CEED 2018 Exam Pattern

CEED 2018 Exam Pattern will be set by IIT Bombay and the exam is tentatively scheduled to be held on the last week of January 2018.

  • The exam will be held in two parts: Parts A and Part B.
  • The duration of the exam will be of three hours out of which Part A and Part B will be of one hour and two hours respectively.
  • The test will be conducted only in the medium of English.
  • Candidates who will be able to qualify Part A are eligible to sit for Part B.
  • The negative marking is applicable only for Part A.
  • The question is both of MCQ and normal compulsory questions.

As per the name,CEED (Common Entrance Exam for Design) is a design related aptitude based test where candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their analytical ability. The analytical ability includes:

  • Drawing Proficiency
  • Communication aptitude
  • Rational Interpretation

There is no such definite syllabus mentioned by the exam authority.


CEED 2018 Exam Pattern Highlights Table

Like every year CEED 2018 exam will be conducted in two sections: Part A and Part B. Both the parts will be conducted on the same day. The aspirants who will successfully complete Part A will be the only eligible ones to appear for the Part B exam. The medium of language of CEED 2018 question paper will be only in English. CEED 2018 Exam Pattern in Detail

CEED exam pattern changes almost every year. However, there is no such notification of the same in this year. Thus, the question paper will be similar to that of the previous year. The question pattern will be totally different for both the papers. Part A will be concerned with the assessing the general awareness ability of aspirants whereas, Part B is all about the designing.

Part A

Part A comprise of a total of 100 marks and 3 sections. Part A will be Computer Based Test of time duration of 1 hour.

  • Section I: Section I contains 10 Numerical Answer Type Questions (NAT). In other words, here the answer will be a number which aspirant needs to enter using the virtual keyboard on the computer screen. No options are available for choosing of answers. Each question contains 3 marks i.e, total 30 marks. There will be no negative marking available for this section. Un-attempted answers are given zero mark.
  • Section II: This section contains total of 10 questions of Multiple Select types (MSQ). Each question will contain four options out of which there will two or more correct answers available. Candidates will be awarded 2 marks for every correct answer (total 20 marks). The rest of the marking pattern is same of the above section.
  • Section III: The last section comprise of 25 Multiple Choices based questions (MCQ). The questions here will have four answer options among which one will be the correct. Each correct answer will be allotted 2 marks and each wrong answer will be given -0.6 marks. No marks are given for un-attempted questions.

Part B

Part B comprise of 8 questions. Candidates can attempt any one of the Questions from questions 1,2,3,4 and 5. The last three questions 6, 7 and 8 are compulsory to attain. The total marks for Part B is 100.

The marking scheme of CEED 2018 will be unlike for both the parts.

There is no such definite marking scheme for Part B.


CEED 2018 Syllabus

CEED exam does not have such prescribed syllabus by the exam authority. As per the exam questions from the previous year’s papers it has been observed that Part A contains the following topics:

  • Visualization and Spatial Ability:  Pictorial or diagrammatic questions to assess the understanding of transformation or manipulation of 2D and 3D objects and their spatial relationships.
  • Environmental and social awareness: General awareness of environmental factors such as climate, population, water, vegetation, pollutions, weather, natural resources, etc., and their implications on the design of products, images, infrastructure and environment. Awareness of design terminologies, social and cultural connection with design, history of the designated artifact, socially responsible and environmentally sustainable design. History of art, sculpture and literature.
  • Analytical and logical reasoning: Ability to describe given information logically and select the most accurate solutions. Ability to weigh opinions, arguments or solutions against appropriate criteria. Ability to use logic and cultured. Ability to use logic and structured thinking to deduce from a short passage with a number of statements is the most absolute response to a posed question.
  • Language and creativity: Ability to understand passages in commonly used English Languages. Ability to think creatively in terms of alternatives, ability to distinguish innovative options and think out of the box.
  • Design thinking and problem solving: Ability to understand the context, the users and the constraints and choose the most accurate solution for a given design problem.
  • Observation and design sensitivity: Ability to detect concealed properties in day to day life and think critically about them.

Part B will cover the syllabus on the basis of the following topics:

  • Drawing: Ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective and shading.
  • Creativity: Ability to think out of the box and come up with unique as well as diverse solutions.
  • Communication skills: Ability to communicate concepts and idea clearly with the help of text and visuals.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills: Ability to understand the user and the context, knowledge of properties of materials and process and their appropriate use in design, originality of solutions, ability to create characters, plots, stories, etc.

Candidates are also advised to refer to the previous year’s question papers for references. The previous year’s questions papers will be available on the CEED website www.ceed.iitb.ac.in.


Important Instructions

The instructions given below must be strictly followed by candidates to undergo smooth examination procedure:

  • The total time duration of the examination will be 3 hours. The question paper contains two parts - Part A and Part B. Part A will be of one hour and Part B will be of two hours. Part B will start post end of Part A. Part A cannot be attained once Part B begins.
  • Both the questions of Part A and Part B will appear on the computer screen. Answers to Part A are to be attempted via computer. On the other hand, answers to Part B are to be given in the answer book.
  • Blank paper sheets will be given for rough work for Part A. However, it is mandatory to provide the rough sheets to the invigilator post the exam.
  • Charts, graph sheets, tables, calculators, cellular phones and other electronic gadgets are not permitted inside the examination hall.
  • In Part B, color pencils, crayons, sketch pens etc. can be used unless there are any specifications regarding the same in the question paper.
