CEED 2017 Paper Analysis & Answer key

Last Updated - March 14, 2017

CEED 2017 concluded on January 22, 2017 for the M. Des. aspirants wishing to join prestigious institutes like the IITs and IISc Bangalore. Followed by a good CEED score, candidates must clear an internal interview and studio test at the institute where they want to pursue their career. CEED 2017 Draft Answer Key for part A will be released on January 28, 2017 and the last date of sending comments on this is January 31, 217. Final Answer Key of CEED 2017 for part A will be released on February 2, 2017.

CEED is divided into two parts: Part A, which comprises of objective questions and Part B, which tests design skills, such as sketching, creativity, logic, and ability to come up with innovative solutions.

However, candidates need to note that even if they qualify CEED then also it doesn’t guarantee admission in MDes courses offered at the colleges that accept CEED ranks. After securing a good rank in CEED exam, aspirants need to separately apply for admissions at the respective colleges and thereafter fulfill their admission requirements.

The reaction of post-exam was mixed because some students were happy with the way they attempted the questions and were expecting to score well in the exam while others were totally disappointed with their performance. General consensus revealed that the difficulty level of CEED 2017 was high as it is one of the unpredictable exams.

CEED section A works as a preliminary screening and Section B is checked manually of only those candidates who qualify in objective type questions in Section A. Below, you will get section wise analysis along with some questions.

CEED 2017 – Part A Analysis

Part A, which was a computer-based test, contained 3 sections. This section was a little an aptitude-heavy and resembled questions of many of the MBA entrance tests. The reasoning questions ranged from Cube & dice to the next figure in the series. It even had verbal reasoning questions that may border on critical reasoning. Communication Skill questions largely were general English language questions.

Mostly, questions were asked from visual and spatial ability, environmental and social awareness, language, analytical and logical design, observation and design sensitivity. The questions asked were of both numerical answer and multiple choice type. But, the questions from colour theory, logos, fonts, etc. peppered it up.

Know About CEED Result

Especially for engineering students, questions based on visualization gave a tough time. As, the duration for Part A was 1 hour, so it increased the level of stress among them.

Whereas as expected, NAT was heavy on calculation, this year, for which the virtual calculator was provided on the top right-hand side. A feature which was not advertised in the instructions, but was visible to observant eyes & would have loved to use it, instead of relying on mental calculations.

Since there was no negative marking in the NAT, the candidates could take risk of relying on luck. The distribution of questions and marks was as below:

Type of questionNo. of questionsTotal MarksNegative Marking
NAT1030 marksNo marking
MCQs1020 marks0.6
 2550 marks0.6
Total45100 marks

CEED 2017 – Part B Analysis

CEED 2017 Part B comprised 50 marks compulsory questions followed by a single 50 marks optional question. Compulsory questions required the candidates to draw a large number of objects as observed in perspective, in relatively short time. In the compulsory question section, 30 marks were allocated to memory drawing, followed by 20 marks for idea generation question and final 10 marks for story writing. Optional 50 marks questions can be selected from 4 set of questions. In the optional 50 marks question, a candidate could choose a question out of 4 choices. These 4 choices were given from a specific branch of design, namely, product design, animation, visual communication and interaction design.

For 30 marks for idea generation question were like -  'draw the composition of a plate with 4 bananas' or 'Design an innovative mop for hose cleaning purpose', sketch a banana vendor being chased by a dog and kid on tricycle watching, etc.  are multiple and they may all may be right in their own terms.

5 uses of Bike Helmet

Another 20 marks question was where the candidates had to demonstrate 5 uses of a bike helmet.

Story Telling Questions

With the story telling question, the paper was concluded, which was of 10 marks. In this, candidates were required to write 2 stories of 3 lines with the word ‘Mango’, ‘Orphan’ and ‘Cycle Shop’. Many candidates found this question to be quite difficult, perhaps, because of the lengthy questions which followed this.

This year, CEED was more about testing the conceptual development and creativity of the students.

CEED 2017 Cutoff

It should be noted that the Part A of the paper will only be treated as the qualifying examination. Hence, Part B of only those candidates will be checked who will surpass the CEED 2017 Cutoff for Part A. Part B is more of a subjective paper. There is no cutoff for it but the performance of the candidates will be evaluated on the basis of various factors.

CategoryCutoff Percentage for Qualifying Part A
General10 %
OBC – NCL9 %
SC / ST / PwD5 %

CEED 2017 Overall Analysis

The overall level of difficulty in the examination was high. Questions were lengthy and branch specific. Part B had tough concept building and sketching questions. Most of them couldn’t solve the complete question paper due to lack of time. Since the virtual calculator was not mentioned in the brochure, many candidates missed it.

But, still CEED remains highly unpredictable exam. From the analysis, it will surely help the design aspirants to prepare themselves in a much-focused manner. Thus, summing it all up, CEED 2017 paper was quite interesting with time consuming, tricky and surprising questions.
