SSC CHSL 2018 Exam Pattern

SSC CHSL exam is conducted every year to register eligible aspirants for vacant positions of Postal Assistants (PA), Sorting Assistants (SA), Data Entry Operators (DEO), Lower Division Clerks (LDC) and Court Clerks. Exam pattern given here of SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level (10+2) exam provides facts related to the marking scheme, number of sections, total marks etc.

  • There are three parts of SSC CHSL 2018. The papers are called Tier I, Tier II and Tier III in order.
  • Staff Selection Commission possesses the right to make any change in the scheme of examination such as mode of exam, marking scheme etc.
  • SSC CHSL 2018 can be taken either in online mode or pen paper mode.
  • SSC CHSL Tier I exam includes objective type questions from General Intelligence, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and, General Awareness.
  • There are 100 multiple choice questions in SSCH CHSL 2018 Tier I examination.
  • Each question carries two marks in Tier I. The total marks of Tier I exam are 200.
  • There is negative marking in both Tier I and Tier II of SSC CHSL 2018. The total marks of the contenders are calculated after subtracting the negative marks.
  • In Tier II of SSC CHSL 2018, candidates have to write an essay and a letter or application
  • Tier II is a descriptive type exam, can be taken only in offline mode.
  • Minimum qualifying marks of Tier II is 33% of the total marks.
  • Tier II of SSC CHSL must be written only in one language.
  • Candidate’s typing skills are tested in Tier III of SSC CHSL 2018.
  • There is also a skill test, applicable only for the post of Data Entry Operator.

Detailed SSC CSHL 2018 Exam Pattern

SSC CHSL 2018 has three exams named Tier I, Tier II and Tier II. All three follow different patterns. Let’s see the SSC CHSL exam pattern in detail:

For Tier I:

  • Tier I of SSC CHSL 2018 is an objective type examination.
  • Only multiple questions are there to be answered.
  • Each question is of 2 marks. There is negative marking in Tier I exam.

For Tier II:

SSC CHSL 2018 Tier II exam is a written descriptive type examination. Here are the points you should remember for Tier 2:

  • It is a pen paper based examination.
  • It examines the candidate’s writing and comprehensive skills.
  • SSC CHSL 2018 Tier II examination needs to be written in a single language solely.
  • Candidates can choose from Hindi or English as their preferred language.
  • Exam written partly in Hindi and partly in English are not accepted.
  • Each question carries 50 marks here. Only two questions are there in the question paper.
  • Candidates have to write an essay of 200-250 words and an application or letter of approximately 150-200 words.
  • Minimum marks of 33 are required to qualify SSC CHSL 2018 tier II examination.

For Tier III:

Tier III of SSC CHSL 2018 is an online exam which checks the candidates’ computer skills.It consists of a typing test. Main points regarding SSC CHSL 2018 Tier 3 listed below:

  • Tier III’s Typing test is valid for Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant, LDC and Court Clerk posts.
  • Typing test can be taken in one of the two languages: English or Hindi.
  • Aspirants, who pick English as the typing language, need to have typing speed of 35 words per minute.
  • While, applicants who are choosing Hindi typing should have typing speed of 30 words per minute.
  • Candidates are given 10 minutes to type a passage in either language.
  • All the assessments are made on the computer.

NOTE:

There is also a skill test for the position of Data Entry Operator. Candidates are required to have Data Entry Speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour on computer for the post. The duration of skill test is 15 minutes. The test is administered on computer.


SSC CHSL 2018 Marking Scheme

The three tests of SSC CHSL follow dissimilar marking schemes due to different nature of question paper. Let’s look into them one by one.

Tier I Marking Scheme:

  • There is negative marking in the objective type Tier I test of SSC CHSL 2018.
  • There are four options in every question, out of which only one is correct.
  • Students obtain 2 marks for every correct answer.
  • For marking an incorrect answer, 0.50 marks are deducted.

Tier II Marking Scheme:

  • SSC CHSL 2018 exam’s Tier II comprises of only two questions.
  • One is Essay writing and the other is Letter or Application writing.
  • Both questions carry 50 marks each.
  • As it is a written exam, no negative marking is possible.

Tier III Marking Scheme:

  • There is a typing test and a skill test (if applicable) in SSC CHSL 2018 Tier III.
  • No marking is there.
  • Candidates need to have the minimum typing speed mentioned.
  • Merit is decided on the basis of average of Tier I and Tier II marks.

SSC CHSL 2018 Syllabus

SSC CHSL Tier I Syllabus:

Tier I syllabus is prescribed by Staff Selection Commission (SSC). It includes four subjects- General Intelligence, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness.

SSC CHSL Tier III Syllabus: It is a typing test. No syllabus is there, candidates should improve their typing speed in the chosen language.


Books are essential only for SSC CHSL 2018 Tier I examination as Tier II is a writing test and Tier III is a typing skill test.

Important Instructions for SSC CHSL 2018

Here are some points to keep in mind while taking the examination.

  • Candidates are not permitted to bring mobile phones, calculators, pagers and any kind of electronic gadget in the examination hall.
  • Candidates are also not allowed to bring bags, helmets and other prohibited items to the examination room.
  • Candidates can appear only once for the Staff Selection Commission CHSL (Tier-I) 2018 Examination. 
  • Any aspirant, who appears more than once for the examination are disqualified from the said examination
  • Such students are also repudiated for three years from all examinations conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
  • Candidates are strictly warned to abstain from creating any impediment during the conduct of the SSC CHSL (Tier-I) 2018 Examination.
  • If any candidate is found hindering the conduct of the exam or creating disturbances at the examination venue, his/her contention is cancelled immediately.
  • Candidates should verify that they are seating according to the seating plan.
  • Be sure to take the Admission certificate with you, else entry will not be allowed to the venue.
  • Darken the bubbles on OMR sheet properly.
  • No stray marking or writing is permitted on the OMR sheet.
  • Handle your answer sheet with care. Do not fold, mutilate, tear or roll the answer sheet.
  • After the examination, hand the OMR sheet to the invigilator. Candidates are allowed to take the question booklet with them.
