Direction Sense in SSC CGL 2017 Logical Reasoning Tips and Tricks

  • Apart from practice, a logical thought process and exposure to different types of problems are two key factors that will decide how fast and precisely you can solve these problems.
  • Below mentioned are some of the tips and tricks which the candidates need to follow in order to score well in the tier 1 of SSC CGL exam:
  1. You must remember that the question given can only be solved with the data given. You do not make unnecessary assumptions or judgement while solving the problem. You must use smart and appropriate tricks and method to solve any problem.
  2. One topic should be taken at a given time, reasoning requires you to think in a certain way and doing 2-3 different types of topics in one go may not be fruitful.
  3. Be very careful with words which have negative prefixes like non-, un-. They can fool you for facts. So the question must be read very carefully and when you are sure about the question, then find the solution.
  4. If you are struck in a particular question and nothing is coming up; try eliminating options as per the information given to get the correct answers. Don’t try to answer all the question as it may lead to negative marking.
  5. Understanding of directions should be accurate i.e. which direction is West, North, East and South.
  6. Always Remember the sequencing of alphabets i.e. which alphabet comes after/before the particular alphabet and you should also remember their numerical position as per 1 to 26.
  7. Reasoning problems takes more time than other sections, hence time constraint must be kept in mind while attempting this section.
  8. If you have prepared well, this section can easily fetch you 40-45 marks in SSC CGL 2017 Exam which can prove to be essential to get shortlisted for the next round.

Direction Sense in SSC CGL 2017 Logical Reasoning Sample Questions

  • The direction sense test is nothing but a precise of sensing the direction.
  • To solve the direction sense test, one needs to first make a sketch of the data provided.
  • The direction sense consists of four different types of problems. Given below are the types of direction problems with solutions.

1. A man starting from his home walks 5 km towards East, and then he turns left and goes 4 km. At last he turns to his left and walks 5 km. Now Find the distance between the man and his home and also find at which direction he is facing?

Sol.

SSC CGL Preparation

From the above diagram we can find he is 4 km from his house and facing the West Direction.

2. A man starting from his home moves 4 km towards East, then he turns right and moves 3 km. Now what will be the minimum distance covered by him to come back to his home?

4. Prem started from his home and moved 5 km to reach the crossing point of the palace. In which direction was Prem going, if the road opposite to his direction goes to the hospital. The road to the right of Prem goes to the station. If the road which goes to station is just opposite to the road of the IT-Park, then in which direction is Prem which leads to the IT- Park?
Sol.

From the above diagram its shows that the road which goes towards the IT-Park is left of Prem.

That’s how Direction questions are solved easily. We hope these concepts have made the chapter easy for you all.

5. A child is looking for his father. He went 90 meters in the east before turning to his right. He went 20 meters before turning to is right again to look for his father at his uncle's place 30 meters from this point. His father was not there. From there, he went 100 meters to his north before meeting his father in a street. How far did the son meet his father from starting point?

A. 80 meter

B. 90 meter

C. 100 meter

D. 110 meter

Sol. Option C

Explanation:

Clearly, the child moves from A to B 90 meters eastwards up to B, then turns right and moves 20 meter up to C, then turns right and moves up to 30 meter up to D. Finally he turns right and moves up to 100 meter up to E.
So AB = 90 meter, BF = CD = 30 meter,
So, AF = AB - BF = 60 meter

Also DE = 100 meter, DF = BC = 20 meter
So, EF = DE - DF = 80 meter

as we can see in image that triangle AFE is a right angled triangle and we are having two sides, need to calculate third one, so we can apply Pythagoras theorem here

\begin{aligned}
A = AE = \sqrt{AF^2 + EF^2} \\
= \sqrt{(60)^2+(80)^2} \\
= \sqrt{3600+6400} \\
= \sqrt{10000} = 100
\end{aligned}
So from starting point his father was 100 meters away.

6. From his house, Lokesh went 15 kms to the North. Then he turned West and covered 10 kms. Then he turned South and covered 5 kms. Finally, turning to East, he covered 10 kms. In which direction is he from his house?

A. East

B. North

C. West

D. South

All the Best!
