CLAT 2017: Errors in Question Paper

Last Updated - May 20, 2017

CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) 2017 yet again managed to probably get a whole bunch of questions wrong, with at least 13 allegedly confirmed errors, four questionable answers and 10 questions framed so badly that they would have been difficult or unfair to answer.

Errors in language can wreak havoc in a lawyer’s life

51,000 candidates took the 200-question exam with negative marks for wrong question, which is the basis for admission to the LLB and LLM degree courses in 18 NLUs (National Law Universities).

CLAT 2017 (Common Law Admission Test) concluded successfully on May 14, 2017. For the academic session 2017-18, CNLU Patna (Chanakya National Law University) was appointed as the conducting body for the online law entrance exam.

Type of errors in CLAT 2017

  • Typing error - None of the options are correct. This kind of error could have been avoided by a simple recheck.
  • Out of syllabus error - This is not within the syllabus till 10th standard. CLAT clearly mentions about the Mathematics syllabus as such.
  • Missing information - There is a typing error. This could have been avoided by simple re-check. One vital piece of information is missing.
  • Information error - It is nowhere mentioned who started the work. The above mentioned CLAT answer is based on the false assumption that all three (A. B and C) started working from the beginning which is not mentioned at all.
  • Grammar error - Option marked as solution is grammatically wrong.
  • Correct option missing - No option is correct, that is, the sentence has no errors to be identified.
  • Multiple answers mentioned - Two options (Option 3 as well as 4) can be marked as the right answer, which is against the direction mentioned.
  • Invalid choices - All options are wrong
  • Question with 2 answers - There can be more than one answer for the question.
  • Incorrect puzzle - The answer is wrong.
  • Lack of information & repetitive mistakes - None of the options are correct. Highly irresponsible mistake. Had the question been solved once after copying it, the error would have been easily identified. Question probably copied from here and copied the wrong answer too.
  • Question with 3 answers - There are three options correct.
  • Unclear Questions - The question has no clear answer. Extremely bad question.

CLAT 2017 Sectional Errors

English Section

Which contained 40 questions – was riddled with grammatical errors. The erroneous questions have been marked with ambiguous solutions.

There have been reports that the reading comprehension was also recycled from CAT 1999.  While the questions and given options are identical to the CAT test.

Logical Reasoning Section

With 50 questions, was also plagued with numerous errors. A question with three subparts did not contain sufficient information, and the given answers did not match with the estimate of students.

  • Several questions about family relations (4611392870, 4611392869, 4611392876), directions (4611392872) were inaccurately evaluated by the CLAT Committee.
  • In the Question 4611392898, CLAT Committee seems to accept that earth revolves around the sun in 366 days. Lastly, Question 4611392874 is claimed to have two potentially right answers.

GK Section

Not a single question from Static GK was asked. This, despite the syllabus of CLAT stating, “General knowledge will be tested on the general awareness including static general knowledge”. A lot of unnecessary hard work of focused and hard-working students went in vain because of this.

The committee expected students to know the precise number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India, and the exact decimal increment in India’s voting rights at the IMF. However, it appears to have not done its own research.

  • Question 4611392741 asks students about the sport in which the phrase ‘Scorpion kick’ is used. The answer key says the correct option is Kabaddi, whereas the term is also used in Kung Fu (the other option).

Math Section

Math was very difficult. This was not supposed to be an MBA entrance test.

  • A typing error in the Maths section left students confused. Question 4611392782 “……If ¾ of the women are married and 2/3 of the 2/3 of the married women have….?” had a repetition of 2/3. Any of the provided options could not be marked right.

Some of the GK questions are highly absurd. This will confuse those sitting for CLAT 2018 about what to prepare and what to leave out. Also, CLAT never announces a timeline. They have asked questions from 2015 as well.

Error with Best Action from CLAT 2017

Error 1

Question Id – 4611392782 (Mathematics)

In an office, 1/3 of the workers are Men, ½ of the men are married and 1/3 of the married men have “children. If ¾ of the women are married and 2/3 of the 2/3 of the married women have children, then the part of workers without children are:

a). 5/18

b). 11/18 (CLAT Answer)

c). 17/36

d). 4/9

Explanation of the error – The question has been probably copied from here.

This is a question from an aptitude test conducted by Infosys in engineering colleges. “2/3 of the” has been typed two times. Mathematically it means 4/9 instead of 2/3. Had it been 2/3, then CLAT answer would have been correct. If 4/9 is considered, 13/18 would be the answer. This confused a lot of students, who chose the nearest option 11/18 and got that correct. But there are many who invested their precious time and left it unanswered.

Best action for CLAT – Cancel the question or reward one mark to all. But the best action can be to reward only to those who devoted more than 15 seconds on this question. The time on each question can be tracked.

CLAT Answer – 4 ¾ days

Explanation of the error – It is nowhere mentioned who started the work. The above mentioned CLAT answer is based on the false assumption that all three (A. B and C) started working from the beginning which is not mentioned at all.

b). The other with a deficit of six, occur in Nature and contribute

c). The other with a deficit of six, occurs in Nature and contributes (CLAT Answer)

Explanation of the error – Two valence states of Uranium should be succeeded with a plural. In this case, it is occur and not occurs. The correct option is – the other with a deficit of six, occur in nature and contribute.

The hope to go through the book today I have almost read almost half of it.

1). B

2). C

3). D (CLAT Answer)

4). A

Explanation of the error – “The hope” is used grammatically wrongly in context of the sentence.  Probably instead of “I” it was typed “the”. Also, the solution mentioned is wrong. As per the directions, both options, that is, “The hope” and “almost read”, could be marked.

Best action for CLAT – Reward also those who marked option 1.
