NIFT 2018 Exam Pattern

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a premier institute of national level for pursuing UG and PG courses in fashion technology. NIFT conducts a national level exam for admissions into different disciplines of fashion related UG and PG courses across various NIFTs in the country.

NIFT 2018 is scheduled for second week of February 2018. The exam would be conducted to enroll candidates in B.F.Tech, M.F.Tech, and M.F.M, B.des and M.des courses based on their performance in NIFT 2018 exam.

NIFT exam is conducted in offline mode and involves five stages. Candidates have to qualify each stage of the examination in order to be selected for admission in the course of his/her choice. The exam for B.F.Tech, M.F.Tech, and M.F.M, courses is 3 hours (180 Minutes) duration whereas for B.des and M.des course the exam is of 2 hours duration (120 Minutes).

The admissions and counselling would be done on the basis of merit list prepared after the announcement of exam results and cut-offs. The final decision in regards to seat allotments would be of NIFT 2018 conducting authority.


NIFT Exam Pattern 2018- Highlights

NIFT 2018 tests the candidate’s ability in areas like aptitude, knowledge in the field of fashion technology, creative ability, situation analysis etc. The exam is divided into four sections namely,

  • Creative ability Test (CAT)
  • General ability Test (GAT)
  • Situation Test
  • Group discussion/Personal Interview

CAT and GAT would be conducted in offline mode that is pen-paper mode. The questions are required to be answered in English language only. GAT exam would be conducted for B.Des and M.Des courses and would be of 120 minutes. For B.F.Tech, M.F.Tech, and M.F.MT GAT would be of 3 hours duration. Here we are providing details of the stages involved in NIFT exam. Candidates go through 4 stages to seek admission to their desired courses, details of each stage have been given below:

Creative Ability Test

The first step of NIFT 2018 exam will be to appear in Creative Ability Test. CAT, is conducted to test the candidate’s skill in sketching, inventiveness, and adeptness to use of colors. Apart, from this observation skills, concept development and design skills, and intuitive abilities are also tested through this exam.

General Ability Test

General Ability Test (GAT) is conducted to test applicant’s skill and knowledge in quantitative aptitude, communication ability, English Comprehension, analytical ability, GK, and Current Affairs. The test is of 100 marks and the time allotted is 120 minutes.

Situation Test     

Situation test is designed to evaluate and test candidates for material handling, and innovative ability as per given situation and material provided. Duration of test is 3 hours and a total of 100 marks are assigned to it. 

Interview/Group discussions

The Interview/GD rounds would be held to test aspirant’s ability to communicate and comprehend things. The test also checks candidate’s personality traits and abilities to convey his/her thoughts through expression.

Syllabus for NIFT 2018 exam

Quantitative Ability, they assess the quantitative ability of candidates. The major areas of testing in this section are Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion and Distance.

Communicative Ability section, the candidates are tested for their language skills and its use in the day-to-day communication in English. This sub-section includes questions from Synonyms, Antonyms, Words with corresponding meanings, Singular, Plural, One-word Substitutes, Idioms and Phrases, Spelling correction etc.

In English Comprehension section, a candidate is tested on their reading abilities and comprehending abilities of a given situation in the given unseen passage. This section tests the Basic English language skills through the questions based on the passage.

NIFT syllabus suggests that Analytical Ability sub-section is designed to test the candidate’s capacity for an ability of inference and logic from the given information. This section picks up questions from the areas of logical reasoning where candidates are supposed to draw logical conclusions from the analytical reasoning questions.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs sub-section, as per NIFT 2017 syllabus is designed to test the candidate’s general awareness and current affairs. The questions in this section are taken up from the current affairs sections and general knowledge.

GAT for B. F. Tech. MFM, M. Des. and M. F. Tech. has majorly same sub-sections like GAT for B. Des. and M. Des., however, there is a slight change. Sections involved in GAT are:

  1.  Quantitative Ability
  2. Communication Ability and English Comprehension
  3. Analytical and Logical Ability
  4. General Knowledge and Current Affairs
  5. Case Study

The common sub-sections have a similar syllabus as per NIFT 2018 syllabus discussed above, while the Case Study sub-section is a new addition to this GAT. The Case Study is a test which is based on a situation of an industry environment which the candidate has to analyze and provide solutions to the questions. This test is designed especially to test the managerial skills of the candidate.

In addition to the generic questions from the various sub-sections, the M. F. Tech. has some questions from the Engineering field also.
