UPSC 2017 Syllabus

The Union Public Service Commission is India's central autonomous agency authorized to conduct the Civil Services Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Medical Services Examination, Combined Defense Services Examination, National Defense Academy Examination, Naval Academy Examination, Indian Forest Service examination, Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination, Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Examination, and Central Armed Police Forces(Assistant Commandant) Examination. Candidates appearing for UPSC Exam have to be aware of the complete UPSC syllabus that will be included in all the UPSC examination so as to prepare well and get higher rankings.


UPSC Syllabus for Preliminary Examinations

UPSC Preliminary Examinations consist of two papers. Both of the papers are compulsory. Each paper comprises of 200 marks and duration of each paper will be of two hours. In exceptional cases of the blind, disability, and cerebral palsy candidates, they will get 20 minutes extra per hour in each paper.

UPSC Preliminary Examinations two papers are termed as General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II.

Both the question papers will be in two sets of language viz. English and Hindi and will consists of Multiple choice questions (objective type). In General Studies Paper-II, candidates have to qualify the exam with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.

Syllabus for General Studies Paper-I as notified by UPSC is given below:

  • Current affairs and Current events of National and International importance
  • General Science.
  • General issues on Climate Change, Environmental Ecology and Biodiversity (Doesn’t require to be subject specialized)
  • Indian National Movement and History of India
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution of India, Public Policy, Political System, Panchayati Raj, etc.
  • World and Indian Geography - Physical Geography of India and the World, Economic Geography of India and the World, Social Geography of India and the World, Right and Issues on Geography.
  • Social Development and Economic – Social Sector initiatives, Sustainable Development, Inclusion, Demographics, and Poverty, etc.

Syllabus for General Studies Paper-II as notified by UPSC is given below:

  • Problem-solving and Decision-making
  • General Mental Ability
  • Comprehension
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc.) of Class X level, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) of Class X level.
  • Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning
  • Interpersonal skills including Communication skills

UPSC Syllabus for Main Exam

Candidates’ rank in UPSC CSE only depends on Main Examinations and their Interview (Personality Test). UPSC Main Examinations consists of 1750 marks and Interview (Personality Test) consists of 275 marks. UPSC Main Examinations is conducted in 5 days.

The UPSC Civil Services Main Examination is a written examination. UPSC syllabus for the main examination contains nine papers, but only seven papers are considered for final ranking. In the remaining two papers, candidates have to secure minimum marks which are declared by UPSC every year.

Two qualifying papers will be of matriculation level or equivalent standard to its level.  These papers are not counted in the final score for ranking. Both papers are of 300 marks each.

Paper-A: Indian Languages

Candidates have to select any one of the Indian Language from the Languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule to the Indian Constitution (List of Languages is mentioned below).

Note: – These papers are not necessary for the candidates belonging to Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Paper-B: English language

List of seven papers along with UPSC syllabus and weightage of marks, these papers are counted for final merits:

The distributions of marks in the UPSC 2017 exam is given below:

Important Notes regarding UPSC 2017 syllabus

  • Paper-A & Paper-B which will be Indian languages and English Language paper respectively will be of matriculation level or equivalent standard to its level. Whatever marks candidates will obtain in this exam will not be counted for their final ranking.
  • Evaluation of the all the seven papers of all the candidates would be done simultaneously along with evaluation of candidates’ qualifying papers on ‘Indian Languages’ and ‘English language’ but the marks of those seven papers of only such candidates will be taken into cognisance who will attain 25% marks in Indian Language and 25% marks in English Language as minimum qualifying standards in these qualifying papers.

It is mandatory for a candidate to appear in both the Papers of UPSC Civil Services (Prelim) Examination for the purpose of evaluation. A candidate will be disqualified in case he/she did not appear in both the papers of UPSC Civil Services (Prelim) Examination.

UPSC 2017 Syllabus for Personality Test (Interview)

Only the qualified candidates from UPSC Main examination will be eligible for the Personality test(interview). Candidates will be interviewed by Board members, who will have before them a record of candidates’ career. The objective of this interview is to assess candidates’ personal suitability for their further career in public service. The technique of the interview will not be that of a strict cross-examination basis but of a natural though directed and purposive conversation with the intention to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate.

Here are few of the points that will be judged in the UPSC Personality Test:

  • This test will judge candidates’ mental calibre.
  • This interview test will reveal not only intellectual qualities but also social traits and interest in current affairs of the candidate.
  • Candidates will be asked questions on matters of general interest.
  • Some of the candidates’ qualities will be judged like intellectual and moral integrity, mental alertness, the ability for social cohesion and leadership, critical powers of assimilation, the balance of judgment, clear and logical exposition, variety and depth of interest.
  • Candidates’ personality test is not a test of either the specialized or general knowledge which has been already tested through their written papers.
  • Candidates are expected to have an insightful interest not only in their special subjects of academic study but also in the daily day to day events which are happening around them both within and outside their own state or country as well as in modern currents of thought and in new discoveries which should rouse the curiosity of well-educated youth.
