year 2014 and 2015.

A total of 30 questions were from section 1 of Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation with 21 questions from the sub section of QA and remaining 9 from DI.

The most surprising thing observed in this sub section of QA was that questions from geometry and algebra were in a dominating position. There were questions from other topics too but the above mentioned topics were all over the place. Following are the topics which contributed to the sub section of QA. Although their portion was very less due to the domination of questions from geometry and algebra, they contributed a little bit to the subsection and are mentioned below:

• Polynomials
• Functions and graphs
• Inequalities
• Trigonometry
• Coordinate geometry
• Arithmetic progression

Overall, there were some difficult as well as some easy questions. But all the questions were balancing the whole section making it relatively easy than previous years. Even compared with CAT 2015 and CAT 2014, QA was easier in CAT 2013 than above mentioned two years.

*The article might have information for the previous academic years, which will be updated soon subject to the notification issued by the University/College
