IES Exam: Helpful resources and preparation tips to score better

Last Updated - November 03, 2016

IES (Indian Engineering Services) are the civil services that meet the technical functions of the Government of India. Government of India recruits its civil servants and officials on the basis of merit. These positions in the bureaucracy are filled through competitive exams. Large numbers of candidates apply for these exams, competing for limited posts. IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A combined three-stage competitive examination which comprises five tests, called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.

Know About IES

The recruitment of qualified candidates is made under the following categories:

  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering

The preliminary examination is scheduled on January 8, 2017 and the mains examination is on May 14, 2017. The last date for filling the application form is October 26, 2016.

ESE (IES) Exam is a gateway to a coveted career in government departments. Every year, around 1 lakh students (approx.) sit for the exam and only 0.5% of them qualify for the Prestigious Engineering Services Exam.

Thus, you can imagine how difficult it is to get selected in Central government departments through ESE. Also, number of vacancies in ESE is close to 600. Among 1 lakh students, this number is less than 0.7%. Looking at these figures, it becomes evident that, if your aim is to get into these departments, you will have to work really hard.
