NATIONAL LEVEL OFFLINE TEST

CDS 2017 Expected Cutoff

Last Updated - March 20, 2017

CDS (Combined Defense Services Examination) is conducted twice a year in February and November respectively. The CDS I 2017 written exam was conducted on February 05, 2017. So, those who appeared for the exam on February 05, must be waiting for the result.

For such candidates CDS 2017 Expected Cutoff marks will be very helpful as they can get an idea whether they are going to qualify it or not. So that they can start preparing for the CDS II exam, that is scheduled to be held on November 19, 2017. This article is about the expected and previous year’s cutoff of CDS Exam.

UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) conducts this national level exam for the selection of candidates into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. Selection procedure consists of two stages- written exam and SSB interview. Candidates who have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university and who are minimum of 20 and maximum of 24 years of age, can apply for CDS.

Candidates have to secure the minimum qualifying marks in written test to be eligible for the next round of the selection procedure, i.e. Personality cum Psychometric tests and Intelligence Interview held at the Services Selection Board (SSB).

CDS Exam Cutoff

The Cutoff for CDS Exam is of two types of qualifying marks- one is aggregate marks of the last qualified candidate in the written exam and the other one is final cutoff marks after the SSB interview of the last recommended candidate.

The written exam for IMA/INA/IFA consists of three sections- English, General Knowledge and Mathematics. Each section has 120 questions of 100 marks and of two hours’ duration. For OTA, written exam consists of only English and General Knowledge. So, the maximum marks allotted to the written examination for IMA/INA/AFA are 300 and for interviews (SSB) the maximum marks are 200. For OTA, maximum marks allotted to the written exam are 200.

So, UPSC fixes separate qualifying marks for both the stages of the exam. The final CDS Cutoff will be based on the marks of last recommended candidate’s marks in the written exam and interview.  Based on the marks obtained in the written examination and SSB interview, UPSC prepares a merit list of candidates for admission to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (IFA) and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA).

Sectional Cutoff in CDS Exam

It is also mandatory for the candidates to secure the minimum cutoff marks in each section of the exam. The minimum of 20% marks, i.e. 20 marks is required in each section in order to qualify the written exam of CDS.

CDS 2017 Factors affecting Cutoff

There are various factors that affect the Cutoff. The qualifying marks of the last candidate may be depended on these factors. We have listed some of these factors that affect the cutoff marks-

  • Difficulty Level of Exam: This is the most important factor that affects the cutoff. This year the exam was moderate on the level of difficulty, so the expected cutoff is almost same as it was in previous years.
  • No. of Seats Available: This factor is important, but it barely happens.  The no of seats, mostly remain unchanged. And whenever it changes it affects cutoff marks for both written and final.
  • No. of Candidates appearing for the examination: This number also affects the cutoff marks every year. The no. of appearing candidates keeps changing through the years, so it always affects the cutoff marks. The more the candidates appear, the cutoff marks are surely going to be high.
  • Previous Year’s Cutoff: Previous year’s cutoff, although, doesn’t affect the cutoff of the current year, but it is a considerable factor. This helps understanding the current year’s expected cutoff.
