SSC CGL 2016 Tier III: Prepare for Descriptive Paper

The SSC CGL tier 3 exam is scheduled to take place on January 15, 2017. CGL tier 3 is a pen paper based exam and is introduced by this year (2016). The candidates who have cleared the SSC CGL tier 2 exam will be eligible for tier 3 exam. The candidates must know that the SSC CGL exam pattern for tier 3 is not clearly defined. The candidate will be asked to write an essay/precis/letter /Application and it is conducted just to check the writing skills of the candidate.

The SSC CGL tier 3 exam can be written in Hindi or English language. The marking scheme is not defined for the SSC CGL tier 3 exam. The candidate will have to write the essay / passage of 250 words and letter/ application writing of approximately 150 words. The candidate has to score 33% marks in the SSC CGL tier 3 exam to appear for the tier 4 exam.


SSC CGL Exam Pattern

SSC CGL exam consists of 4 tiers. The first 2 tiers will be computer based test while tier 3 would be a written descriptive test and tier 4 would be a skill test. There will be 4 sections consisting of 25 questions each in tier 1. The time allotted for the exam is 75 minutes and the total marks allotted is 200 marks.

SSC CGL Tier III is a Descriptive Paper in English/Hindi consisting of Essay/ Precise/ Letter/ Application writing. The total marks allotted for the paper is 100. All candidates will be given 60 minutes to complete the paper. It is scheduled to take place on January 15, 2017.

Preparation Strategy

SSC CGL Tier 3 is a blessing to all those candidates who have special writing skill and is a matter of concern for those who are on the opposite track. Candidates may increase their writing skill by following the preparation strategy pen-downed below.

  • Read newspaper daily preferably “The Hindu” or “The Indian Express” for the editorial section. It will keep the candidate update with the current happenings in and around the world.
  • Work on grammar, it is very important for all the candidates to have a very good hold on grammar. A grammatically correct material shows the candidates proficiency over the language.
  • Write daily to improve your writing skill. In order to write a descriptive essay, it is important to know how to connect the whole idea into one paragraph and how to structure and relate all paragraphs into one complete article.
  • Work on handwriting, as SSC CGL Tier 3 is a written test it is very important to write neatly and presentably as it increases the probability of scoring more.
  • Lastly, it is very essential to know how to do time management. There are multiple tasks to complete in a limited time span and hence the skill of time management helps a lot in doing so. Strategies how to divide the time into each question and finish the paper within 60 minutes.

Essay Writing in SSC CGL Tier III

It is essential for the candidates to realize the complexity of essay writing, generally, students do not take essay writing seriously and make the mistake of writing lengthy and unstructured paragraphs, which does not prove to be very productive. Here are few points that every appearing candidate must keep in their mind while writing an essay.

  • Learn to divide the essay into three parts viz. Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.
  • Practice to relate each paragraph to make a complete sense and successfully deliver the main concept to the reader.
  • Use correct grammar and expressive vocabulary to leave a lasting impression on the assessor’s mind.
  • Try to write the essay in simple and connective language, so that the reader connects to the meaning of the essay easily.

Letter Writing in SSC CGL Tier III

It has been noticed that letter writing is a serious matter of concern as it has been widely observed that many employees in the department are not able to write a proper application or letter. Hence the commission has introduced letter writing in SSC CGL Tier 3 paper. Here are few tips to consider while writing a letter in the examination.

  • Letter writing is all about letter format. No matter how accurately you have written the body of a letter an incorrect format will yield you a negative output.
  • Practice the format of a letter very accurately.
  • Write a grammatically correct letter, because the body of the letter is small hence it gets easy to catch the error.
  • Practice to give all the necessary details in a limited number of words without converting it into a lengthy paragraph.

Precis Writing in SSC CGL Tier III

Precis writing is all about conveying the message of a big passage through a small paragraph. A long passage is provided on a certain topic and the candidates are required to precis it and write a small paragraph that is almost 1/3rd of the provided passage concluding the complete concept.

  • Candidates are suggested to read the passage very attentively and understand it properly.
  • After reading the passage prepare a rough note about all the important points and structure a small paragraph covering each of it.
  • Candidates need a good vocabulary to convey the message using limited and accurate words.
  • Read newspapers, magazines, novels, and books regularly to improve the vocabulary.
