SSC CGL Tier 1 Syllabus 2017

SSC CGL Syllabus and pattern is defined by the SSC (Staff Selection Commission). For the academic session 2017-18, SSC has scheduled SSC CGL 2017 Tier 1 exam from August 01 to August 20, 2017.  

SSC CGL or Staff Selection Commission - Combined Graduation Level is a national level exam, conducted to recruit candidates for various posts in Ministries and reputed departments of the Government of India. The exam consists 4 Phases namely Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4.

  • Tier 1 – It is also known as Preliminary exam. Candidates who have successfully registered for SSC CGL 2017 exam, have to appear for the first phase of CGL examination.
  • Tier 2 – It is also known as Mains exam. Candidates who qualify SSC CGL Tier 1 are then qualified to appear for CGL Tier-2 Exam.
  • Tier 3 - It is the descriptive paper. The shortlisting criteria for Tier 3 comprises marks which is obtained in Tier 1 and Tier 2. Those candidates who cross the mark of minimum qualifying marks in both Tiers and rank high in Merit List they will be called for Tier 3 Exam.
  • Tier 4 – Candidates who satisfy the minimum qualifying marks as defined by the SSC in all the three tiers will be called for Tier 4. This phase is limited to few government posts.

The following article gives detailed information regarding SSC CGL Tier 1 Syllabus. For Tier 1 syllabus is based on 4 areas of study as listed below:

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: In this section, questions are related to Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Quantitative Aptitude: This section consists of questions relating to Mathematics. The aim of the section is to check the arithmetic aptitude and computation capabilities of candidates. The level of this section is up to 10th Standard.
  • English Comprehension: In this section, most of the questions are asked from Reading Comprehension, Spellings, Spotting Errors, Synonyms, Antonyms, Grammar, etc.
  • General Awareness: There is no defined syllabus for this section. However, candidates can expect questions relating to History, Constitution, Politics, Current Affairs, General Science, etc.

SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam Pattern

In order to prepare for the examination, it is important for candidates to understand the exam pattern well. Here is the general overview of the SSC CGL 2017 Tier 1 examination:

  • SSC CGL 2017 Tier 1 Exam is a Computer Based Test.
  • The type of questions asked is Objective.
  • The exam consists of a total of 100 questions.
  • Each question carries 2 marks.
  • Total marks for the exam are 200.
  • Total time duration for the exam is 75 minutes.
  • There is negative marking in the exam. For each wrong answer, 0.50 marks will be deducted.
  • The exam will be divided into 4 sections, each section consisting of 25 questions:
  1. General Intelligence and Reasoning (25 Questions / 50 Marks)
  2. Quantitative Aptitude (25 Questions / 50 Marks)
  3. English Comprehension (25 Questions / 50 Marks)
  4. General Awareness (25 Questions / 50 Marks)

SSC CGL Tier 1 Subject-wise syllabus

SSC 2017 CGL Tier 1 exam consists of 4 different sections. Each of the section consists of 25 questions. Each section is of a total of 50 marks. Mentioned below is the section-wise syllabus for SSC CGL 2017 Tier 1 Exam:

This section includes questions from verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Non-verbal type of reasoning is the one where an image of an object is given in the form of a question.

Quantitative Aptitude requires candidates to be careful in terms of time management as some of the questions can be time consuming. Also, candidates are advised to sharpen their computation skills for achieving faster solutions to mathematical problems. With the right approach, this section can prove to be quite scoring for candidates.

In this section, candidates will be tested on their ability to understand and use correct English. The questions will be based on the following topics:

Candidates are advised to go through English newspapers, magazines, and books in order to improve their language and vocabulary skills. Reading on regular basis tends to improve the comprehension skills, vocabulary, sentence formation skills, and spellings of an individual.

  1. General Awareness

In the General Awareness section, candidates will be asked questions from multiple areas as discussed below.

Science: This includes topics such as:

  • General Science and its Application in Daily use
  • Physics, Chemistry and Biology up to 10th level

  • Abbreviations, etc.

It is advised that candidates keep themselves updated with the latest happenings in the world of business, economics, politics, world affairs, etc. A basic knowledge of history, constitution, culture, science, etc. will also help to score better in this section.
