Detailed Schedule for UPSC Mains Exam

In a recent notification by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission), the conducting body of CSE (Civil Services Examination) announced the dates for its Civil Services (Main) exam. The exam is scheduled to be conducted from December 3, 2016 to December 9, 2016. This exam is the second stage in the whole UPSC Civil Services Examination.

The UPSC CSE is a national level exam for recruiting the aspirants to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Revenue Service (IRS). The exam is popularly known by the name of IAS Exam, but is officially known by the name of UPSCCivil Services Exam. Civil Services is considered to be one of the most competitive and toughest exams to crack in India. The participation for the IAS Exam goes up to lakh and has a success rate of 0.1%-0.3%, one of the lowest in the world.

UPSC IAS Preliminary Exam

This is the first stage of the exam and the questions in this exam are totally objective type in nature. Also, this exam is held in two papers:

  • Paper – I (General Studies: duration – 2 hours; Marks – 200)
  • Paper – II (Civil Services Aptitude Test duration – 2 hours; Marks – 200)

IAS Mains Exam

This is the second stage in the Civil Services of the exam. This is one level which is quite lengthy as it consists of 9 papers. But, all the papers are conducted on different days. The types of questions asked in this level are Subjective and descriptive in nature. Listed below are the names of the nine papers:

  1. Essay
  2. English
  3. General Studies Paper I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society)
  4. General Studies Paper II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations)
  5. General Studies Paper III (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)
  6. General Studies Paper IV (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)
  7. Optional Subject Paper I
  8. Optional Subject Paper II
  9. Language Paper

Exam Pattern for UPSC Mains

For the candidates who have cleared the first level i.e. Preliminary Exam are the only eligible candidates who can sit for the Civil Services Main Exam. This will not only help you to clear the lengthy exam pattern of the IAS Exam but will also help you to systematically prepare a time table for the same. You should know that you should start preparing for the Civil Service exam as the UPSC Syllabus is vast.

Note: As the Civil Service Exam is led by UPSC, we inform you that the Exam pattern for the Mains have been revised. The changes that have been made are listed below:

  • Initially, the exam had 7 papers, but now 2 more papers have been added in the IAS Main exam.
  • The two additions will also consist of question that will be descriptive in nature. The two papers are: 1) any modern Indian language of 300 marks 2) English of 300 marks. The marks of these two papers will not be counted in the merit list of the main examination.
  • You are allowed to pick any one language from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution or English as the medium for writing the mains examination.
  • According to the new pattern there will be "FOUR" General Studies paper each comprising of 250 Marks with a total of 1000 Marks are made compulsory. The scope of the syllabus of General Studies papers are of degree level.
  • There is only "ONE" optional subject to choose from the list of subjects. It comprises of two papers each of 300 marks. So the optional paper has total 600 marks. You are allowed to take up literature as an optional subject "without the condition of having the same at graduation level.” The scope of the syllabus of optional paper is higher than the bachelor's degree but lower than the master's level.

Optional Subject - Paper II -250 Marks Candidate is allowed to take up literature as an optional subject "without the condition of having it at the graduation level."
Sub Total (Written test) 1750 Marks Marks of English and Language will not be counted in the total tally of marks for the written exam. So the total of the Mains exam will be 1750 Marks Only.

The total mark of the written examination will be 1750 Marks.

What comes next after UPSC Mains?

After you have given all the 9 Exams, the next thing in the pipeline is to clear the IAS Interview/ Personality Test. The marks obtained by the candidate from this level will be added to the Grand Total of the exam. Interview/ Personality Test will be of 275 Marks. You are required to prepare for it properly, as this will be the final stage on which your whole future will be based on.

Interview / Personality Test - 275 marks

You are allowed to give your preferred language in which you would like to be interviewed. It will be duty of the UPSC board to make the required arrangement for the translators.

After the second and third level that are Main Exam and the Interview/ Personality Exam, the Grand Total will be 2025.

You should know that you are allowed to use any one language from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution or English as the medium of writing the examination. If you plan on giving the IAS Exam you should make sure that you are willing to invest all your energy and efforts for the same. Civil Services Exam is a year long process and you need to give more than your 100 percent. We hope all your hard work pays off!
