WBJEE Syllabus

WBJEE Exam Pattern is set by West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam Board (WBJEEB). The state level exam is conducted in 2 slots meaning Paper I i.e. Mathematics is conducted in the morning and Paper II i.e. Physics and Chemistry are conducted in afternoon. This article will help candidates understand important elements related to the test pattern of WBJEE viz. nature of questions, marking scheme, section-wise marks distribution, total number of questions, etc. For this year, the official dates for WBJEE will be released shortly at

Listed below are important facts relating to WBJEE Exam Pattern:

  • WBJEEB will conduct the exam in offline mode
  • WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam) will contain 200 questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combined.
  • The duration of the exam is 4 hours, where Physics and Chemistry Papers will be conducted together and Mathematics Paper will be conducted separately
  • WBJEE Syllabus has questions from class XII only
  • As for WBJEE marking scheme, one mark will be awarded for each correct answer option, while 0.25 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer. 

For the academic session 2017-18, WBJEE was conducted on April 23, 2017. The exam is conducted to grant admission to undergraduate programs in engineering and architecture in West Bengal. Last year, more than 1.5 Lac candidates appeared for WBJEE.

What are the changes made in WBJEE 2018?

  • As per the updates, WBJEE will not be conducted for medical stream programs
  • Candidates willing to take admissions in any of medical programs via WBJEE will now have to appear for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
  • Now, WBJEE will provide admissions to programs in engineering and architecture only.

WBJEE Marking Scheme

  • The marking scheme varies according to the category of questions division.
  • WBJEE Question Paper is based on 3 subjects and all the questions in each paper are divided into three categories.
  • WBJEE 2017 marking scheme for each subject is therefore properly segregated into 3 categories.

The 3 categories of questions asked in WBJEE are given below: 

Category 1 of WBJEE Paper Pattern

  • Questions in Category 1 carry 1 mark each
  • 1 mark will be awarded for each correct answer
  • 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer
  • Marking more than one answer option in the OMR sheet will be treated as incorrect answer, which means 0.25 mark will be deducted.

Category 2 of WBJEE Exam Pattern 2017

  • Questions in Category 2 carry 1 mark each
  • 2 marks will be awarded for each correct answer
  • 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer
  • Marking more than one answer option in the OMR sheet will be treated as incorrect answer, which means 0.25 mark will be deducted.

Category 3 of WBJEE Exam Pattern 2017

  • More than 2 answer choices can be correct.
  • Full 2 marks if all correct choices are selected.
  • There is no negative marking.
  • For partially correct response, without any incorrect marking, the following formulae will be applicable to awarding marks = 2 X (no of correct responses)/(total no of correct options)

WBJEE Mode Of Answering

The state level exam is an offline exam and the answers are to be marked on the given OMR sheet only. Candidates are supposed to learn about all the instructions about the mode of answering as given below:

  • Candidates can use only blue/black ball point pen on the OMR answer sheet.
  • Candidates must bring his/her own writing material.
  • The bubble in OMR sheet against correct option should be properly filled.
  • Candidates should mark the answer according to the mentioned instructions only.
  • It is important for all candidates to write the "Question Booklet No." at the mentioned places both on the OMR Answer Sheet and Attendance Sheet during WBJEE 2018 else the OMR Answer sheet of the concerned subject will be canceled.

WBJEE Syllabus

To score high marks and get a good rank, a candidate must have a knowledge of the topics that are most important for him/her to study and the others that require less attention and time. Some of those important topics of each subject every candidate must ponder over are mentioned below:

  1. Important topics in Mathematics: 3D and vectors, Quadratic Equations, Permutation and combination, Matrices, Binomial theorem, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry, Co-ordinate geometry of three dimensions, Complex numbers and Logarithms.
  2. Important topics in Physics: Kinematics, Laws of motion, Gravitation, Bulk properties of matter, Viscosity, Thermodynamics, Kinetic theory of gases, Oscillations & Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic effect of current, Electromagnetic waves, Atomic Physics, Nuclear Physics and Solid state Electronics.
  3. Important topics in Chemistry: Atoms, Molecules and Chemical Arithmetic, Atomic Structure, Radioactivity and Nuclear Chemistry, The Periodic Table and Chemical Families, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Coordination Compounds, Chemical Energetics and Chemical Dynamics, Physical Chemistry of Solutions, Redox Equilibria, Chemistry of Metals, Application Oriented chemistry, Aromatic Compounds and Haloalkanes and Haloarenes.
