NIFT 2017 Exam Pattern

NIFT Exam Pattern 2017- National Institute of Fashion Technology, conducting body of NIFT, has defined a test structure for the entrance exam. After having an idea about the pattern, it will help aspirants to not only plan their timeline accordingly but also know about from where they should start.The written Entrance Exam is scheduled on February 12, 2017. NIFT exam will be conducted in an offline mode i.e. pen- paper based test.

The NIFT 2017 Online registration is now concluded. Admit Card for NIFT 2017 are available on the official website for download. General Ability Test (GAT) and Creative Ability Test (CAT) are 2 exams through which candidates can participate in admission rounds in NIFT. NIFT 2017 follows a set pattern for the written examination. Based on the choice, all eligible candidates have to appear for entrance exam at the NIFT 2017 Examination Centers opted by the candidates.

NIFT 2017 Exam Schedule

NIFT 2017 Entrance Exam for all UG and PG courses is on February 12, 2017. Given below is the detailed schedule of NIFT 2017. Candidates should reach the Exam Center at least 30 minutes before the exam starts. Candidates will be prohibited to enter the NIFT Exam Hall if the exam commences.

Candidates who want to opt degree in B. Des (Bachelor of Design) and M.Des (Master of Design), have to take both CAT and GAT on February 12, 2017. For other courses, candidates have to appear only for GAT test.

On the basis of written test result of GAT and CAT, shortlisted candidates are called for the second test called NIFT Situation Test. Candidates are later called for Group Discussion/ Personal Interview (GD/PI) for final selection.


What is GAT?

GAT (General Aptitude Test), is conducted to test a candidate’s analytical and deductive skills. It focuses on testing the candidate's capacity for learning in general regardless of any specific skill in a certain subject or topic. GAT is held for the following courses:

  • Bachelor of Design (B.Des): Accessory Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Knitwear Design, Leather Design and Textile Design.
  • Master of Design (M.Des)
  • Bachelor of Technology (B.F.Tech.),
  • Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M),
  • Master of Design (M.Des.) and
  • Master of Fashion Technology (M.F.Tech.).

GAT 2017 Exam Pattern

General Ability Test (GAT) is taken for B.Des. (Bachelor of Design) and M.Des. (Master of Design) programmes. The exam of GAT will comprise of various sections as given below:

  1. Quantitative Ability 
  2. Communication Ability 
  3. English Comprehension 
  4. Analytical Ability 
  5. General Knowledge and Current Affairs.

Description of the sub-sections of GAT for B.F.Tech., M.F.M. and M.F.Tech.

  1. Quantitative Ability: This section of the test is designed to evaluate the quantitative ability of the candidates. The sub-test include questions on addition, multiplication, division, fractions, percentage, rate of interest, work and task, ratio and proportion and distance. This sub-test is designed to test the quantitative ability of the candidates. The test consists of questions on Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion, and Distance.
  2. Communication Ability and English Comprehension: This test aims at testing the language ability of the candidates in day to day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one-word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spellings, comprehend a situation from a given passage. This part is aimed at testing the language ability of the candidates in day to day communication in English. It focuses on questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one-word substitutes, idioms and phrases and correct spellings.
  3. Analytical Ability and Logical Ability: This area of test aims to judge the candidate’s ability to comprehend a situation from a given passage, and test the Basic English language. Several passages following questions about will judge the candidate’s ability to understand the meaning of the passage. This portion is designed to test the candidate’s capacity for inference and logic from the given information and to evaluate the candidate’s ability to identify the given problem and apply reasoning in solving the core issues of the problem. Concepts and practice of creative and lateral thinking are useful facts.
  4. General Knowledge and Current Affairs: This sub-test is designed to test the candidate’s capacity for ability of inference and logic from the given information. This area is given to test the candidate’s general knowledge and knowledge of current affairs.
  5. Case Study: The section is based on a situation of an industry environment. It helps to evaluate the candidate’s managerial ability. This section is prepared to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs.

General Information:

  • There will be no negative marking in the exam.
  • Mark the answer option number by darkening only the corresponding oval on the answer sheet using ball point pen (black/blue) only.
  • Calculator, Mobile, Electronic Device, etc., are not permitted inside the examination hall.
  • Appropriate civil/criminal proceedings will be instituted against the candidate taking or attempting to take this booklet or part of it outside the examination hall, besides cancellation of his/her candidature.
  • There are some questions from the engineering field as well, in M.F.Tech. Exam.

What is CAT?

CAT is an exam, designed to test a candidate’s skills in sketching, adeptness in use of colors and inventiveness. It also judges the intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development and design ability of the candidate. 


CAT 2017 Exam Pattern

Creative Ability Test (CAT) is conducted for the B.Des (Bachelor of Design) and M.Des (Master of Design) programmes in NIFT. An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative use of color and illustration skills.

Time Duration: 03 Hours (180 minutes)

Total Marks: 100 marks

Weightage: 50% for all programmes

Candidates will be judged on the following aspects:

  1. Intuitive ability
  2. Power of observation in concept development and
  3. Design ability of the candidate

The number of questions will vary course to course every year. The level of difficulty may vary. Selected candidates may then take the Situation Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

Note(s):

  • There is no negative marking either in GAT or CAT.
  • Use of water colors is prohibited.

NIFT 2017 Situation Test

Selected candidates from the written exam take the NIFT Situation Test. This exam judges a candidate’s skill to material handling and innovative ability as per the situation with limited set of material provision.

Time Duration: 03 Hours (180 minutes)

Total marks: 100 marks

Weightage: 20% for the exam

  • The model will be evaluated on space visualization, innovation and creative use of given material, composition of colors, finesse of the model, overall presentation etc.
  • These parameters will then be checked with the concept written behind the model which should be in English, any other language will not be considered.

The evaluation of the NIFT exam will be done by the Jury on the spot. The model presented by the candidate will not be saved for future reference.

Note(s):

  • No additional material will be provided during the test.
  • The use of any additional material is completely prohibited.
  • The candidates who try to disclose their personal identity by giving any personal details in the write up or leaving any signs will be disqualified and their candidature will be cancelled.

NIFT 2017 Group Discussion

The candidates who have applied for Masters degree from the written exam are required to take a case study based group discussion (GD) and a personal interview (PI). The weightage given to GDPI is 30%.

The group discussion will have candidates discussing over a case study for 15-20 minutes assigned to which a panel is judging them on the following:

  1. Conceptual Clarity
  2. Knowledge of the topic assigned
  3. Contribution made to the topic
  4. Interpersonal skills
  5. Ability to generate new ideas
  6. Problem-Solving Assessment
  7. Leadership Qualities
  8. Effective Communication

NIFT 2017 Personal Interview

The last level is the personal interview. A candidate who has passed the written as well as the group discussion, has to sit for personal interview. These candidates will then be judged by the panel assigned on the following measures:

  1. Career Orientation
  2. Aptness of the course
  3. Overall Personal Achievements in academics and co-curricular activities
  4. Communication
  5. General awareness and aptitude, creative and lateral thinking.

Candidates sitting for GDPI are not required to take any separate training.
