CSIR UGC NET Syllabus for Earth Sciences

CSIR UGC NET is a national level offline test held twice a year in June and December. The exam is a portal for candidates seeking admission to the post of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for eligibility of Lectureship.

Earth Sciences relate to the study of earth and its changing aspects. It deals with subjects like Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography, and Astronomy. There will be studies regarding climate, elevation, soil, vegetation, population, land use and industries.

If you choose CSIR NET Earth Science (Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences) as your career, then you must be passionate about:

  • The Earth that you see, you can’t see and how it goes over the longest division of geological time.
  • The environment, its changing nature, and reasons behind the changes.
  • Managing energy, mineral resources, and water.
  • Researches about mountains, deserts, oceans etc.

CSIR UGC NET will comprise 3 papers which consists of objective type multiple choice questions. While paper A is common to all subjects and comprises 20 questions on general aptitude; paper B and C consists of subject-related conventional MCQs wherein paper C will have analytical questions of higher value that may test the candidate’s knowledge and application of scientific concepts.


CSIR UGC NET Earth Science – Part A Syllabus

The questions in this section will evaluate the student’s general aptitude. Aspirants must possess knowledge of general science, quantitative reasoning and also analysis and research aptitude to be able to answer these questions. The syllabus for the Part A section has not been changed and is similar to the syllabus for the previous academic year of 2017-18. The highlights of CSIR UGC NET Syllabus for Part A as stated below-

  • Part A will be common to all 5 fields of studies of the exam.
  • A total of 20 objective type questions will be asked in this section out of which candidates must answer any 15.
  • The maximum marks an individual can score in this section are 30.
  • Every correct answer will be awarded +2 marks while 0.5 marks will be deducted for an inaccurate response.

CSIR UGC NET Earth Science – Part A Tips

Candidates must not be negligent towards this section as it is a scoring section. If they do well in this section, they will score better than their counterparts. A few preparation tips are mentioned below-

  • Aspirants must make it a habit to solve MCQ questions after studying a topic. This habit will help them in understanding the concepts behind each question which can help them to solve different types of questions.
  • They must aim to solve a certain number of questions within a specified time limit so as to improve their speed.
  • Data and graphical interpretation based questions are asked very frequently in the exam and so aspirants must study these topics thoroughly.
  • Students must aim to solve at least 11-13 questions accurately to secure a decent score in this section.

CSIR UGC NET Earth Science – Part B & C Syllabus

These sections are designed to assess the individual’s understanding of scientific concepts for topics given in the syllabus. Candidates will be required to answer conceptual as also application based questions. The nature of questions will be analytical wherein an applicant must apply scientific concepts to arrive at the solution to a given problem. The highlights of CSIR UGC NET for Part B and Part C are as stated below-

  • Part B and Part C will also consist of MCQs.
  • A total of 50 questions will be asked in Part B out of which it is mandatory for students to attempt 35. Each correct response will be awarded +2 marks while 0.5 marks will be deducted for an incorrect answer.
  • The maximum obtainable marks of Part B are 70.
  • In Part C, students have to answer any 25 questions out of the given 80 questions. Each accurate answer will carry +4 marks while -1.32 will be deducted for a wrong answer.
  • The maximum marks for Part C will be 100.
  • The first 35 questions (Part B) and 25 questions (Part C) will be evaluated only irrespective of the number of questions an aspirant attempt.

Each question will consist of 3 parts. Aspirants must answer all 3 parts correctly to get all the 4 marks.

CSIR UGC NET Earth Science – Part B & C Tips

These 2 sections have the maximum weightage and so aspirants must study well for it. A few preparation tips are given as follows-

  • Candidates must study and revise all topics regularly. They must solve questions based on the newly learnt concepts so that they understand its application better.
  • They must solve mock tests and previous years’ question papers as and when possible. This will enable students to understand the pattern of CSIR UGC NET Earth Sciences exam better as also acquaint them with the kind of questions asked.
  • Aspirants should only attempt those questions which they are confident about as only the first few questions will be evaluated

CSIR NET Earth Science Exam Pattern

The syllabus for the exam will be as laid out by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The level of CSIR UGC NET syllabus will be of graduation level.  

  • The exam paper for Earth Sciences will consist of 3 Parts- A, B and C.
  • The question paper will comprise objective type questions (MCQs).
  • The maximum marks for Part A are 30, Part B is 70 and for Part C it is 100.
  • The total obtainable marks in the test will be 200 and negative marking will also be applicable.
  • For Part A and Part B, there will be negative marking of 25% while for Part C it will be of 33%.
