M.Tech. Admission through GATE 2018, Getting the facts Right!

Last Updated - August 17, 2017

M.Tech. as we commonly call, is an abbreviation of Masters in Technology. Generally, it is a two-year long degree course, which includes a number of specializations that a student can choose from. While some students go for Civil Engineering, others choose between Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical etc.

The students often appear for the GATE in order to get placed in the postgraduate courses (M.Tech or MS by Research) across the country. GATE is jointly conducted by the IITs and IISC Bangalore on behalf of the National Coordination Board (GATE -MHRD).

GATE held once in a year, IIT Guwahati is the organizing institute for GATE 2018. The GATE exam lists out about 22 papers for which candidates can appear and pursue M.Tech or MS. They are seen to be really tough to clear. And hence, we lay out some of the reasons for you to go ahead with this course.

Why Choose M.Tech.?

We give you multiple reasons to choose M.Tech. Here they are:

  • It is obviously an extension of what you learn in your B.Tech. So, in order to enhance your undergraduate knowledge, you choose to do a master’s degree in the same.
  • It is a stepping stone to pursue research/ Ph.D.
  • Students pursuing M.Tech. are generally paid a decent stipend unlike the ones studying B.Tech.
  • The annual course fee for M.Tech. is comparatively lower than B.Tech.
  • Students securing good grades can look forward to gaining good placements. Most companies do prefer good and technologically sound people who are accustomed to deadlines and tight work schedules.

Why take the GATE 2018 Exam?

For all you wondering the benefits of the GATE exam, let us tell you that they are plenty in number. From the most-preferred government jobs to fancy MNC jobs, below are its plus points:

Myths vs Reality

Over the years, M.Tech. has been a topic of discussion for most of the people, in terms of the myths and facts associated with it. With this article, we wish to bust all the surrounding myths, getting the most apt facts in front of you! We also intent to differentiate between the fallacy and reality, helping you feel better about this fearful course. Take a read.

Myth- IIT’s do not offer M.Tech as good as B.Tech!

Fact- IIT’s do offer M.Tech. as good as B.Tech because:

  • The outsiders do not know, but M.Tech is taught by the same professors who teach B.Tech. Infact, some of the most adept professors teach only the Masters batches.
  • Now that India has the B.Tech cleared engineers in abundance, its next mission is to produce world-class Masters degree engineers. The focus of India post-independence was to produce engineers so that, India inculcates the same technological advancements as the other countries. The IIT’s have worked on these footsteps that helped India produce engineers in good number, plus, with the best skills.

Myth- Teaching is the only profession after M.Tech.!

Fact- In reality, this doesn’t hold any truth. In fact, teaching is probably the last option to consider. We see people getting placed in giants such as Amazon, Adobe, Oracle, Cisco, etc. where most of them are M.Techs than B.Techs. We also see many students pursue research after their M.Tech. However, teaching is a good option for those looking for stability in life.

Myth- M.Tech. is equal to a fun ride of 2 years!

Fact- This myth can be said to be partially true. M.Tech. is a mix of some serious study slots and some fun free time. IIT’s offer courses that are really good but extremely tough at the same time. Where scoring good grades is a task, the learning process comes easily. Then there are courses that are easy to do but useless in application. Scoring good grades may be an easy task, but they do not hold any value in real life.

All we can say is, after all this struggle in IIT’ s, the GATE exam will look like a cake-walk to you.

Myth- M.Tech. doesn’t give you good placements!

Fact- Passing your M.Tech. degree with a good score and from a recognized institute can assure you placement in a big company. Famous institutes have always held this record of placements for students who excel in their studies. In fact, these companies select you through rigorous selection criteria, along with the degree that you hold. Hence, students must strive to score well in the entrance exam, i.e. the GATE exam in order to enjoy the later benefits.

Scope after M.Tech

M.Tech. does require you to donate a sufficient amount of time if you aspire to score well. For all those apprehensive about its future benefits, here are a few of them:

  • Ph.D. is one option that students choose after completion of their M.Tech. They often travel abroad to famous universities and continue with their studies.
  • The Research and Development (R&D) department in big companies or Indian Ministries often hire students with Ph.D. degrees in hand. So, a good placement follows your degree.
  • Where small companies hire B.Techs. that agree for low packages, students who clear M.Tech. have higher chances of securing their dream job, along with an excellent package.
  • There are Opportunities to shift into managerial roles as one gains greater experience in the technical field.

Ph.D. after M.Tech

In case you wish to pursue Ph.D. after completion of your M.Tech course, we have some of the important details for you:

  • The University Grants Commission has introduced engineering sciences to Council of Scientific & Industrial Research)-NET (National Eligibility Test) subjects, to encourage Ph.D in India. They provide a number of monetary aid for such students.
  • All IITs, NITs and BITS have centralized admittance to their PhD programs. This means you can't simply apply to a professor and discuss about PhD positions, the institutes have a specified PhD admittance procedure involving evaluation of applications, written exams and interviews.
  • These institutes use centralized exam scores such as GATE score, CSIR-UGC NET score as one of the criteria to judge the academic credentials of an applicant at the first stage of selection procedure - evaluation of applications. In addition to this, minimum percentage cut offs at all academic levels also play an important role. Plus, your degrees need to be from recognized universities (whether private or not).
  • If you wish to pursue Ph.D. from an IIT, then you can choose between full time, part time or sponsored Ph.D.
