CLAT 2017: How to Prepare for Legal Aptitude Section?

CLAT is Common Law Admission Test which is conducted to invite applications from candidates who seek admission to National Law University. Out of other sections, Legal Aptitude or Legal Awareness section is considered as the most important.

Legal Aptitude section comprises of 50 questions of 1 mark each. Candidates must note that there will be negative marking if he/she answers incorrectly. 0.25 marks will be deducted in such case.

This section focuses on examining the legal aptitude of the candidates. Candidates must be familiar with Indian Constitution, laws, legal terms, etc. For the convenience of the candidates, CLAT Sample Papers and Mock Tests have been given here.

As the name suggests, Legal Aptitude section will be focusing on the Legal propositions. Candidates will be given questions which have to be solved by exercising legal aptitude. Following is the syllabus that will be covered in CLAT Legal Aptitude section:

  • Indian Constitution
  • Indian Penal Code
  • Indian Contract Act
  • Family Law
  • Law of Torts
  • Legal fundamentals and terms
  • Legal Maxims
  • Important Landmarks, Supreme Court Judgments
  • Miscellaneous (Intellectual Property Rights, Labor Laws, Consumer laws, employment laws, environmental laws etc.)

CLAT Legal Aptitude constitutes 50 questions out of 120 questions asked in CLAT exam. There will be Multiple Choice Questions, candidates will mark one of the four options given, as the correct answer.

This is one of the most significant section out of all the sections in CLAT. A weightage of 25% is allotted to this section.

Candidate will be awarded with 1 mark for every correct answer. Negative marking of 0.25 marks will be done in case of wrong answers. The questions will be based on fundamental mathematics concepts.

For efficient preparation of this section, candidate must refer to some good study material. Given below are the books that are recommended to prepare for CLAT Legal Aptitude:

It is important to solve CLAT Sample Papers before going for the actual exam. This will help the candidate to know the kind of questions asked in the examination, also it helps them to know their strengths and limitations.

CLAT Legal Aptitude section is one of the most important sections of all. It can be inferred from the fact that in case of tie, candidate with higher score in Legal Aptitude section will be given preference. So considering the fact, candidates will have to prepare for it with full force. Here are some preparation tips which will be helpful in preparing well for this section:

  • Candidates must focus on strengthening their Legal reasoning skills, legal facts and General Knowledge.
  • Since candidates are expected to possess legal reasoning skills, they must apply Legal principles to solve the fact based questions with some logical skills.
  • Candidate must abstain from making assumptions while attempting such questions, answer must be picked as per the principles only.
  • Direct questions from legal strata are asked in the questions based on legal facts. Such questions can be answered by candidates with sound knowledge of landmark judgments and amendments.
  • Candidates must go through the newspaper daily to be updated with any new progress related to laws, judgments, etc.
  • Candidates must try to solve the sample papers/mock tests to get idea of time they take in solving each section and also to gain idea of the type of questions that can be asked.
