JIPMER MBBS 2017 Eligibility Criteria

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is a residential medical autonomous institution in Pondicherry, India. After briefly being named as simply Medical College and then Dhanvantri Medical College, the institution was renamed to ‘Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research’ honoring the legacy of the nation’s first Prime Minister post his death in 1964.

This institute is supported financially by the Indian Central Government. Apart from imparting high quality education in Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical and paramedical courses, the focus of the institute is also on offering high order inexpensive medical care to the vast majority while continuing its strides in medical research with vigor and zeal.

JIPMER conducts a yearly entrance exam called JIPMER MBBS ENTRANCE EXAM for the candidates seeking admission into the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) programme.

The various eligibility criteria an aspirant must fulfill in order to be able to seek admission without any hassles are given below.


JIPMER ELIGIBILITY

Since JIPMER is an autonomous Institute of National Importance (by the Act of Parliament 2008), the admission to this institute is NOT DONE by the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET), which is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (C.B.S.E).

Instead, JIPMER has its own computer based entrance exam that will be held in approximately 75 cities.

  • The 1st criterion is that the candidate should have passed the 10 + 2 Board Exams (or the Class XII Board exams/ any other recognized higher or senior secondary exam or the Indian School Certificate Examination). The candidate must have passed the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio Technology individually and the aggregate marks of the above mentioned subjects should be minimum 50 %.
  • For candidates who have qualified in exams other than ones mentioned above, it is mandatory for them to submit an Eligibility Certificate. Such Certificates are issued by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi and candidates are required to submit this, especially those from the NRI/OCI category. 
  • The candidates belonging to the OCI category must also submit a certificate of registration as OCI.
  • If candidates from NRI/OCI category do not submit their application under Self Financing Scheme, they will be considered only against reservations under Unreserved Category.
  • The candidate should have been born before 1st January, 2001. The candidate cannot be under 17 years of age as on admission date (31st December, 2017) if he wishes to apply for the exam conducted by JIPMER.
  • There exists NO upper age limit.
  • There is also NO provision for age relaxation under any circumstances.

Nationality:

The candidate seeking admission into JIPMER should be an Indian Citizen.

Alternatively, the candidate must be a Non Resident Indian (NRI) or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).

Educational qualification

As already mentioned, it is absolutely necessary for the candidate to have passed in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology and English individually, with an aggregate of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology. The other mandatory subject is English with the level of the course as prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

For Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe

For the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) category and for the candidates belonging to the Other Backward Class/ Orthopedic Physically Challenged (OBC/OPH) category, the minimum aggregate marks of the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology taken together that is necessary to be eligible for admission into JIPMER is reduced to 40%.

For Orthopedic Physically Challenged

For the Orthopedic Physically Challenged (OPH) candidates who belong to the General Category (Unreserved category), the minimum aggregate marks of the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology taken together that is necessary to be eligible for admission into JIPMER is 45%.

Also, the candidates who are awaiting results declaration or who are appearing for their qualification exams in the month of March/April 2017 are also eligible to apply.

Note: The issue of hall tickets for JIPMER entrance exam for candidates who are awaiting results declaration or who are yet to appear for their exams does not mean the acceptance of their eligibility. Even if the candidate is issued an admit card for the entrance exam, the candidate will still be ineligible if the candidate fails to clear the cut off as mentioned above.

For the candidates belonging to the Orthopedic Physically Challenged (OPH) category, there are 3 seats reserved in JIPMER-P and 2 seats reserved in JIPMER-K.

For the candidates belonging to the Orthopedic Physically Challenged (OPH) category from Pondicherry, there is 1 seat reserved in JIPMER-P.

  1. What is the procedure for NRI/OCI students for eligibility if their qualification exams certificate is not issued by recognized authority from India?

For candidates who have qualified in exams not conducted by Indian recognized Boards, it is mandatory for them to submit an Eligibility Certificate. Such Certificates are issued by the Association of Indian Universities and is vital for candidates from the NRI/OCI category.
