BARC Recruitment Through GATE 2017

BARC Recruitment through GATE –  Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the nation’s premier nuclear research facility based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, operating a number of research reactors across the country. BARC recruits graduate engineers every year for the post of Trainee Scientist Officer through GATE score.

There are 2 types of recruitment opportunities available for GATE 2017 Applicants in BARC - OCES (One year Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates) and DGFS ( Two Year DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates).

The Application form for the BARC recruitment through GATE 2017 will be available from January 23, 2017. Candidates are required to apply on the official recruitment portal of BARC.

No. of Vacancies

BARC has released the official notification for recruitment for the post of Trainee Scientific Officers through its academics programmes - Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES) and DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS) for Engieering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates.

On succesful completion of the respective programs, the Trainee Scientific Officers (TSOs) and DGFS Fellows will be recruited as Scientific Officers (Group A post of Government of India) and appointed at various DAE units or Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. The exact number of vacancies for the post will be announced later.

Job Profile

A Trainee Scientific Officer (TSO) who upon the completion of his/her training program secures a minimum of fifty percent aggregate marks is declared to have completed the training successfully and is subsequently posted in any one of the DAE units as Scientific Officers.

OCES is a one-year training programme for engineering graduates and science postgraduates.The training programme is conducted at the five BARC Training Schools situated in Mumbai, Kalpakkam, Indore and Hyderabad.

In DFGS programme, engineering graduates and physics postgraduates who are selected for the OCES program of the BARC Training Schools and who have also secured admission for M. Tech./ M. Chem. Engg in select Institutes and specializations are paid a stipend and a tuition fee to pursue their M. Tech./ M. Chem. Engg. degree while retaining their employment in DAE. It has a two-year duration

The job profile of a Scientific Officer mainly involves research and development pertaining to nuclear science and technology.

TSOs are provided with necessary facilities and opportunities to acquire knowledge and there by also enhance it and develop skills mainly with respect to research and development with regard to nuclear science and technology

OCES TSOs are paid a stipend of 35,000 INR p.m. during the period of their Training whereas DGFS Fellows are paid a stipend of 20,000 INR per month during their M.Tech. Both OCES TSOs and DGFS Fellows are paid a one-time book allowance of 10,000 INR. DGFS Fellows are reimbursed the tuition fee paid to their Institutes for pursuing the M. Tech./M.Chem.Engg.program.

An important point of note is that a revision of DGFS stipend to  35,000 INR- p.m. is under consideration.

Appointment in all the units shall be as a Scientific Officer (C) in the PAY BAND-III (15,600 INR-39,100 INR) with a Grade Pay of 5,400 INR. Appointment is made at the beginning of the pay scale with OCES TSOs getting two or three increments depending on their performance during the OCES program and the DGFS Fellows getting three or four increments depending on their performance in M.Tech./M.Chem.Engg. and four-month Orientation Course for DGFS Fellows (OCDF).

Total Monthly Emoluments (with three increments) at the time of joining including Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance at the present rate will be approximately 61,000 (upward pay revision is under consideration of the 7th Central Pay Commission). In addition, other Allowances such as Leave Travel Concession by air, every year up to first eight years (subject to conditions) and once in two years thereafter, Children’s Education Allowance and an annual Professional Update Allowance are also payable. A comprehensive Contributory Health Service Scheme for employees and dependent family members is also available.

DGFS Fellows whose performance is below a specified threshold will receive zero increments.

The academic eligibility in terms of the academic qualification is described below

  1. Candidates should have obtained a minimum of sixty percent in their qualifying degree.
  2. A valid GATE 2017 score as required by the organisation in the same engineering discipline as the qualifying degree discipline.
  3. Candidates whose final results are awaited are also eligible to apply. However, if such a candidate is selected, he/she must submit their mark-sheet of final result by 30th November 2017 in case of OCES and as per the notifications of the concerned institute in the case of DGFS.

The eligibility in terms of the upper age limit is explained below (with age as on 1st August 2017)

  • General category-26 years
  • OBC category-29 years
  • SC/ST category-31 years
  • Dependent of those who died in the riots of 1984-31 years
  • Physically challenged candidates, irrespective of their categories are eligible for an age relaxation of upto ten years
  • Persons domiciled in the Kashmir division of the state of Jammu & Kashmir from 1st January 1981 to 31st December 1990 – 31 years.

It is important to note that only Indian nationals are eligible to apply.

There is no reservation for OCES/DGFS in BARC for scientific officers. Selection is based strictly on merit irrespective of any caste/category.

However for the post of scientific assistant and technicians, there is reservation as per the government rules.

Application Fee

Candidates are required to remit the prescribed fee online through Debit/Credit card/Netbanking. Candidates belonging to reserved categories and Physically Challenged Candidates are not required to pay any Application fee.

Application Process

  1. After creating his/her account for registration, candidates must log in through the same fill in the form involving personal details, academic qualifications. A candidate must make sure that all the details entered by the candidate are true and crosscheck the information filled.
  2. While filling the form candidates are also required to upload their recent passport size photograph and a scanned copy of their signature.
  3. Candidates applying on the basis of their GATE 2017 scores must enter the same. For, those applying on the basis GATE 2017 score must fill in the same by 27th March 2017 after the declaration of the GATE results.
  4. Candidates must next pay the application fee of 500 INR. This fee is only to be paid by the General and OBC category candidates.
  5. The payment for the same can be made through net banking/debit card/credit card/bank challan through State Bank of India.
  6. After the payment has bee made, the candidate must wait for three for the payment to be verified. Once the payment is verified, candidates shall receive an e-mail from BARC itself.
  7. Once the candidate has received the mail, the candidate is required to complete the remaining form and submit the same.
  8. In case of non-receipt of the mail, the candidate can contact the helpdesk for the same.
  9. Candidates who fail to submit the complete form within the given frame of time, shall be disqualified.

It is important to note that the applications can only be applied online.

Given below is the list of documents required during the application process

  • Proof of date of birth
  • Qualifying degree certificate and mark sheet
  • GATE score card
  • Caste/Category certificate (for SC/ST/OBC candidates)
  • Discharge certificate in case of Ex-Servicemen candidates
  • Disability Certificate, indicating the type of disability (in case of PWD)
  • Scanned photograph
  • Scanned signature
  • One set of self-attested photocopies of all the documents listed
  • Any other documents/details regarding the eligibility criteria.

The instructions regarding the uploading of scanned photograph and signature has been given below:

For scanned photograph

  1. The photograph must be a recent colour passport size photograph (4.5x3.5cm) and the size of the image should not be more than 50kb. It should be in JPG format.
  2. In case the size of the image is more than 50kb, the setting of the scanner such as resolution, number of colours can be adjusted during the process of scanning.
  3. Also caps, hats and dark glasses are not allowed and religious headwear though permitted should not cover the face.

For scanned signature

  1. The candidate has to sign on a white paper with a black ink pen (2x4.5cm) and the size of the signature not more than 20kb. It should be in JPG format.


Selection Process

BARC conducts written test in online mode. It consists of 100 questions and candidate needs to solve the paper in two hours. Three marks will be rewarded for every correct response and one-third marks will be deducted for every incorrect response. Admit Card for BARC Recruitment through GATE 2017

The admit card will be available from March 1 – 7, 2017. Candidates can download the admit card from official site of BARC. They must have to carry printout of admit card along with following documents on the exam day.

  • An identity proof (adhar, voter card, driving license etc.)
  • Educational qualification certificate/ Marks sheet
  • Reserved category applicants required to produce caste certificate.

Selection Process

The candidates will be shortlisted on their basis of their performance in the GATE exam. Scores of the GATE exam for year 2017 is valid.

The final selection of candidates shortlisted will be done after the personal interviews have been conducted while the personal interviews will be conducted in either Mumbai or Hyderabad during May-June 2017.

The final list of candidates selected for OCES and DGFS will be displayed on the official site of GATE 2017. Selected candidates are required to report at BARC centers for completing joining formalities.
